Growing old etc PROSTRATE on 20:17 - Oct 11 by ted_hendrix | Been In hospital for the best part of today, today I had my catheter replaced after It was installed late one night In hospital three weeks ago as believe It or not my bladder was just about to literally explode as I couldn't pee, I had Nurses Doctors and all sorts around me bed and they were honestly just brilliant. I had previously had my prostrate examined countless times but unknowingly It had recently been pressing on my organs downstairs thus causing a urine Infection that nearly done for me (literally) The catheter Is a life saver albeit agony to have fitted and I've now got It installed In my bladder for the next three Months with the piss bag having to be manually drained every 3--4 hours from a bag strapped to my leg. Said It before and I'll say It until the day I drop dead but If there Is a God then may he bless those People who work In our National Health system. I'm 74 Years Young. I've been on Tamulosin for a few Years without any side effects. |
Hello Ted. I am also on Tamsulosin, without any obvious problems. Your experience (full up and can't go) must have been horrific. I have a very enlarged prostate and prostate cancer, but the latter is monitored and said to be non-threatening. The possibility of the big prostate pushing other things around and leading to an infection is troubling though, and I shall get a urine test next week. Very best wishes to you.

Growing old etc PROSTRATE on 12:37 - Oct 12 by HantsR | One thing I discovered was that when I had a blood test for PSA, one shouldn't have a lot of physical exercise, especially sex on the morning of the test. I'll say no more. |
Did you have a PSA score of 69.....?

Growing old etc PROSTRATE on 17:06 - Oct 12 with 2914 views | Lblock | What I would say is don't get too hung up on your PSA score As noted above, there is an "ideal bracket" according to your age but what's more important is the trend for yourself as an individual. That is why anyone over 45 should get their PSA done at least once a year, every six months if you're in a risk group (family history etc) Even if it spikes there are many reasons that could be such as a knee trembler within 24 hours, stress, been to the gym etc, etc.... however you need to have a median line SO GET TESTED. Next step then is an MRi as the PSA is purely an indicator. This is why I tried to raise as much money as possible for the roll out of a scheme to screen men in risk groups much the same as mammograms' for women. The argument against is that a Prostagram would show up extremely minor cases and cause those men in question anxiety etc, etc -- I totally disagree and think this should be available on the NHS at least every two years. Without an MRi I would never have known what was going on. My PSA was only slightly raised, the blood traces were minimal and put down to my ongoing issues with Kidney stones and the frequency of pissin was "possibly your (my) age". The MRi nailed it and thank the good Lord, but more importanly the Saints in the NHS, they found it when they did as it was starting to march. GET A PSA CHECK DONE REGULAR

Well I wish you all the luck going mate, due to me having the catheter fitted three weeks ago I was amazed at the things that were In my bladder when I emptied the bag, there were things that looked like small worms every now and then, I'm reliably informed that they were blood deposits, It's bloody evil. I'm now on the strongest asthma Inhaler going plus I'm waiting to have an operation as I have an oversize aneurism In my stomach, can't make home games at the moment although one of my lads drove last time and we luckily managed to park in Bloemfontein Road. I've been teetotal for over 40 Years, stopped smoking Years ago, I dunno. Anyone fancy a pint?

Growing old etc PROSTRATE on 18:59 - Oct 12 with 2749 views | cuprunnethover | Anyone here had a Multi Parametric Magnetic Resonance Image scan? Had a private PSA test done about three years or so ago, but read that it is not necesarily as accurate as one might imagine, for a variety of different reasons. See columist Dr Mark Porter in The Times. I gather that an MP MRI is a much better guide, sadly my GP is unable to offer me an NHS scan so I'm considering forking out for a private scan. Any advice? I'm not bothered that it will be noisy or uncomfotable in any way as I've already had several MRI's some years ago, its more the result accuracy that interests me

Why are you pushing for one? I’d go Prostagram By definition it focuses on the prostate only and is therefore a shorter scan and therefore safer Hope you’re good If you’ve got any direct concerns by all means PM

I used Scan.com to find a local MRI scan company. You can search for what you need and book through them. From my experience it was ok. I have been on a waiting list to see a physio at Hillingdon Hospital now for 18 months and have not even had confirmation that i am on a list despite chasing through my GP. I wanted to be ready if they said you need a scan and have to wait another 18 months. Ended choosing a company called Opus in Ascot who were very good. Cost 540 quid which included a doctor writing a report based on your scan and a quick conversation over the phone to go through it.

