I went to the City v United League Cup semi-final in 2009(ish?) at the Etihad. Just before the kick-off they turned all the lights off in the stadium and shone a massive blue moon image upon one of the stands with pumping music.
I'm not usually one for gimmicks, the most annoying of which Judd has done a good job listing, but I must admit to being very impressed by this. There was an electric blue glow over all the fans and, at same time, some United fans lit red flares, which, by sheer accident, looked great in the blue glow.
Anyway, it just got everybody rossed up that little bit more for the game.
