For the disallowed goal it looks like their player got a touch as Scowen hit it. Hence that after touch makes it offside and I suspect that's what the linesmen and ref were debating.
never a penalty, if that was a pen could have given about 5 pens to us
Totally agree, never a penalty in a million years. Looks very much like the Cardiff player touched the ball (maybe as well as Scowen) for the disallowed goal so the offside decision was correct. Thanks Boston for the highlights.
For the expats, who that nasty Sky company doesn't allow to see its vids. Dunno what Cardiff were expecting, that slime green shirt doesn't do anyone a favour.
Not sure Scowen does touch that. Watched it several times and think the Cardiff player pokes it through.
Yes its hard to tell but ANY touch by Cardiff player (even if it then hits Scowen) then its offside.
You could tell (understandably) that they weren't sure so went with the % call which was no goal.
Unlike the Arsenal/Bournemouth incident where me and a lot of refs thought officials got it wrong and went with the goal, despite their being enough doubt to disallow it.
According to the comms, and maybe PinnerPaul could confirm, the rule's been changed so that even if Scowen does touch it it's still offside. The new rule is that it's the person who last intentionally plays the ball is the important one rather than the one who last touches it.
All this is presuming that Hoillett was offside anyway, which he looked to be on the box?
Correct Brian.
Obviously if Scowen PLAYS the ball - back to Smithies for example - then Cardiff player could be where he liked and he's not offside.
Here its not clear if a) Scowen even touches the ball and b) if he does, if its a deliberate touch so the correct % call id no goal.
As you say if ball deflects off Scowen, its offside if Hoilett offside when Cardiff last touched the ball.
He may have got the touch but it's definitely not clear. That's not a penalty for me either. What reason does Bidwell have for bringing him down? He just runs after the ball from what I can see.
Thoroughly enjoyed that particularly second half. Great to see us attack in numbers for a change and with pace. Not a bad Christmas all in all. I'm going to stick my neck out and say I don't think we're anything near a relegation side myself. Yeah when we're bad, we're bad but when we're good we're alright.
Please. Let's not rip this all up.

Many may be surprised to read this, but I thought pen very soft as well.
Thought so live and still think that after several viewings.
Good coverage on Channel 5 last night too. Colin Murray was at the match and interviews Smyth & Holloway afterwards. The young lad comes across well. Available on Channel 5 catchup TV and it's the first match featured on the programme.

I'd love to watch the Championship highlights on 5player but that piece of shit keeps moaning I have to turn the adblocker off. I turned it off for their site and even disabled it entirely but it just won't play ball
“The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.â€
The ref was abysmal - they're getting worse aren't they? Felt he really had it in for Smyth and gave him nothing at corners where Cardiv were trying to out niggle him.
However.... how many people did I have to explain to about the offside rule change in terms of "shagging" the ball where you run back into your half / an onside position?!?! The rule now is the free kick is taken from where you touch it and that can be your own half. So that kick being taken inside our half for offiside encroachment was perfectly correct. The shocking thing was -- even our bench did't or don't realise this as they were protesting with about 75% of our support.
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal
