John Eustace new assistant manager on 13:45 - May 25 by Northernr | I know Steve Cotterill did it once but does it not show the gap between the top two divisions and the rest when somebody i willing to leave an actual managerial job, albeit Conference North, to come and be the assistant to Steve McClaren at QPR, 16th in the Championship? |
I dunno, jumping four levels to work with the best qualified coach (yes, caveats, but on paper) outside of the top division doesn't strike me as a move particularly lacking in personal ambition or one that's representative of a greater competitive distortion (not to say that it doesn't exist). Also I was interested in this style of football he's been praised for at Kidderminster - not the type of success you hear about too often coming from that level compared to the usual puffed-up spirit, organization etc. By the looks of it a stubbornly passing game (the sort we used to roll our eyes at Swansea for) but naive and often vulnerable. The fans seem to have become disenchanted with it. But that might also explain why he's been willing to trade seniority for greater experience with the type of football he believes in. It's not Cotterill studying under Wilkinson at any rate... http://www.harriers-online.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10658 http://www.harriers-online.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10647 "Been in touch with an assistant manager of a National North side who gave his opinion on the Harriers style. He said they are technically fantastic and their Plan A game was great but.....opposition can set traps and isolate particular players too easily, weak at set plays, they play the same way regardless of weather, pitches and opposition - great in theory but in reality need a plan a, b, c & d to win games. " "So I just had a quick look and we've conceded around 10 goals from 80+ minute when in a winning position to either end of drawing or losing a game. Resulting in us losing 15-17 points this season. Theres obviously an issue with the mental strength of the team at times but how best to counter this in the long run? I personally think the squad is good enough to win the league, I dont think the manager is half bad either. I feel we just lack real leaders and characters still to rally the young squad. We need just a little more experience in the team and we could walk this league (IMO)."

I think McClaren should take a bit of credit there. His experience in front of the camera really shows.

John Eustace new assistant manager on 08:56 - May 26 with 3255 views | ElHoop | There's a slight whiff of Malcolm Allison's appointment of Terry Venables as a coach at Palace about this. Hopefully it'll work out something like that anyway. I've got no idea what was wrong with the Holloway regime in practical terms and no idea whether this one will be any better, but you can but hope that it works out.

Am also keen for Birch to stay - think he could be very useful as a kind of bridge between the Ollie's regime and the new one... I guess the question mark would be if his loyalty to Ollie would undermin McLaren. Think his closeness to some of the players in that arm-round-the-shoulder at the end of games kind of way could be worth holding on to with this young squad - and being kept on would also give him a great chance to keep learning as a coach.
