A question for our Welsh Nationalists 19:51 - Nov 11 with 3992 viewsraynor94

Why did the leader of the Scottish Nationalists lay a wreath on behalf of Plaid Cymru? Was their a reason Adam Price couldn't attend?

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

I should imagine Price would have been at the ceremony at Llandaff Cathedral. Not sure why they couldn’t have sent somebody else mind?

Economies of scale innit. Maybe Holyrood would like to run Wales on behalf of the Assembly. Would probably do better!

I don’t doubt it, I only pointed it out cos the OP said that the SNP leader laid a wreath in London on behalf of Plaid. She couldn’t have, she was in Edinburgh. As Lohengrin said, I asssume Price was at the Cardiff equivalent.

Probably the leader of the SNP in Westminster whoever that is since old Angus and Alex got booted out by the voters.

I was watching the re-run tonight on the bbc, David dimbleby commentating. As the leaders of the parties in Westminster were laying wreaths, as the SNP man was, DD said laying on behalf of Scottish nationalists and Welsh nationalists. I thought it was odd too.

Google says ...

Angus Robertson, the Deputy Leader of the Scottish National Party, wrote “lest we forget” in Gaelic, English and Welsh on his wreath. It was also written in Welsh because he is at the event on behalf of Plaid Cymru. Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was not at the national service as she is attending the annual wreath laying and Remembrance Sunday service at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Poor show innit ?

Plaid and the SNP are only allowed to lay one wreath between them so they take it in turns. Liz Saville-Roberts was in attendance representing Plaid.

Why are they only allowed one wreath between them? That seems a bit stupid.

I don't know. I've been trying to find out but can't find a definitive answer anywhere. I always assumed it's because of time constraints and the fact that they work together in Parliament.

I didn’t realise that, but this could still be the answer. Presumably Plaid don’t meet the minimum MP threshold so have to team up with the SNP or would miss out entirely.

“1984 formula

In reply, Mr Whittingdale wrote: "The laying of wreaths by Parliamentary leaders is governed by a formula put in place in 1984 with the agreement of The Queen and the Speaker of the House of Commons following discussion with party leaders based on the number of Westminster parliamentary seats.

"This stipulates that only the leaders at Westminster of parties which had won and taken up six or more seats at the preceding general election should lay wreaths."

Under the formula, Plaid Cymru - which has three MPs - and the Green Party, which has a sole MP, are also excluded.”

Point of order Plaid have 4 Westminster seats.
