Labour know full well the vast majority of their voters outside London voted leave and the MPs in the Midlands and Northern towns are Shi tting themselves.

Academic evidence and polling says the overwhelming majority of Labour voters voted remain. Even in Labour held leave voting seats, the evidence says that a majority of Labour voters voted remain. There is literally no evidence to suggest otherwise.

An overwhelming number of Labour members and Labour voters want Britian to remain in the EU. There is no appetite from leave voters or remain voters for Corbyn's Brexit in Name Only hogwash. It's time for the party to grow a spine and stand up for what its members and voters believe is the right thing to do, which is to put an end to this madness and campaign to remain in the EU.

Facts eh. I think we've had quite enough of that sort of thing.

I'm not sure Corbyn is mug enough to think that his Brexit has any real chance of being voted through either. In substance, the party has moved to that very position re. 2nd ref and inevitably campaigning for remain.

It'd be peachy if those MP's agitating to extend Article 50 got behind this position. As it stands, fair chance 2nd ref gets defeated as focus on extending this farce. If the option becomes hard exit or this, the vote in parliament can only go one way surely.

I've brought facts to a conjecture fight so no wonder I'm losing.

I know precisely dick all about the parliamentary dynamics of it all but from what I can see there has been a fundamental power shift in the labour leadership this week. Keir Starmer has finally pushed Corbyn into adopting the People's Vote aspect of conference policy after months of resistance.

I suspect the extension of article 50 will just be another door closing exercise. Once the deadline is extended, May loses all power in running the clock down to force MPs to vote for her deal. That leaves us in a position where we eventually need a general election to change the parliamentary arithmetic. The country then has a choice to vote for a May government backing her deal or a Corbyn led labour one offering a referendum on whatever deal gets agreed at parliament.

Corbyn has been on the back foot on this matter for some time so I expect the People's vote aspect of the policy will become more prevalent as time goes on. Its now clear that a second referendum will be the key component to any Labour Brexit policy.

Alternatively no deal gets passed and we leave without a deal on the 29th but i'd put money on that not happening.

Keir Starmer hasn't pushed bugger all.

Jeremy was in Brussels for talks with Barnier and Verhofstad just last week and now suddenly wants a referendum.

He's being pushed from above, not below.

Utter bollox. He's had several meetings with EU leaders over the past two years.

Starmer and Watson told Corbyn that a mass defection of up 100 MPs would happen if he didn't back a second referendum. Watson himself has been on the brink of leaving for some time.

Besides the Labour MP’s that have defected. There is one 2 patties within the Labour Party

One group led by the idiot Corbyn

The other group led by Tom Watson

If the Conservatives are divided, it’s certsinly not half as bad as the Labour Party

It amazes me that anyone in their right mind can vote for someone like Carolyn Harris

Both on a par with each other. Both have a misplaced sense of loyalty that like a sticking plaster is just about holding them together. The sooner we get rid of blind faith in a party and get a fairer voting system the better. This Brexit fiasco, if nothing else, has shown the need for change. The real talent is on the backbenches - the front benches are stuffed with incompetent clowns. It’s not difficult to work out why.

Starmer has been calling for a “people’s vote” since the day after the referendum. That’s nearly three years of him rocking in the corner in the foetal position chanting “people’s vote, people’s vote” at every meeting or conference. Corbyn ignored him the whole time. Then one meeting with Barnier and two days later he’s miraculously changed his mind.

It’s not a conspiracy when it’s being played out in front of our eyes in plain sight.

Could it not be more to do with the resignation of eight MPs and the threatened resignation of scores more that may have led Corbyn to be dragged kicking and screaming to a policy position that the vast majority of his party has supported for months?

There’s no need for conspiracies if you believe the evidence of your own eyes and ears and not the theories formed in your head.

Highjack, you're better than having to resort to outright lies.

Starmer didn't back a peoples vote until it became a facet of Labour Party Policy in September 2018.

Corbyn is deeply eurosceptic so much of the conflict has been in the wording of the conference motion which in itself was a compromise.

"If we cannot get a general election Labour must support all options remaining on the table, including campaigning for a public vote. If the Government is confident in negotiating a deal that working people, our economy and communities will benefit from they should not be afraid to put that deal to the public."

Corbyn and his team have been holding out against the peoples vote because they are against it and they've been using the ambiguous nature of the conference motion to kick the can down the road.

To me at least, it appears tha last weeks defections have emboldened the pro european wing of the PLP, i.e 3/4 of all Labour members to force the front bench to act and make good on the promise to back a people's vote.

If what you're saying is true it must just be a coincidence that Corbyn suddenly dropped his career long euroscepticism on the same week that 8 MPs left the party on a staunchly pro european platform.

They were all facing deselection anyway. I bet Momentum is devastated with losing Chuka Umunna. They’ll just be replaced at the next G.E.

That's not really relevant though is it. Not all of them would've even been triggered, let alone reselected. Plus there's no guarantee that more MPs wouldn't have followed with them.

It may be a veritable smorgasbord of coincidences, or perhaps Corbyn has just been visited by an angel at night and had an epiphany. But the blindingly obvious fact is he’s gone to Brussels to discuss brexit strategy and he’s returned with a different strategy to what he had before he went to Brussels. It is clearly a wild conspiracy theory to suggest that his visit to Brussels to explicitly discuss brexit strategy resulted in a change in brexit strategy though so it’s definitely a result of Keir Starmers genius and brilliance instead.

I wouldn't say getting the Labour Leader to reaffirm his commitment to party policy that was democratically chosen by conference was an act of genius or brilliance. It's not even a change of policy.

I’ll post this again for the benefit of the logically challenged.

Stephen Bush, political editor of The New Statesman which is pretty much the house magazine of the Labour Party -

What has really changed is that the electoral trade-offs from Labour's perspective have shifted, to one where the considerable electoral risks of moving to a second referendum position are outweighed by the consequences of not moving to a second referendum.

...with up to a hundred more, including the deputy leader, threatening to follow them if he didn’t back a second referendum, effectively destroying the party and any remote chance of power.

When their policy is “keep literally all options on the table” then it does allow for a bit of flexibility.
