Jeez I must be a very old guy steeped in the ethics of the Corinthian Casuals but I was half expecting PNE to let us walk in an equaliser from the re-start. If I was a manager I would have instructed my team to do so. Justice was done in the end. Was one of the best games I've seen at Loftus Road in years. |

Will check that out- a bit of Rangers Archaeology. Love Auf Wiedersehen Pet too. Remember being glued to the first series as a 15 year old c. 1983. Also noticed today that the Beeb have the Boys From the Blackstuff series from 1982 up on iplayer. |

Indeed, truly the end of an era - been cutting through there from the tube station for decades - c. 1985? Or from whenever those places were built. I did feel sorry for the residents. One game last season, some muppet was urinating in a corner down there and one of the local women came out and gave him a well deserved ear bashing and told him to go and p**s against his own front door. Quite rightly sent him packing - not nice on any level but particularly when there's kids who play out there. |

Same. Been 8 times this season. Haven't seen us win since Leeds game in April. On the other hand, sitting in exactly the same seat as I did for that famous victory. So, I reckon we'll edge a very tight contest. 2-1 to the R's. |

Yes 3-0 defeat we were already down. Amazingly , think about 10,000 turned up. Only a couple of thousand remained for the 'lap of honour' and Holloway walked separately from the team. A bloke ran on the pitch to try to get at the players. As I was coming out of the Loft I saw him being ejected by stewards - he was pleading with them, ' I only wanted to let them know how I feel'. The current team/squad is much better. Crouch was excellent that season but still just a kid and once Langers and Carlisle were ruled out through injury it was a spineless, awful team. Although I remember a rare and scrappy evening victory at Gillingham. One of Gerry's last games in charge I think? February 2001? |

Yes, agree I was there - persuaded my wife to go too. A truly diabolical performance. In those days I was fond of telling my wife and anyone who would listen that we were only parked in the second flight momentarily and the inevitable rise to Premiership glory and probable European football was just around the corner. Tony Scully I believed would be a crucial ingredient in this process. This game was a real turning point in terms of expectations and 25 years later it hasn't shifted much. As the half time whistle blew, a fellow R standing nearby and obviously as disgusted as we all were by our limp and pathetic performance, shouted out to our lot trooping off the pitch, 'That was f***ing rubbish Rangers!', to which his partner/wife immediately turned to him to admonish his bad language with a 'Nigel!' and a how dare you stare. Was the best part of the day. And my car broke down on the way home. Bloody Montego. |

Great thread, agree modern 'elite' football is deadly dull. Off to see Slough Town v Welling in NLS tomorrow. Proper Football. Plenty of heart, passion, pace and usually brilliant entertainment. Rebels 7th in table (just inside play off zone) and currently 2nd top scorers in the division. I can't face going to the R's tomorrow, I just can't. I'm sure I'm not the only one in need of some respite from the torture. However, will be regularly popping into the downstairs bar checking the vidi-printer in the hope of a miracle... |

I wouldn't mind him scoring tomorrow. A tap in to win the game down the Loft End in the 93rd minute would do me absolutely fine! |

