Maybe you're right mate and I'm letting emotions get in the way. I don't know, still not sure I see it that way. The fact he only has 6 months left on his contract doesn't suggest it's a classic case of buying cheap and selling for a large profit. It's more a case of a situation that's come about where we just had to go for it due to a contract being run down. Nothing of a model about it at all. And yes, £2m is a lot of money in the real world, but it's not major by any means. I'm sure the plan wasn't "let's get this promising young Irish defender in, keep him til 27 and then flog him in the form of his life when he is integral to the team, for 2m quid". I met Jacob Reeves the other day, centre back who Hull sold for 15m. That is more like it. And a jolly nice chap he was too. [Post edited 1 Feb 18:19]

Well I hope that is the case because the move makes little sense otherwise. If he does stay my posts are premature and I'll be like Alan Partridge to Tony Hayers ....." you know when I called you fat earlier.......?" |

It's a shame being a "selling club" in our situation equates to snapping off the hand of an uninspiring Championship team for a measly £2m, for your stand out 27 year old defender who is genuinely passionate for the club, involved in everything that's good about the team spirit, in the form of his life and looking to go nowhere. I had naively thought it was about buying cheap, developing talent and selling them on for a large profit. |

If Dunne is going to Sheffield Utd it really is a surprise to me. A surprise if he wasn't wanted and we let him go or a surprise that he's decided himself to leave. Yes, there's the money. That's literally the only reason I can think he's decided to go. Guaranteed that he will keep his flat in Chiswick and we'll still see him knocking about on the High Road now and again, because he absolutely loved living here. Only a few weeks ago he said in an interview that everything for him was about QPR, and he wasn't lying (it was to an Irish newspaper, so no need to). Remember his aunt who lived in Richmond and the family connections? Aside from his form and ability, the problem with Dunne leaving is that he is the heartbeat of the squad. He is always driving other players about in his car, always the focus of the group when in their coffee shops etc, he even started a group where they all lived in Chiswick and supported each other. Must be a funny life being a footballer. How will he feel sitting on the bench for Sheff Utd? Playing against his old team at the Loft End? Oh well, that's football. Few players really are Mr QPR, Mr Derby, Mr Chelsea or whoever. What an uninspiring move though. Oh and I think he'd have glanced in a header today. |

My original post seems to have spurred quite a debate. Ultimately it's a great read and highly recommended if you're a football fan, particularly one who grew up in the 80s. From reading it, I like the bloke. He sounds a bit too on board with the rainbow laces and taking the knee stuff than I am, but at the same time the way he dealt with racism and homophobia in the 80s and 90s, when it really was a problem, and his dedication and passion for football and fairness, is commendable. I also think he'd have been a perfect signing for QPR instead of Chelsea, and then he wouldn't have to pretend that the "vast majority" of their fans are wonderful! |

Anyone read this? Over halfway through and it's very good. Obviously lots about Chelsea but it's brilliantly written and he's just mentioned the 6-0 defeat at Loftus Road. Very interesting and a top bloke. |

I agree. I'm quite an expert on Luton Town now! It's very easy to have understanding and compassion for opposing fans, and an interest in what they think, when you've just beaten them. Very much the same when we beat Birmingham last season in the last minute. |

I'm a big fan of Smyth, from day one v Cardiff and his lgoal. Love him! |

I have always thought we don't play to this guy's strengths. He is a finisher, not a lone striker chasing lost causes. He had a few decent efforts earlier in the season where you could tell he had something about him in the box. Maybe tonight shows he does. So pleased for him. |

Blimey mate, being a football fan doesn't get much better than this. Enjoy the journey before you're back in the overrated Premier League. |

Frey and Jimmy are often together in Chiswick, along with Andersen and Cook. You're right, I get the impression Jimmy really loves being part of this team. He is literally building a Chiswick crew, he recommends every new player moves here. Frey seems to really enjoy living here too. Originally lived in Kensington but realised it was expensive and soulless there. [Post edited 5 Sep 2024 13:35]

I've been a fan of Paul Smyth the moment we first saw him v Cardiff at home where he scored a great goal, followed by a brilliant volley at home to Sheff Wed. Didn't understand why we let him go so easily but very glad he's back now. Ainsworth did very well signing Steve Cook and Paul Smyth. |
