Those last accounts are a year (of covid) out of date, and featured our second year parachute payment. Operating costs then were £64.5m, and we're now a club that's going to be taking in ~£20m a year. "Skint" describes football in general these days, especially in the Championship. Everyone's playing with money they don't have, in hopes of promotion or a big sale (or three) to balance the books.

Swansea city is like a boxer. A bigger diet of the best foods is not necessarily for the best. Swansea operated well when money was tight with Martinez and Brendan. A tight cash flow forces the club to get more from its academy. The 20 years olds are going to have to really graft to survive. The likes of Cullen, Brandon Cooper and Garrick they have to deliver now not next year. Some time having no choice is the best choice.

Not bad, but he fought Henry at the wrong end of his career, a few yrs earlier he'd have been lying on his back looking up at the stars, i say that as someone who liked Joe as well. [Post edited 23 Jul 2021 20:08]

INS, OUTS, SQUAD UPDATES & LINKS 2021-22 on 00:31 - Aug 1 by ReslovenSwan1 | Very few talented players leave Swansea academy to bigger and better things over the years. Rhys Norrington-Davies is one. Why so angry? If they are good enough and determined enough like RND they will find their way to the top with or without Swansea. Its the start of the season and friendlies are misleading. The cream will rise to the top. The U18s always seem to start very slowly every season for some reason. |
"Why so angry?" Because our investment in our academy was supposed to be about bringing through young local players (from South Wales). This was working; - Wales have only qualified for the last 2 Euros tournaments because of the talent brought through by Swansea City - Swansea City have sold Academy players for tens of millions of pounds; Ben Davies, Joe Allen, Daniel James, Ollie McBurnie, Joe Rodon...Connor Roberts will be next or Cabango (or who knows, if they have a good year it could be Cullen or Ollie Cooper or Rushesha). ...but now, for the first time, our current crop of U16s have been thrown out on their arses in order to make room for a bunch of kids who have no connection to the club. ...and this is celebrated, as if somehow we are blessed to have these kids...instead of the reality being acknowledged that it is they who are in fact very lucky to be given a second chance here after being rejected by Man City/Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal...and it is our local kids who have been sacrificed. The bloke who delivered the news apparently stated that there was "no talent in Swansea"...his bunch of cast offs and beneficiaries of nepotism (the sons and siblings of coaches and ex-players) then lose to a local team 2-0. Sorry for caring. The signing of these youngsters from far afield is in fact an admission of failure by the current crop of Academy coaches, because the talent pool in Swansea (and South Wales) has been so rich for so long that you have to be a pretty shite coach if you think you need to make a boat load of signings from other club's Academies...Academy football is not about results (as you point out), it is not about making signings (spending more money in order to achieve results and massage coaches egos)...it is supposed to be about developing the local talent and polishing the next Joe Rodon up. We are letting top Welsh talent go , talent that we have supposedly been coaching in 'The Swansea Way' for years. If the coaches are not up to coaching top Welsh talent they should resign. INS, OUTS, SQUAD UPDATES & LINKS 2021-22 on 21:44 - Aug 1 with 3612 views | jasper_T | McBurnie was 19 when we signed him. Seems like the sort of import you're opposed to. DJ came down from Hull when he turned 16. Cabango joined at 15/16 and ended up jumping the queue ahead of long-time Swans academy boys Brandon Cooper and Joe Lewis. If we get a bus from Chelsea every year then fair enough but for now the u16s you talk about are still at the club, and there's only Tom Stokes I can think of off the top of my head who has missed out on a scholarship here this summer (there's usually one or two moving on to Newport like he's done). We badly needed numbers given we had to cancel a game last season for not having enough, and some first year scholars were pulling double duty in the u18s and u23s.

Yes I'll give you McBurnie. Daniel James had family connections to Swansea and Tony Pennock put him our way. Re: Cabango, there are always players from South Wales coming and going, he was a lad from South Wales picked up by our academy. Cooper and Lewis weren't cast aside. If it was only about numbers that would be fine. The reality is that nearly all of that current crop have been told they are not wanted...except for the sons and siblings of coaches and ex-players...it stinks. Meanwhile we are supposed to celebrate a bus load of youngsters from elsewhere taking our lads' opportunity. Nope.

There’s some truth in what you say but we’ve always let local boys go - Surman, Loveridge - god, the list is long, and generally the ones that have done well out of the academy are a mixture of local boys like Allen and Rodon and imports like McBurnie and James - there is not one proven rule.

The bus load of ‘signings’, denying opportunities that have previously existed, is new. It is nothing to be celebrated.

INS, OUTS, SQUAD UPDATES & LINKS 2021-22 on 18:28 - Aug 6 with 1962 views | Flashberryjack | Swansea City are reported to be the new frontrunners for Blues midfielder Flynn Downes. As reported earlier in the week, AFC Bournemouth recently ended their significantly advanced interest in the 22-year-old, while Town turned down an offer from Peterborough earlier in the summer. Now, according to the EADT, the Swans have made an approach for the former England U19 international, who has been training with the U23s having made it known he wants to depart this summer. The Welshmen appointed former MK Dons boss Russell Martin as their new manager earlier in the week with ex-Town first-team coach Matt Gill as his assistant. Town are likely to want a seven-figure fee for Brentwood-born Downes, who was the subject of rebuffed bids of £1.2 million and £1.6 million from Crystal Palace last summer.
