Who Is Your Favourite Football Commentator Of All Time
Who Is Your Favourite Football Commentator Of All Time
Thursday, 29th Aug 2013 11:59

With reports suggesting that Mark Lawrenson has been given a 'reduced role' on Match of the Day as BBC shake up their flagship football programme, football fans have named their top ten favourite football commentators and pundits of all time.

Once again those people at confused.com have been doing their football research and following their statistics on the effect on drivers when they listen to football commentary, they reveal just who are the most popular football pundits of all time according to their research

1. John Motson (20%)

2. Gary Lineker (16.%)

3. Brian Moore (9%)

4. Chris Kamara (8.%)

5. Alan Green (8%)

6. Andy Gray (7%)

7. Jimmy Hill (6%)

8. Alan Shearer (6%)

9. Martin Tyler (6%)

10. Robbie Savage (5.%)

So do you agree or disagree with their findings, personally if they had a poll for the most annoying football commentator my vote would be for Andy Townsend who seems to find no irony in the fact that he is now the Worlds leading expert on the England team, despite the fact he preferred to declare himself a "Plastic Paddy" as those who opted for the Republic of Ireland's international side were dubbed back in the 1990's

Clive Tyldesley (not listed) is by far the most annoying. The amount off b***t that comes out of his mouth makes me feel sick. Reminds me of the kid at school that was rubbish at football but always had an opinion.

I quite like Jim Beglin (or is he classed a a co commentator ?), its just a shame he works for ITV.

There seems to be a mixture of commentators with pundits there. Back in the day I'd have say Motson, but I think he's lost it in recent years. I quite enjoy listen to Graeme Le Saux, although I'm thinking he'd be classed more as a co-commentator. Andy Townsend is without a doubt the worst and really flys the flagship for any dire coverage provided by ITV.

I not surprised he's been given a "reduced role" his lack of knowledge of the rules beggars belief: "That's 'dangerous play' - definitely a penalty..." and "that's not a foul he didn't 'intentionally' trip him.." are just two I remember. But he's not the only one, I think they should pass an exam or something, and MOTD should always have a referee on the panel instead of washed up players with outrageous accents whose only purpose is to provide work for impersonators...

And no 'Arry either. Or Mark Lawrenson. I'd happily have Alan Hansen, Alan Shearer and a guest referee each week.

If your asking for the best commentator of all time, and there is no mention in the top ten of Kenneth Wolstenhome or David Coleman, then the format is flawed. Obviously those voting are post mid 70`s football supporters. In which case, you can`t call it "the best of all time". I could carry on but I`d better get back to work.

Brian Moore (oh look at this, Bobby Stokes, hit well, oh and it's there! Stokes has put Southampton in the lead, a great break for Southampton, and they're all off that Southampton bench there, bobby stokes, only 5' 7" of him . . .)

Actually there isn't a single TV commentator who can hold a candle to the greats of radio Bryon Butler and Peter Jones. They could make a bad game bearable and a good game unbearable.

From more recent times, I quite like listening to commentary from Jon Champion, although it's a shame he went over to ITV from the beeb a few years ago. I think he's on ESPN now.

Barry Davies was best showing genuine passion and the lack of the John Motsons need to smoother the the commentaries with statistics, despite the admiration Davies gave the Leeds side when commentating over the 7-0 thrashing in the early 1970's. Best pieces of commentary have to be from Ken Wolstenholme describing the last Brazilian goal in the 1970 World Cup Final and the Geoff Hurst 1966 goal.

My favourite would probably be John Motson I had a nice long chat to him once after a game at the Dell and he was very complimentary about the club.

he worst is easy (although there are a lot to chose from - Lawrenson & Keane for starters) but the accolade for the absolute worst and whose knackers I'd personally like to see nailed to a plank is Robbie Savage. Average at best as a player (and he admits to cheating) but completely full of himself now he's a pundit and talks complete and utter crap.

Pah .... just beaten to it ..... Nothing can match David Coleman's ........ Channon ... ONE NIL..

It's as if Micky must have scored the 1st goal in every game i watched with DC commentating!!

Very surprised Dave Merrington on Solent has won any plaudits ;-) Love it when he goes into Whispering Bob Harris Mode, as if he doesn't want anyone around him to hear what he is saying, even though he's saying it to tousands of listeners!! DC Divverun Klass

How can Gary Lineker be on the list? He's never commentated a whole game. He should be on a football show presenter list as that's what he is. confused.com indeed (bunch of idiots themselves).
