They havnt got enough pilots

Oh yes they have....
"The airline again denied it had a pilot shortage"
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-41414414

And in the same web page.....

"had offered jobs to more than 650 new pilots"
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-41414414

Oh wait if they are claiming they have no pilot shortage then why are they hiring 650 new ones? It must be because they are expanding. But in the same web page.....

"Slower growth this winter will create lots of spare aircraft and crews, which will allow us to manage the exceptional volumes of annual leave we committed to delivering in the nine months to December 2017."
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-41414414

So, in short regardless of pilot numbers once could allege that the simple truth is that they are liars.....allegedly.

BTW I'm going to the Villa game £45 return with Easyjet

Good that they treated you well Ted. It's not often you here a positive comment about their service. But at the moment, would you trust them? They are after all in a real state and it is understandable folk will seek out other alternatives even if they have to pay over the odds to fly. O'Leary really has to change his tact, and stop acting like Donald Trump and stop slating other airlines and businesses when his is far from perfect.

But at the moment, would you trust them?

As a long time user of them not a chance I would use them not for the foreseeable future either, as if last weeks news wasn't bad enough they've come out with more news today that affects some 400,000 passengers right up till March next year, what an absolute mess they've created and it hasn't just suddenly appeared out of the blue, they've known that this was eventually gonna blow up in their faces.

Easyjet? again I've used them loads and never been let down if i'm honest.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Significantly reduced demand for budget airline seats is another benefit from the Brexit vote. You voted for it Loftboy - you got it!

Utter crap, this is nothing to do with Brexit!

O'Leary started off moaning that they'd cocked up on pilots' holidays but as the story has unfolded, it seems to be more to do with an airline whose idea of industrial relations is; you feckers should be paying me for the privilege of working for Ryanair! Treat people like crap, it'll come back to bite you on the arse one day. This is all due to the fact he hasn't got enough pilots; they've all left to join Norwegian Air.

Our CAA has taken up the issue of Ryanair being wrong/lying about their compensation responsibilities; another example of this odious company's attitude to its customers. If the increasingly big-business focused EU has a shred of decency, it will do the same. However, I bet you any money, the EU will put trade first, just as O'Leary will play on the fact he keeps many destinations alive through his flights.

Now is the time for the EU/Europe to bring this git in line. I'd also like them to investigate his refuelling practices, as Ryanair has been known to fuel up their flights to the minimum.

I've used them loads. I spent 18 months commuting from EMA to Dublin and they are the only airline that does EMA to our nearest airport, Limoges.

But, their customer service is awful and they've done everything they can to wriggle out of compensation claims in their current crisis. Incidentally, compensation rules are an EU ruling.

The trouble is that many people will forget the current problems. Provided they sort out the pilot issues, people will go back to booking cheap flights.

You just have to treat them as a flying bus service.

Michael O’Leary, Chief Executive of Ryanair after arriving in a hotel in Manchester went to the bar and asked for a pint of Guinness.

The barman said, "That will be £1 please, Mr. O’Leary."

Taken aback, O'Leary replied, "That's very cheap," and handed over his money.

"We do try to stay ahead of the competition", said the barman. "We have the cheapest beer in England".

"That is remarkable value", Michael comments.

"I see you don't have a glass, you'll need one of ours. That will be £3 please."

O'Leary scowled, but paid up. He took his drink and walked towards a seat.

"Ah, you want to sit down?" said the barman. "That'll be an extra £2. If you'd pre-booked it would have cost £1."

O'Leary swore to himself, but paid up.

"I see you've brought your laptop" added the barman. "That wasn't pre-booked either, that's another £3."

O'Leary was so incensed and his face was red with rage.
"I've had enough! I insist on speaking to a manager!"

"Here is his e-mail address, or if you wish, you can contact him between 9.00 am and 9.01am every morning, Monday to Tuesday. Calls are free, unless answered, then there is a charge of only £1 per second".

"I will never use this bar again".

"OK but do remember, we are the only hotel in England selling pints for £1."

You're not wrong. Two weeks ago a RyanAir pilot phoned LBC radio and said he had to pay upfront to get a job interview with RyanAir !! Then he alleged he had to pay £29,000 to RyanAir for the training course to get the job.

