Alfie Lloyd & Paul Smyth - Captains of Chaos 14:00 - Jan 22 with 1151 views | Rsole | I watched the extended highlights just now, mostly to hear a different view on commentary of the key incidents but it reminded me of the impact Alfie had on the game. Smythy must be hard enough to play against when he gets service but Alfie takes it up a notch or two and is such a great impact sub that takes advantage of broken play to another level. Imagine if you are playing on the left side of the oppo’s defence, it must be a ‘mare to play against them. After 60+ mins you see the subs and think phew - I can take a breather and then in the next attack you face Alfie bearing down on you all arms, legs, shoulders and somewhere between all of that muscle and momentum - the ball. And no, he doesn’t know where it is 100% of the time - or where it’s going either ! None of the movement seems to function together but it works and all of sudden there’s another opportunity followed by another and another. Far more effective and beneficial for the whole team than Sincs ever was and full of future potential. Yet, just like John Lewis was never under sold, Alfie is never quite under control - and what a great thing that is to witness, support and celebrate. Deep, unadulterated, farkin joy. He just makes defenders shît themselves and then ends up the other side of them. If he had better close control and finishing he'd be even better than Kolli. As it is he's still a huge asset to us.

Also, they run, run, run, so there is constant pressure from them. What Lloyd also showed is that if you put yourself about and in their face you can sometimes win things, something Celar does not do and as we can see its not hard. Scoring the two goals at Cardiff was more difficult and skillful for Celar than charging into people. So, really there is no excuse not to go all P.Fulong/Hugill on them as it works!

Said it tongue in cheek last night, but if Lloyd keeps developing like we’ve seen this season he will be much more useful than Armstrong ever will be - despite the superior physical attributes Armstrong has. If he can consistently receive the ball up top, hold it, bring it down etc while also being able to run channels and make defenders run towards their own goal, we have a proper striker for the level. Armstrong only ever had the physical qualities and BC fans I know are already saying that he doesn’t offer anything besides that. Lloyd will still need to improve his game in the box but those technical improvements alone in his touch and hold up make him a much more threatening player than Armstrong will be, because teams will know he can do both sides of the game (whereas Sincs just gets read easily and teams know what’s going to do before he does it). Lloyd has really really impressed me these last few outings, and the coaching of him is top notch.
