Portsmouth Reflection

Did not think much wrong with the line up to be honest, 1st half was pretty even. It was an attritional game and the ref let a lot go. But ultimately there were a number of 4 / 10 performances down the spine of the team (Nardi, Cook, Varane, Frey) who struggled with the speed of their press and or the ping pong nature of the long balls

I watched the City game, he is better than Celar. I would be looking to shift Celar on and keep.

Funny how we really struggle in physical direct dirty games, and the players you expect to do the best in this type of battle tend to come out worse. Really poor performances from Varane, Cook and Frey, down the spine. Nardi's kicking the worst it's been this season as well. Missed the first goal due to a technical problem 2nd one 100% down to Cook though I thought Paal could have done better. Only real positives were Yang who made a real difference and Lloyd.

Should also add that different officials would have led to a different game. There were some terrible fouls let go from the early minutes. Saito being fore armed is yellow in most games

QPR v Derby match thread

2nd home game in a while that was really enjoyable, to be fair we were all over the place for the first 20 but Chairs worldy settled us down and it was a rout for the next 40 minutes either side of half time. Subs killed it a bit, Shame Kolli is injured as he would have perfect for the 2nd half. Madsen did absolutely fine in the round, I wish he had a shot instead of trying to put Saito in, but his confidence is shot. he was probably one of the better of the subs, Morgan a bit off it as he has been the last couple of games. Smyth and Lloyd had no impact Morrison had a bit of a mare of 10 minutes and needs some game time. Yang got hooked just as he was hitting flow. (Nice to see the Korean version of the bow to the crowd and the team)

Chair clearly MOTM, but Saito and Ronnie "Beckenbaur" Edwards brought the valentines heart flutters. Varane had a great game, and Field was having an excellent 2nd half.

Saito = Joy - Please confirm permanent Nourry, he just makes me happy !

Looking evermore sensible that contract renewal. He's playing very well and causing City a lot of problems. Looks more potent than Celar could be back in our squad next year

Chair finally in the middle long term?

Id say it changes as they move up the pitch, one of the stats sites called it 4-1-4-1, others call it 4-2-3-1 when defending deep its 4-5-1 they all 4-3-3 variants to be fair and we are very fluid. Chair was starting deeper than he would have done playing that role under other managers or even at the start of the season. Pushing furthest forward for the press when the keeper has the ball,

Subs last night....
at 18:02 5 Feb 2025

As I said before the goal, I felt we were struggling to get out, keep the ball and create. With the ball coming back off Lloyd to Blackburn every time. I would have brought Kolli on at 9 and moved Lloyd to the left and taken Saito off at that moment. I'm just saying what my opinion was at the time

Subs last night....

I thought the Lloyd sub was the wrong one myself and I dont agree Kolli is best suited as a 10 or wide either. Nothing stuck with Alfie last night to feet and their back line had pace. I said to the guy next to me no long before Colback scored that I would bring on Kolli and move Alfie wide as we were getting stuck in our own half, and Kolli would interplay better with Chair and the wingers and give us greater control and more goal threat

I dont think this is about money this is about having first dibs in the summer from the Spurs puppy farm. This is about having something in the bank with our relationship. Warburton explained this in an interview recently (might have been Hoopsa's) that sometimes you take a loan now at no cost to get the next one.

Big difference though between how he's been played at 10 before (almost in the hole or behind the 2nd striker) and how Marti played him last night, starting deeper in a midfield 3 and drifting to the left (Morgan going to the right). Previously when played at Traditional 10, he has struggled to affect the game as was easily man marked by the opposition 6.

Always felt he would end up in the centre midfield

His passing also, there was one first half where he came out with the ball down the left and planted a perfect 60 yard cross field ball on Smyth's chest. At times especially first half, he was acting as playmaker. Hence I was calling him Ronnie Beckenbauer alongside our Jimmy Cafu

Dunne off?

There may be accounting reasons, why they want the renewals in January rather than earlier.

However certainly for a player like Dunne, a Championship defender in the form of his life. This contract renewal or next contract will be the most lucrative of his career. If I was his agent that is what I would be saying to him. That could be a strong position as things stand now, but all it takes is an injury and his position would be severely weakened. I'm glad the club has (so far) held out for its position

Did not think we played to bad in the end, the Korean looks useful, thought we looked better after the subs. At the end of the day defence and keeper have cost us the game today.

Back to back losses but more worryingly is the goals against. Need to tighten up at the back again

I'd imagine it was Dunne's decision, they dont get to bid stage if the players reps have not indicated they might be interested.

gotta say but Nardi should be saving the first and tip the 2nd over the bar, though Fox asleep both times really poor footwork and balance

We look dangerous down the right and in danger down our left. I think Paal has done Ok but Field and Fox pretty poor IMHO. Lloyd gives us threat in behind but nothing is sticking to his feet

At the end of the day he will get more money, maybe a promotion under his belt and possibly some premiership games. He’s not going to turn it down. But let’s be honest 18 months ago he was a bit part player, 3 months ago we would have said 5th choice centre back. Like most of the team he had a poor start. He has been sensational in the last few months as he was in the last few months of last season.

It’s a huge shame but it is what it is, FFP means we can’t hand out big contracts Willy nillly and not all at the same time. It’s why we do them in Jan.

Cards on the table, live near the flight path. My understanding is that it won't be until the end of the parliament before they are able to actually put anything through so we are talking at least a decade before this happens. I get the view this is less about Heathrow and more about driving inward investment through optics by showing foreign investors they are ploughing ahead with changes to planning.

If they were being overtly political as the right would often be they shooting for Gatwick where are far more Tory / Lib Dem constituencies dont be surprised if they flip to that come the end of the parliament

I think it was a Mark Warburton interview which talked about how clubs will sometimes take a player on loan from a premiership club in order to get a signing in the next transfer window. I think this is about building relationships with Tottenham and giving us first dibs on potential future releases or rising stars in positions we might need to strengthen next year