| Forum Reply | Malta at 12:18 28 Oct 2024
I've been to Malta a dozen times over the last 25 years, mainly on Scuba based holidays. I don't dive any more but still swim and snorkel, and Malta is absolutely superb for all of these activities due to the clear, blue, warm water. Even at the end of winter the sea temperature only drops to a low of 15/16 degrees. There aren't that many sandy beaches but there are lots of places to sunbathe or swim off the rocky shore. The long walking path between Sliema and St Julians' is particularly good for this and you will see people going into the sea here even in November if the sun is out. Lots of bars and restaurants along the promenade too and if you want a more lively scene (I'm way too old for it) try Paceville in St Julians. There's a good cinema there too - I memorably watched the Baz Luhrmann's 'Elvis' film there in 2022. Is quite old fashioned, in tone, they even have an interval! Valletta is world class city - full of incredible architecture, old churches/Cathedrals and you can see two Caravaggio paintings in St John's Co - Cathedral - he completed them when he was living in Malta in the early 1600s whilst on the run from a murder charge in Rome. It's a very Mediterranean/European feeling city, with excellent bars, cafes and restaurants everywhere. Republic Street is the main boulevard, with everything else radiating off from it - including a walk out to the Upper Barrakka Gardens where there are wonderful views of Grand Harbour. Valletta is a bit hilly so remember to bring your walking legs. (Lord Byron, who had a club foot departed the city in 1811 declaring, 'Adieu, ye cursed streets of stairs'). A great place to contemplate Byron's time in Malta and that of Samuel Taylor Coleridge who was also there working for the British Government a few years earlier, is '67 Kapitali', a brilliant craft ale bar which serves food too. I often like to wander around a little half cut, imagining I'm off to meet the great poets after a few sherbets in there! The baroque architecture, oriel windows, beautiful meandering streets which offer a glimpse of the Mediterranean Sea at their far ends is stunning. it's definitely a City I could live in. There are a number of museums - particularly dealing with the Ottoman siege of Malta in 1565 and the role played by the Knights of St John, but my favourite is the Lascaris War Rooms where the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943 was planned, also the scene of the famous Pedestal Convoy in 1942 which more or less saved Malta from Axis take-over. Take the incredibly futuristic lift from Upper Barrakka Gardens down to the ferries and take the fast catamaran service to Gozo - you will need at least a day for this. it's only 45 minutes on the fast ferry but there is so much to see and do there. Gozo also has excellent resorts and swimming spots - try Xlendi or Marsalforn Bay, and fabulous little towns with beautiful churches and town squares. Rabat, the capital of Gozo, has a citadel (in which the whole population once used to hide from the Ottoman raiders) and views around the whole island. you can get around Gozo easily by bus, Uber or taxi. Then, fast cat back to Valletta. There's so much more too but Valletta is always my starting and end point. The locals are friendly although can be reserved and socially conservative (especially the older generation). They love British (and Italian) football and my QPR top always gets noticed and commented on, although a lot of Maltese follow Liverpool, ManU and a throw back to the 70s - Leeds. Being an ex British colony and wartime ally it feels very much at home being there - they drive on the left and almost everyone speaks fluent English. You're in for a treat. Cracking result! It's the hope that kills you. In some ways a 5-0 defeat would have been easier to accept and process. I've just bought my ticket for the Sunderland game. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves against the Mackems. What's not to like there? |

Real shame that Frey is injured. With both him and Lloyd available I would have gone for one of them up top, alternating them with a half each. They can both defend from the front, charging down the opposition defences to squeeze them and force quick balls/mistakes which our crafty little midfield army of Number 10s could take advantage of. In the absence of Frey, I would still try this with Lloyd at least. Playing Celar, you might as well play with 10 men. Maybe start with Lloyd and then when he's knackered, switch to the 4-3-3? |

I hope I'm wrong and he goes on to smash in 100 goals in a stellar career for us a la Lineker. I dont know much about tactics, how to coach strikers, running in behind the central defenders etc, but in 45 years of going to Rangers I really cannot recall a worst striker and if there was he certainly wasn't given as many games as Celar has to prove himself. I think even Steve Slade and Brett Angell looked more effective. [Post edited 23 Oct 20:00]

And bloke near me in the crowd called him 'Jesus' shouting, 'come on Jesus', etc, every time he got the ball. Raised a few chuckles. He did look decent when he came on but is he really our new Messiah? |

Agree, Dykes was a million times better than Celar or Washington/Bonne. Lloyd imposed his pace and physicality on the Cov defence immediately and forced them in to having to clear their lines more quickly, which then lead to us getting more of a foothold in the game. I thought the positive introduction of him and Morgan last night was a real morale boost at least and gives us a sliver of hope for the future. Walking out the ground I was happier than my Cov supporting mate so that cheered me up even more! Maybe we're not as bad as we think, or possibly just a bit more realistic in terms of expectations? I'm bringing a Coventry supporting mate from work. Seemed a great idea when we planned it a few weeks ago. Absolutely dreading it. The only good thing is I have zero expectations. You never know, we might just get very lucky in this game, but I just can't see this team being good enough to build and sustain any kind of lead and then be strong enough to defend it. Any side in this division quickly understands that they can slice through our midfield like butter. Anytime we do go a goal up we then seem to immediately crumble. We definitely need a new plan!