That's not quite true. There are 2 types. One is very slow developing and you will probably die of other causes before it gets you. The second is rapid and aggressive and if it leaves the prostate you are in deep trouble. Unfortunately speaking from experience. My grandad died of it, my dad had it and both me and my brother. Second type resulting in a radical prostatectomy (where they remove the prostate).

Growing old etc PROSTRATE on 12:27 - Oct 12 by numptydumpty | Yes think everyone should get themselves regularly checked out around these kind of issues as you get older. My dad and his two brothers both had prostate cancer. My dad and one of my uncles lived with it successfully after treatment and monitoring for twenty years both. Died of other conditions but my other uncle who was type never got to the doctors it was too far advanced and passed away much younger as it was too aggressive for treatment. As a relative with hereditary issues, the advice was to get checked out onceu I got to 50. Didn't have the PSA tests as they said had ten percent possibilities of being impotent or incontinent, neither of which I was greatly wishing for !! But the very attractive young Asian female doctor put on her rubber gloves, and stuck her finger up my bum, and no signs of inflammation, and a very unusual occurrence for me to occur on a Monday morning !!! You are asked if you require a chaperone when this kind of procedure is done.these days. Had that when had a vasectomy also. I guess it may help some people to have this. But yes there was no real test. Took my dad over many years to have his PSA checked over many years and it was always controlled. Know it's not the same as your situations but do advise all on here, get checked out regularly and definitely don't put anything off if any particular concerns, most things can be dealt with well these days as long as medical intervention as early as possible. The more regular peeing was another symptom which although common for nearly all men when you get older, from my perspective always best to get checked out as soon as possible. And if you want find out information go on the NHS website seriously do not do Doctor Google. Doctor Google is not very well qualified to give opinions that are often not real !!! Good luck to all with medical concerns... Even Chelsea fans !+!!! [Post edited 12 Oct 12:29]

PSA tests do not have any risk of anything going wrong as its only the blood test to measure. some of the surgeries do have side effects and potential issues but these are reducing as the surgical options improve.

Growing old etc PROSTRATE on 15:49 - Oct 16 with 1000 views | westberksr | right then; this is an area of knowledge for me.. .and countless dog walks with Lblock discussing the issue of the prostate have been had. firstly, mine hasn't been cancerous.... thankfully. but 8 years ago at the age of 48, a chance discussion with my GP about my waterworks giving me issues led to a PSA test. 3 days later a retest was required as the results appeared faulty... 3 days later another call for retest. following that a call to get my arse in quickly as my PSA was between 11 and 12, rather than the sub 3 it should have been. MRI and biopsy followed, the latter inconclusive so a bigger biopsy followed due to the concern. It transpires that it is not cancerous but quite 'hefty' drugs were prescribed and quickly discarded after 'little westberks' succumbed to the main side effect of going into a permanent coma! As a newly single chap back in the dating game after 20 years, he needed to be on his best (not very good) form. 8 years later and my symptoms had gradually progressed to a point that i couldn't cope anymore so i went back into the system. MRI number 6 revealed that my prostate (which should be about 40cc) was 225cc and basically taking over my nether regions.... but still no cancer. my PSA had topped 20, so pretty impressive numbers i was referred from Great Western to Reading, as they have better facilities and options, then immediately refereed to another department as it was still too big for their surgical options. 3 months ago I had pae (prostate artery embolisation) surgery. This is a reverse stent type of gig, where the main arteries supplying the prostate are blocked to cut off blood supply and help reduce it by starving it. Had the op during the first few days of the Euros and was home in bed watching the evening game the same day. i was awake for the whole procedure, which was fascinating and terrifying in equal measures. Upshot of the is is still unsure as i'm awaiting the results of the follow up MRI. However I've had another PSA since then and that is down to 7.1. Almost half my first ever reading and 66% lower than my last and my symptoms have definitely improved dramatically depending on the new measure they may go ahead and laser the bugger to hopefully give me a clear run for the next 10-15 years in summary, get it checked. A finger up the arse and a blood test are not that big a deal and if you are peeing too much or have any family history get it done.
