| Forum Reply | The folly of selecting Grimes at 09:40 22 Dec 2024
I think he comes too deep at times. But it’s either Grimes bringing us from defence to midfield, or we have to drop both our fullbacks further back. Having him in the middle allows the centre backs to split and the fullbacks to go forward. If he wasn’t doing it, we’d have more chance of playing through the midfield, but would lose width on both sides. |

I’ve said this before and I’m sure I’ll say it again. Grimes is the most criticised player on here by a mile. |

Like most things in football, it’s not black and white. Of course Williams needs to take blame for today. The players looked like they weren’t up for it. He’s got to motivate them. There are other issues like sticking to the same tactics no matter what and what appear to be pre-determined substitutions. Grimes was one of the few that put the effort in today, but he just looks shot. Two of his worst games for us in a row. We really should leave him out of the early season league cup games, just up see how we’d play without him. Williams will probably be scared to do that now, but he looks like he could do with a rest. The majority of the blame IMO rests with the previous ownership. Whatever people think about individual players or the manager, the squad is way too thin. A few of us have been saying it for a long time, it’s starting to become really apparent. Finally, on Luke Williams - attracting managers is like attracting players. If we’ve got a weak squad, disinterested owners and a low budget, we aren’t going to get the cream of the crop. They wanted Chris Davies. Expecting him to do a better job than experienced, higher paid, in demand managers in the division is like expecting a deadline day signing nobody else wanted to compete with the best players in the division. All in all, I think he’s doing a better job than I expected. |

We’ve got no depth at all. Williams needs a bit of leeway there. We had maybe 6 or 7 players in the squad today who either aren’t good enough, are too raw, or are well past their best. I don’t think anyone can sensibly argue he’s on a level playing field. He still has to take his share of the blame when half the team look like they don’t want to be there and for not changing tactics/formation when we need to. |

Im chucking him some blame today, because there was hardly any intensity or motivation all game, he’s got to be held accountable for that. But you’re 100% right. The crux of the problem is the state of the squad. We’ve got a decent starting eleven (bar striking options) and three or four good options from the bench. Beyond that, we’re in a hell of a mess. Todays bench - Ronald and Franco who would both normally start… Bianchini Christie Abbey Abdulai McLaughlin Naughton Tjoe-A-On We’ve been in managed decline for years, hopefully the new owners can do something about it. I think you’re right, it’s not a January job, going to take a few transfer windows to sort it out. |

The point I was trying to make was the possession is a bit of a red herring. We’re not winning games because we have awful striking options. People are blaming it on us having 55% of the ball instead of Vipotnik not anticipating Tymons cross when all Tymon could do from that position was put a cross in. An open goal if he’d known where and when to run. Not just him, Bianchini was worse today and those two and Cullen are our striking options. |

It was that type of performance. A bit like Cardiff away last season where they looked like they’d half downed tools. I hope not, but can see why you think that. |
| Forum Reply | Williams at 15:32 21 Dec 2024
You can’t argue with that. We didn’t want it, they did. I like Williams, but I can’t defend that. If we do look that listless in the first half, at the very least rip into them half time and send them back out firing. |
| Forum Reply | Williams at 14:59 21 Dec 2024
Worst I’ve seen us play for a long time. Everyone is culpable for that, but especially the manager. We are going to be rotating players the next few games and it does weaken the squad, but that’s absolutely no excuse to send them out unmotivated and not even do anything to change that at half time. Getting beat and leaving everything out there is one thing. Playing at that level of intensity is unforgivable. |

This was always going to happen over the Christmas period. If Franco wasn’t left out today he would’ve been Boxing Day. Same with Ronald. He hasn’t been on top form but offers more than Peart-Harris IMO. Expect to see more of the likes of Naughton and Christie over the next couple of weeks. |

Nobody says it’s the only way to success or possession alone wins games though. You’ve also seen us have the lions share of possession and win games. We have it most weeks. I’d guess we’ve lost every game we’ve had less possession. We also have more shots (in my opinion that roughly translates to creating most chances) than our opposition most weeks. There are some obvious exceptions to that. In my view, the fact we’re blunt up front is costing us more than the fact we have the ball more than opponents |

I agree with all that, we’ve just got bigger priorities. They rarely get injured. I accept it’s a gamble, but I’d rather cover CB than keeper. I’d certainly rather us bring a striker in |

We haven’t got a quality backup for our two out of contract centre backs yet, nor a quality centre forward. I’d hope they don’t waste whatever January resources we have on a reserve keeper who will probably never play. |

I’ve only watched a handful of U21 games online, but they look like training games. Good to watch and plenty of skill on display, but they aren’t as quick or aggressive as league games. I think he’s struggling with that more than the fact he’s playing out wide. The fact he only gets 10 minutes or so probably doesn’t help him either. |
| Forum Reply | Williams out at 11:47 20 Dec 2024
He’d be better off disappearing off on loan somewhere he can play 90 minutes in midfield regularly. He’s not coping with the pace and intensity at the moment and that would be worse in central midfield. Needs must at the moment, he has to be here. I’m not sure why Williams prefers him to the likes of Govea or even Naughton and push either fullback forward. |
| Forum Reply | Possession Based football. at 11:43 20 Dec 2024
There was a little spell between Cardiff and Leicester where he tried a more possession based approach. Either side of that was attritional dross. Not massively unlike Steve Cooper, but without the Ayew it needed to scrape results. I agree Williams needs to find a balance. He’s proven he can set us up to defend and to attack, he hasn’t managed to do both together yet. Needs to sort that out ASAP. This Christmas period is going to be tough, he’s going to have to manage a squad without much to it outside the starting eleven and a handful of others. |

It’s pretty obvious isn’t it. He went in their end, with a Swans top under his jacket. You don’t do that if you’re genuinely trying to watch the game incognito. If that happened in reverse most of us wouldn’t attack anyone but woukd be fuming. Plenty of our meatheads would have piled in. |

We aren’t a Russell Martin team anymore. Recycling along the back line to create space to carry it forward in the opposite side isn’t possession without purpose. We often do this, some see it as aimless passing around the back. We aren’t good enough to play Martinez/Rodgers/Laudrup type possession football where every pass seems to be a probing one. We tried Michael Duff football and apart from the few weeks where he abandoned his principles and we actually knocked the ball around a bit, it was worse than anything we’ve seen for years. |
