The I voted labour and want to apologise thread. 04:14 - Nov 23 with 8056 viewsmangohilljack

This space is dedicated to issuing an apology to the people of Great Britain—those whose lives have been jeopardised, the pensioners deprived of adequate heating, the homeless and veterans repeatedly overlooked, and the medically injured who have been callously ignored by a government that shows no regard for their welfare.

We are witnessing what may be the most disastrous government in living memory—one that appears to despise its own people and actively contributes to the decline of a once-great nation.

If you voted Labour, we invite you to reflect and express your apologies below.

Yes its now being picked by major news outlets , now why would Starmer the Charmer implement this I wonder , could it be that not to would inflict yet more pain and misery on him and his bunch of charlatans or as I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell , this is just much needed political restructuring aimed at improving voter choice.
But we know differently children don't we

Looks like Starmer and Rayner are planning to cancel some local elections in the Spring.
Looks very undemocratic but one way to keep labour in office in these councils.

Another policy not contained in thier manifesto.

Did I miss your post when the Tories did similar in 2021?

The Waspi Women is the latest own goal by this Labour government.

3.6 million born in the 1950s, were not properly informed of the rise in state pension age bringing them into line with men

The Parliamentary ombudsman recommended compensation of between £1000 and £2950 to each of those affected.

Liz Kendall apologised for a 28 month delay in sending letters but has rejected any kind of financial payout.

Not true, they knew it was rising. What a shame they have had to be brought into line with men. Equality is a bugger isn't it?

Strange men knew about it at the time. We all wondered if we would now get our pensions at 60 the same as women.
No suck luck equally meant women would get their pensions at the same age as men.

But this mess is down to the Conservative governments of John Major, David Cameron and then Rishi Sunak who failed to act on the recommendations of the Ombudsmen. There’s been a 28 month delay, but Labour have only been in power for 6 months so the met of the delay is attributable to our last government.

FWIW, if the neutral ombudsman has recommended a pay out I think we should pay up because you can’t pick and choose what rules and laws etc you adhere to, the rules should be applied fairly and consistently across all levels and we have to take the tough with the smooth.
Neither this government or the last one have been prepared to cough up and if I am being honest I don’t know if we can afford to at this time, but it’s a wrong that should be corrected.

Don't argue the Tories were to blame, but why did Labour promise them they would sort it whilst in opposition, and now in government change their minds.

There's only so long they can keep blaming the last Tory government

It is the photographs of Labour politicians (who are now ministers) with Waspi women, and the promises made at the time, that grate. There seems to be a bit of a pattern.

They seem to be trying as hard as they can to alienate voters. Possibly in 5 years things may change to win back some voters, but not in time for the Senedd elections. The number of times I have heard "I will never vote Labour again" is staggering. Welsh Labour have done enough damage, but Westminster is nailing down the coffin.

So Labour won't pay it, the Tories didn't and Reform wouldn't. Either one of them should.

The argument is that the women finally received "targeted" letters over 2 years after the Government stated that letters should be sent, and that this affected the ability of some women to plan their retirement to their best advantage. As you say, information was transmitted via other channels. I must admit that I'd say the impending change in the retirement age did receive a great deal of publicity, not least in the mass media, so that women should have known about it, On that basis a £10 billion bill seems to me too steep.

Extracts from summary of Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman report:

"We find that between 1995 and 2004, DWP’s communication of changes to State Pension age reflected the standards we would expect it to meet. Accurate information about changes to State Pension age was publicly available in leaflets, through DWP’s pensions education campaigns, through DWP’s agencies and on its website. That reflected those applicable standards. (...)

We consider that, if DWP had made a reasonable decision in August 2005 and then acted promptly, it would have written to affected women to tell them about changes to their State Pension age by, at the latest, December 2006. This is 28 months earlier than DWP actually wrote to them."
