Yep. We have nowhere near one of the worst squads in the division. Could do with beefing up in certain positions for sure, but most would probably say the same. Mid table is about where we should be. That's the key for me. Even a squad of poor players can look like they're organised, drilled, working to some sort of plan or even vaguely resemble a team of people who haven't mostly all met on the bus on the way to the game. Twelve months on after Williams arriving can anyone honestly say that's what we are? |

Last paragraph is it for me. It's just a limitation of a lot of coaches these days. If they don't have players of the right type or quality to play the way that they want to play, the concept of maybe playing a different way doesn't register with them. They're all so desperately one dimensional. All trying to Ape Guardiola. |

It is unfortunately the mindset these days. There are far too many people who build their opinions of players from what they glean on stats websites rather than actually watching games. "Completed passes in the final third" is one that people often rave about him on. Of course, mostly that's just playing passes from flank to flank. Hurting nobody. Creating nothing. Killing tempo. You can see that with your eyes on the pitch. You don't need Transfermarkt to tell you that it's pointless. Likewise the five or six touches when two or three will do, the immediate pass back where the ball came from even though he's in yards of space to turn, the runs made by forwards for a pass that if it comes at all comes too late, or behind them. If I thought he was incapable he wouldn't annoy me half as much as he does. [Post edited 12 Jan 18:27]

No team built around Matt Grimes will ever consistently play fast paced football. He can do it, but he doesn't. Him being the undroppable ever present, the conduit through which everything passes, is a major part of our problem. Hiring managers who continue to allow him to do it is another. |

I don't think anyone is defending MPH by saying that he should be playing AM. I mostly do it by stating that he's not a winger, which he isn't. Personally I'd see him as more of a Pratley type than a Paterson. |

Because he has no interest in developing our youth. Indeed, given the damage he's doing to Abdulai's career, a decent case could be made for him deliberately doing the opposite. |

Quite possibly. Basic human nature in action. It's a situation probably not helped by the people in charge of the projects on the Government side not being up to the job of managing schemes on that level. If you're a person with that level of ability then you're not going to be working for a Civil Service wage. You're going to be the one on the other side of it. |

We do it every time we build a nuclear submarine. Same basic principle, just scaled up. The skills and knowledge are most definitely there. It's so costly because of the planning process. It's probably doubled the price of HS2. |

And to think that there were people trumpeting that "The Grownups were back in the room" after the election. Currently they're making the last couple of Tory administrations look competent. This recent story is a cracker too... [Post edited 11 Jan 23:11]

Can you imagine him playing in a system like ours? LW would hook him in minutes for playing a pass that wasn't a 100% cert. One of the most fun players to watch we've ever had though. You'd never know if what he was going to do next would be brilliant or idiotic. All the talent in the World but a 10p brain controlling it. Apparently his missus was forever having to collect him from the outdoor courts in Glais because he was always down there having a kickabout with the local children. Just a big kid. Surely the point of the mobility car is to enable the child to get where he needs to without the taxi? Mum can get the bus to work. |
