England v TBC last 16 Match Thread
at 10:18 26 Jun 2024

The Swedish pundits last night were John Guidetti and Olof Mellberg - both said it has to be Gordon in the left, Rice & Bellingham in the centre with Foden infront.

Not really saying much but interesting that neutrals can see it as well.

They also had a long chat about how England are far too nice and would be a completely different team with someone like Rooney in it.

Halftime report from the Swedish tv pundits:

Boring, team is ‘far too nice’ and gets bullied, Bellingham anonymous, Southgate far too stubborn sticking with Trippier, can’t understand why Palmer hasn’t played a minute yet.

You’re spot on infact that right now it would be Austria

However if England were to put several past Slovenia tonight it would become Slovakia in the next round and if Czech Republic were to win we would play them.

So best bet is for Gareth to not try and sit back on a 1-0 tonight and hope the Czechs don’t beat Turkey.

Maybe I’m reading it wrong - you need a Harvard doctorate it seems - but it looks more likely to be Slovakia in the next round if we win the group and Austria vs Spain?

The answer is pretty simple - you play Rice as the ‘6’, you have a stern talk with Bellingham and tell him to put his ego aside and his country first as the ‘8’ and Foden as the ‘10’ with 2 proper wingers.

It’s important to acknowledge that indeed much of the vitriol Southgate gets is overblown and unwarranted.

At the same time, when one of Europes most successful managers - and current FA Cup holder - is willing to go on English national tv and say the manager is a coward whose only game plan is to nick one and then sit in deep and hold on, you know where the problem ultimately lies.

The obvious change would be dropping Bellingham in deeper, Foden at #10 and Gordon out on the left but Southgate is a super conservative guy, he’s going to end up going same XI vs Slovenia.

Pretty standard Southgate fare - get a goal, get everyone back behind the ball and try to be disciplined and hang on.

Again I have to disagree on Foden - he officially started 8 of 52 games for City on the left, 24 RW and 20 Central with those games being mostly FA & CL earlier rounds.

As others have said while I know we are told to turn our nose up at wingers these days, with Kane up top and Bellingham liking to arrive late in the box we should be starting with 2x proper wingers and if Bellingham isn’t deployed a bit deeper then Foden on the bench. It was pretty telling that’s Englands 2x best chances were Saka taking on his man (goal) and Bowen taking on his man (great save).

The longterm fear is that Foden & Bellingham will end up being Gerrard & Lampard 2.0 if the manager is not willing to drop Bellingham deeper.

I normally agree with you Dave and you’re often the voice of reason but I can’t agree that last nights game was a tricky one.

As said I was at Sweden v Serbia last week and they were as dire yesterday as they were against Sweden. They’re a very poor team whose only strategy is to be disciplined and compact and try and nick something on the break or at a set piece.

England should’ve won at a canter yet for 60 minutes Serbia were in uncharted territory expecting to sit back and suddenly being urged to come forward and have a go.

The possession stats were stark with how narrow England were, the one time Saka took on his full back it resulted in a goal.

Another problem of course is Southgate insisting that the unanimous PL player of the season in the #10 role cannot play the #10 role and then shoehorning him in at LW where he never plays for his club with predictable results.

I don’t want to gang up on Southgate and play into the cliches about him but last night was perfect fodder for his detractors with a team of offensively minded players looking completely devoid of ideas and tactical nous.

And as said, TAA is *NOT* a midfielder, Serbia correctly targeted him and they’re not a good team, if England want any chance of getting to the later stages he has to be removed from that role.

Stating the bleeding obvious but the first half decent team in the knockouts sends England home - hell it might even be one of the 3rd place teams in the first knockout game who do it.

With any half competent manager in charge that would be the end of the Alexander Arnold in midfield experiment.

I mean he is not and has never been a winger so you either have to play Bellingham a bit deeper or leave out Foden.

I was at Sweden v Serbia on Saturday, Serbia were really poor and any team less diabolical than Sweden would’ve put 5/6 past them.

1-1.

I mean you might well be right AH but at the same time he has been making decisions based on form so it’s not conceivable he punts for Gordon who has been flying over Saka.

Of course it’s all ultimately academic as we will be on the plane home the second we play anybody half decent in the knockouts.

Presumably it’s Stones and Guehi at CB, so it’ll be TAA and Rice infront, Bellingham behind Kane and then 2 from Saka/Foden/Gordon - wouldn’t be surprised if he goes Gordon left and Foden right.
