Record profits for energy companies on 08:33 - May 5 with 3160 views | felixstowe_jack | More good news for the UK economy. Shell which moved its headquarters to the UK from the Netherlands will now pay more corporation tax to the UK government. Most of its profits come from its Worldwide business. Strange how some people want to drive away successful businesses with an ill thoughtout windfall tax. Have people not learned the lesson of Labour windfall taxes on the UK pension industry which led to the collapse of a lot of pension funds as well as the end of the final salary pension schemes.

Yes even EU pensioners who also have a cost of living crisis with even higher inflation than the UK. They are unfortunately more dependent on RUSSIAN gas and oil. The UK is helping them out by exporting 10% of the electricity we generating today to France, Netherlands, Belgium, ROI and even Norway who are not in the EU.

Cherry picked counties of the EU, yes. Why that's a reason that our pensioners have to freeze I don't know. I'm not trying to make a Brexit point. We should be doing better. [Post edited 5 May 2022 11:35]

Fuel has gone up worldwide. And with the EUs inflation running higher than ours they would be suffering the same if not more. No doubt you would have the clueless Remoaners blaming Brexit , surprised they have not blamed Putins invasion of Ukraine on it , but no doubt some leftie, woke f wit will sooner or later. 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 Out and loving it

Something like £100bn stripped out of pension funds in the first ten years after implementation of Gordon's little tax raid. Idiot politics. There certainly should be some contribution from energy firms in the current situation though. Be it a direct tax or prohibition on further price rises.

I have not cherry picked any EU countries. The countries listed are ALL the countries the UK has electricity interconnect cables with. With the exception of Norway they are the closest countries to the UK.

Gordon Brown pretty much finished off final salary schemes with his ill thought through tax raid. Bigger profits for oil companies meam more tax, they effectively pay 40% in tax already. I think some agreement to reinvest in future technologies makes sense, the tax payer will end up paying for that investment in future.

Too many people think of shareholders as top hatted fat cats lighting cigars with burning £20 notes. Truth is anyone with a private pension will be a shareholder. It's in everyone's best interests for companies to do well and pay dividends.

Yes, and a strategy of increasing tax on dividends will hit any ordinary person with a money purchase pension........deja vu?

Our pensioners shouldn't have to freeze, if we'd stop giving away universal benefits and give more to people who genuinely need it, things would be better. Child benefit, free bus passes...I'm sure there's more, stop giving them to people earning above 70k.

Bang on! I can always remember George Galloway maliciously/wrongfully labelling people who invested in the stock market as 'greedy' on his Friday night talk show. He gloated about the stock market fall during the credit crunch crisis. That is the typical sick mind of the looney left and parallel universe mindset of someone entitled to a gold plated parliamentary pension. Yep! Some people should really take a step out of their parallel universe and realise that some people do it the hardest way possible in a vastly more uncertain private sector just to provide for that new roof, new boiler and new car etc.
