Observer article 13:19 - Nov 1 with 6432 viewsStatzdale

Im disgusted that Simon Coyle wrote the following on Page 4 of tomorrows Obby

" You cannot help think that had this been a football match chairs and tables would have been flying by the time most fans had finished their first pint"

This was in an article about the Rugby League Fans in the Flying Horse last Monday.
Is he intimating that dale fans and football fans in general are hooligans , or am I taking it the wrong way ?

Feel free to discuss

No, I don't think you are taking it the wrong way.

It's sad, but no surprise, that the Observer has to tar us all with the same brush.

Indeed, five seconds on Google took me to this: http://www.express.co.uk/sport/rugbyleague/422387/Widnes-win-marred-by-fighting

Its the same newspaper that tried to make out a Rochdale fan tried to mow down a Port Vale fan earlier this year, and refused to back down despite there being no evidence linking Dale supporters with the incident.

It's just lazy journalism.

Either he has a problem with our wonderful club, or his reporting skills are about as good as his boxing.....

What a tit.

It's not just him. There's a general opinion spouted by ignorant clowns that all Football Fans are animals. That's why we have so many stewards. Its in all our nature to dash onto the pitch (not that stewards stop you) and give the referee and/or opposing fans a stone cold stunner.

The dark days of the 80s have long since past. Constant racist abuse doesn't happen in Football grounds despite what the mass media would like to tell you. Issues are usually isolated and dealt with by the police. Most of those problems are chavs with irresponsible parents. The numbskulls are happier going to right wing demos. Still ignorance reigns. I assume in some cases it's an inferiority complex.

Nice publicity! Without this deliberately provocative or downright foolish comment from a no-mark hack, I wouldn't have realised the Rochdale Observer still existed. Stopped reading it years ago when it left the town for Chadderton.

Advertisers please note: Planks like Coyle hardly encourage an increase in readership. Literally an own goal by Th'Ob, again.

The sports editor will, of course, be admonishing his colleague so as not to affect the Ob's relationship with the football club's supporters who might buy their paper to read stuff they haven't already read somewhere else.

Then they can print an apology under a picture of a particularly dangerous beer mat. Naturally, the picture will fill most of the page.

Simon Coyle is a tit, but I'd distance ourselves from any plans to ban local press from the club (not that you're necessarily suggesting it's a good idea). Newcastle fans have really turned pretty nasty since Pardew and Mike Ashley's recent spat with the North-East media.

I was going to make a thread about todays observer but glad already people share the same views as myself and one has already been made.

30 years ago was the last time Spotland had 9000 fans come through the turnstiles.
(not the Coventry City fa cup match) (or the Darlington play off).

I only read the backpage normally and usually do so as I walk out of Asda/Co-op etc.

Tinpot journalist, tinpot paper, me thinks he has a bit of Ronny Jepson inside of him.

Poll: Bottomley...

Yes, Dale have had three better crowds than 8872 in the last 23 years - v Northampton & Coventry (both FA Cup) and Darlington (play-offs).

Just don't buy the paper if you don't like what they print. There are loads of other ways to get your news and that reporter needs the sales more than we do as his job depends on sales.

I think that this shoddy, ill-researched journalism is part of a wider picture.

What did he do to research the last time the ground was full?
Ask around his office, possibly staffed by manure armchair fans?
Or did he actually look it up in a reference source? We seem to have to endure cr*pness in this town. Where do the planners and retail visionaries who control Rochdale actually live? I have long suspected that the answer might be Bury, and that they may be infiltrating our town to ensure it remains off the pace. It's the same with the people who think Rochdale's most identifiable architectural feature is.........College Bank (see any BBC news broadcast to validate this).

In Wednesday's Ob they have kindly decided to reproduce the front page picture of the lightning again on page 4. Two for the price of one is quite wonderful use of the space given to them. For more double-takes read the last paragraphs of the firework story, front and second page.

Blackstone Edge also appears to have moved significantly after reading the match report. Oh and look, there's a small space that needs filling above the fixtures - get that front page picture minimised a bit.

Those fixtures still say we beat Newport 3-2.

You could always email the Observer to point out their errors, but they will probably go against their own code of practice and that of the Press Complaints Commission by ignoring it.

Use your own name, though, not 442Dale. They might think you're two (or 3 or 4 or 5) different people.
