VAR on 15:30 - Jan 31 by hedgeend61 | That's what I was thinking, spins off your knee towards the net, stick your hand out, palm it away, penalty and a sending off? No play on, new rules. VAR wasn't even needed for that decision, it was a stonewall penalty first, second or 25th view to anyone but Mason, if he'd given it, no way would it have been overturned. That would 100% be given at Anfield or OT. The problem is they seem to be making up rules as they go along, at the time of the Man City offside goal against Villa (which Counted), BT studio ref Peter Walton said at the time, that will be disallowed for offside (It wasn't) then 2 weeks later he brings up some obscure rule as Mings played the ball, being 6 yards offside didn't matter If Danny had scored with that part of his arm, would that have counted? Doubt it. What was wrong when Romeu stood on the goal line and the keeper dropped it?, never in a million years that was a foul. Hands up, did anyone know of these new handball and offside rules? |
They are making up the rules as they go along because they keep having to adjust the rules to correct the ridiculous decisions that VAR is throwing up. The fundamental problem with VAR is that has introduced an entirely new perspective to refereeing decisions which could never exist in a football match which isn’t scrutinised by a load of cameras. Every VAR decision should have to be made ‘from the perspective of a competent referee or competent linesman’ - not reviewed in ultra slow motion or with the benefit of a video slide rule. But before they even get to that they should scrap this version. [Post edited 31 Jan 2021 16:14]

I think they should keep VAR, but change the officials! In the past, a player would have unfairly scored when clearly offside, or a player would elbow another player in the face and get away with it. A player like Maradona scored with his hand and so on. So VAR is there, for a second look. But that doesn't mean we need to be drawing lines, worrying about mm's or confusing the hand ball rule. The ref should go to the monitor to check things and make a decision. But get rid of the lines, deliberate handball is handball, and offside is common sense. A player clearly is offside if clearly in front of the defender. If not, give the goal. Offside is there to prevent goal hanging. A sleeve or an arm doesn't make any difference whatsoever, so just give the goal They are confusing it far too much, that's the problem. [Post edited 31 Jan 2021 16:28]

VAR on 17:40 - Jan 31 with 687 views | pjt50 | Anyone know where the drive to start messing around with the rules came from? Like not having to pass forwards from the KO & goal kicks not having to clear the penalty area. In all the years I've been watching football I can't remember ever hearing anybody complain about either of those rules & the changes haven't done anything to improve the game. If it ain't broken... I agree with all that, but I think they need to scrap it before they try again because otherwise they will just keep telling tinkering with what is currently a fundamentally flawed system. You can’t polish a turd.

Essentially the trouble with VAR and the decisions that are not clear cut is that they ultimately rest with the same incompetent officials to make the final decisions so I think that’s where the issue lies. As long as you have Moss Mason Friend Dean England Cootes etc having the final say we will always have this issue

The problem with VAR is consistency,if referees all stuck to the same new rules it would be more Universally accepted by the clubs and fans alike. The errors we had on Saturday, which cost us dearly , will go the other way by a different official. We will probably see Michael Oliver give a penalty for the same offence by villa cash, which is annoying and frustrating . All we want is consistency, all referees singing from the same hymn sheet, then these controversial decisions Could be eradicated.

We’d probably end up with Lovren and Matt Taylor in the video room

The underlying issue is that offside has become a joke!!!!! Obviously players move around the pitch on their feet generally and not the sleeve cuff or even their arms. So if the feet are onside the player is onside. Surely that would eradicate stupid decisions a la Bamford goal when he pointed to where he was wanting the ball.

The premier league is said to be the best league in the world , that said it is officiated by amateurs,Mason and deans decisions and performance would not be fit for a Sunday league game, the fa must get a grip with officials who are just not up to standards required at this level. They apply the rules at their discretion ,and it seems no accountability goes against them ,but a simple slapped wrist, and your o.k to continue to ply your trade at the next game. For me they are killing the the game , the enjoyment and elation of cheering a goal. The FA must stop playing around with silly rules,If a player is in line, and his legs and main body are in line with that of an opponent, he must be allowed to be onside Let’s bring back some of the fun of the game , try not to kill it as a spectacle.
