QPR v Oxfoooooord match thread

Full time! What a weird game that was. First half was abject, stepping up our energy levels in the second and two moments of quality from Nice Sam Field were enough. Can’t argue with a win and a clean sheet, but for the most part that was not pretty.

Oxford looked like a pub team, shocked they aren’t already in the relegation zone if that’s how they play. Based on the last couple of games, and the generally terrible Championship vintage we seem to be surrounded by, we may have picked a decent year to be a bit rubbish.

Ref dropped some absolute clangers, the pen looked clear-cut to me and not booking the Oxford player for a deliberate handball makes no sense. Very glad it didn’t come back to bite us.

The fourth official’s broken his light-up board too, which feels like a pretty perfect encapsulation of tonight’s general competence levels.

Field not far off a perfect hat-trick! Header from Chair’s cross goes just wide.

Excellent impression of Bambi on ice there, Patrick Agyemang levels of close ball control.

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but another four goals in the last twenty minutes would put us in… 16th.

Absolutely immense last-ditch covering tackle from Morrison there.

Even better finish from Field this time, on his weaker foot. Great work from Saito to win the ball on the edge of the Oxford area, and smart play from Lloyd to tee it up.

I can’t tell if he’s hobbling around at a slow jog because he’s actually got a knock, or because that’s just the pace he always moves at.

(In all seriousness it looked like a nasty collision, hope he’s okay)

Looked absolutely stonewall on the telly, both live and on the replay. Madsen got in ahead of him, had his heels clipped. No idea what the ref’s thinking.

Matt Phillips subbed off, showing the same relentless commitment and aggression tonight that defined his time with us.

We appear to have a little more energy and urgency this half, even if our quality levels are still absolutely remedial.

Edit: Sam Field you beauty! Our first halfway decent passage of play all game ends in a goal.

Half-time stats are saying we completed one cross and two dribbles, as a team, in 45 minutes. We’ve barely strung more than two passes together and have done absolutely nothing of note in attack. Put these players in different kits and this could pass for a non-league game. Gruelling barely even covers it.

Ref plays a full three seconds of injury time. He’s as bored as we are.

An awful lot of misplaced passes and general scrappiness so far, plus a properly head scratching free kick routine from Madsen and Saito. Could be a long night.

Final whistle, brilliant performance, Norwich were unexpectedly poor but we completely dominated them and thoroughly deserved the win. Dunne MOTM for me, just ahead of Kolli.

Very solid first half. Dunne the obvious standout performer for his goal and that covering tackle, but there haven’t been any obvious weak links. Two soft goals from Norwich’s perspective, but we were sharper and more committed when it counted.

Particularly impressed with how we’re bossing Norwich physically: snapping into tackles, pressing aggressively, and not afraid to get in the opposition’s faces or the ref’s ear. Such a difference from the meek, passive approach this team’s been prone to for years.

The movement from Kolli for the second goal was good, but the free kick only happened because he was alert and combative enough to chase down a pass back and (legally) leave a little bit on their keeper. If anything, I’m happier about us finally seeming to toughen up than the scoreline.

Norwich will surely be better second half, and we might need to ride our luck a bit. Just need to keep up the physical intensity and not retreat into our shells.

Toby Young would be my choice: a man so unbearable his own friends refused to go to his stag do.

Eze release clause
at 12:08 5 Sep 2024

Makes sense when you think about it: release clause deactivates during the final weeks of the summer window so nobody can put in a last-minute bid and leave Palace without enough time to recruit a replacement. Stays inactive over the winter to avoid losing him mid-season, then becomes active again in the summer.

Ball goes out of play, clock stops. Ball comes back in play, clock starts again. Matches are reduced to 40 minutes per half to adjust for this.

Also reckon the opposite of this sentiment deserves a mention: "he's useless, clearly never going to make it at Championship level, looks like he's never played football before, get rid of him, another disaster by Les / Hoos / Nourry, the entire club's doomed" after a new player has 15 minutes off the bench in a pre-season friendly, having signed from Atletico Timbuktu an hour before kickoff and speaking three words of English, and doesn't immediately play like prime period Taarabt.
