'We really punished Northampton' - Pompey boss purrs over four-goal Fratton show Saturday, 3rd Feb 2024 19:48 by Pompey-fans.com staff John Mousinho was delighted to see some Pompey punishment handed out to Northampton. The boss did not think there was much between last week's display at Port Vale - where they needed a late Colby Bishop penalty to win - and the 4-1 win over Northampton, which might have been by an even bigger margin. Connor Ogilvie, Paddy Lane (2) and Callum Lang were all on target as the Blues were unfazed by a missed Bishop penalty and Tom McIntyre's very harsh rec card. He told the club media: 'I’m delighted. We were rampant in first 45 minutes and right at it from the very first whistle. My only disappointment was that we weren’t further ahead at the break – forget the penalty, we had quite a few chances. 'We put the ball in the back of the net at key moments and it was pleasing to get the first from a set-piece because it had been a while. I 'The second was something I’ve bemoaned recently when our wide players have got into the right positions, but this time Paddy put the ball in the net. It was slightly more cagey in the second half, but the response after we went down to 10 men was excellent. 'We gave ourselves a bit of grace – which we haven’t done enough times this season – and it meant we could afford to concede late on. That buffer meant it was a comfortable end. 'I thought the performance was fairly similar to Port Vale last week, but the difference is that we really punished Northampton.' Mousinho said the tackle that new recruit McIntyre was sent off for was not a bad one and they'd review the footage before deciding whether to appeal - although the defender was hurt in the incident, and may miss games anyway. Mousinho said: 'I thought it was a good tackle at the time. When the referee blew his whistle, I wasn’t sure which way the foul would be given, which sums up my thinking. I don’t know how else you can go into that challenge without dangling a leg and risk getting it broken I’m really disappointed for Tom. We’ll review it and then make a fairly quick decision on what we do next.' Photo: Action Images Please report offensive, libellous or inappropriate posts by using the links provided.
