Wanderers leave Pompey to wonder about the cup Saturday, 5th Nov 2016 20:37 by pompey-fans.com staff Pompey slipped to their third straight home defeat and although this one to Wycombe didn't cost any league points, it did spell the abrupt end of the season's FA Cup hopes. Paris Cowan-Hall and Adebayo Akinfenwa got the goals that put Wanderers through, with Gareth Evans' strike not enough to save the Blues - and Paul Cook admitted afterwards they got what they deserved. Cook made five changes to the starting XI, bringing in Adam Buxton, Danny Rose, Ben Close, Milan Lalkovic and Noel Hunt. The first scare was at David Forde's end as Matt Bloomfield struck a post - and they were as close again when Dominic Gape found the post too. In between Cowan-Hall had brought Forde into serious action and it was the former Pompey player who gave Wycombe the lead just before the half-hour mark as he pounced when the Blues made hard work of dealing with a free kick. Wycombe looked the likelier to score the next goal before the break but Pompey came out with fresh impetus for the second half and Evans converted an Enda Stevens cross two minutes after the restart. Gary Roberts was almost in on goal for a Pompey second before Carl Baker and Kyle Bennett came on in an effort to liven up Pompey again and Baker did almost put the Blues ahead with a long-range strike that was tipped over. Wycombe found second wind and went close a couple of times before Akinfenwa put away a cross by Garry Thompson. Stevens had Pompey's best chance of salvaging a place in Monday's draw but it was not to be - and now the pressure is on for Cook's men to give their home fans a long overdue victory to cheer when Mansfield visit next Saturday.