I've never had a problem personally. One one hour delay in Carcassone due to fog, and obviously the planes are absolutely vile inside, and you can't get any kip because they keep trying to sell you stuff over the loudspeaker, and the ticket price you're quoted at the start is never the ticket price you end up with at the end but you kind of expect all of this. It's cheap and they fly regularly to places I spent a lot of time that other airlines provide an appalling service to - try finding flights to Biarritz, Bordeaux, Perpignan etc that aren't RyanAir.

But this 'we've messed up our holiday rota' thing is a nonsense. They're now cancelling flights through to March next year, how much fcking holiday do these pilots get? Clearly and obviously a lie.

That sucks!
My 83 year old mother-in-law got cancelled 2 weeks ago, three days before she was due to leave for Italy.
Her travel agent managed to make alternative arrangements, but it meant she had to leave a day earlier, and instead of flying out of Stansted she had to pay for a taxi to take her 70 miles - from Bishop's Stortford round to Gatwick.

Few complaints from me, so far. Ryanair is the only airline flying from England to Kerry. Flying Aer Lingus to Cork or Shannon adds an extra two hours to the journey, at a much higher price. I've flown there with them more than 20 times in the last three years, and the worst thing that's happened is one 45 minute delay, and some chewing gum stuck to my leg. The flights are always full of happy people and none of their winter flights have been cancelled. Obviously, if one was, they'd be the worst funking knuts that ever lived.

Well, of course. No one took the holiday rota explanation seriously, did they?!

Norwegian Airlines, the fastest growing low cost airline in Europe, have been boasting for a while about poaching Ryanair pilots, paying them substantially more in salary, and, I believe, giving them perm status, when many of Ryanair's pilots are on temp contracts.

If you're relying on temps/contractors to deliver your core volume (as opposed to short term spikes in demand), and you don't pay your perm staff market rates, it doesn't need a genius to work out you are at risk of significant attrition rates, especially if there is a growing competitor offering market rates or above.

A gross failing of senior management, and just desserts for a business model designed to screw their staff.

Ryanair hit the big time after September 11th. When the rest of the aviation industry went into a slump, they put in a huge 10 year order with Boeing when their factories were almost totally idle. Not only did they get a great deal on some super efficient new planes, but they also got a huge cost advantage over the incumbent airlines by having a uniform fleet, instead of a ragbag of models and manufacturers. They only needed one set of spares, and needed to train their pilots and mechanics on one model, rather than having all sorts of internal divisions.

The downside of these deals is that you have to keep taking the planes, unless you can pay high cancellation penalties, so your network grows and grows to add relatively low value destinations - you just aren't allowed to put planes on Heathrow - Barcelona. It helps that these real outposts pay you per passenger to fly there, but the reason they fly to the middle of nowhere for 99p is that they are paying through the nose for the plane if they use it or not.

NAS are following the same model, and have committed to buying Dreamliners that will increase their capacity by over 20% a year for the next four years. Ironically, they're not suited to competing with Ryanair, and they are going for long-haul flights were they think the flag carriers have high costs and share to take. But with the contracts they have for new planes, they have to find pilots to get them in the air.

Boeing and Airbus can make planes faster than pilots can be created. The shake up in short-haul aviation is complete, so there aren't many coming out of there. With the cold war years away in the past, Western militaries aren't producing anything like as many pilots as they used to. Ryanair are a natural recruiting ground, as they don't pay much and are a large employer now. Flag carrier pilots won't defect to NAS and give up their seniority rights to join a company that, unlike Ryanair, is losing money even before this big capital commitment. Essentially, NAS are paying up in a game of double or quits. It might work, but Emirates, Turkish and Etihad made a similar gamble in trying to break into intercontinental flights, in their case through a long-haul hub and spoke approach, and they are being squeezed to death as revenues have fallen short, but the new planes keep coming.

They won't. Business will be dented for a while, but when this storms blown over, people will be booking with them again albeit cautiously no doubt. Prices maybe a bit higher too if Ryanair has to recover from any crippling compensation pay outs.
Look at the fiascos with BA in the recent past. So called economic experts predicted the end for them, but no, people are happy to book flights with them still.
The airline business is full of pitfalls, shoddy management and corner cutting moves. But we passengers need to go places and will continue to take risks and fly with whoever we choose.

Nas actually bought pretty much the entire production of the new boeingy737 model which has much greater fuel economy than the standard model Ryanair use. It has denied Ryanair modern fuel efficient aircraft for the next 3 years. The Dreamliner are to extend the NAS urgent longhaul offering, hitting us and European flag carriers.
