I wasn’t having a go at Jimmy Keohane. My cousin in Devon tells me that he was decent midfield player at Exeter yet he’s ended up in the back four with Dale through necessity. He’s a neat, skilful footballer.
It’s horses for courses though and we need a naturally left footed player to give some oomph down that flank.

I just disagreed with your comment "But the glaring weakness down the left hand side was ever more apparent today." I don't think it was, I think we looked the strongest we have down the left and Keohane and Rathbones interplay was brilliant. Obviously from experience we know this probably isn't something we can expect consistently from Keohane and we definitely do need a proper left back that offers more going forward on a regular basis. Today however didn't highlight a glaring weakness down the left, for me.

And I couldn’t fault our fitness. We were still chasing balls and closing down up to the last whistle. Plenty of running left in us. Impressed with that aspect

Yes. When i described it as "a difficult watch" earlier, it wasn't so much that we didn't put some good passages of play together, or defend resolutely, we did; it was about being desperate to come out of the game with something, else our confidence might've taken a knock and losing in the last quarter after all that effort would've been hard to take

We needed that point. Now we've got 6 days to recover and build upon it, injuries permitting

Goalless was always promising towards the end because Pitman has gone.

Excellent point if it turns out Portsmouth are top 8 we more than matched them for long periods.

Obviously undercooked and its a blow to lose Humphreys and O Connell to similar looking injures when both played well whilst on the pitch.

I thought Rathbone was outstanding as well as the young keeper bar the obvious heart in mouth error.

My first look at the Newby Newby and i liked him a lot too... time spent with Humphreys and it could be quite a decent attacking force.

Lots to be positive about we just need bodies back off the treatment table and those last couple of new signings.

Newby. So good they named him twice.

I was slightly less impressed with Bazunu's performance than most seem to be. While those two saves at the end were excellent and pivotal, he got very lucky with the disallowed goal IMO, almost gifted them a guilt-edged chance after a fluffed kick out, had to dribble round a striker on his own goal-line after a poor first-touch and wasn't particularly confident in coming to take crosses either.

Happy to see us have a keeper who is willing to play out from the back as per BBM's instructions but aside from those two saves he had me very worried yesterday.

Tangled up in blue.

Found myself thinking the very same, the final 10 minutes or so seem to have glossed over the previous 80. It's very early yet but I felt more confident with Sanchez in goal - especially with the ball at his feet - than I did for most of the game yesterday.

Edit: Taking nothing away from those late saves, which were as good as I've seen for some time.

Agree, he doesn't look like the second coming of Bobby Sanchez when it comes to taking crosses, that was a bit much to hope for. Decent shot stopper though, hopefully his command of the box will improve over the course of the season.

Also thought we dodged a bullet when he fumbled it into the net under pressure, but to be fair that's almost always an automatic foul these days.

Sanchez had a few rocky games though in the early days including the Peterborough game which was probably the worst Dale goalkeeping/defensive performance I can ever remember. He looks to have something about him & hopefully will end up as good as Bobby was. Is it me, but he doesn't seem that tall for a keeper? Didn't have my glasses on when watching the Portsmouth game !!

Sanchez is second choice at a Premier League club. To get a direct replacement as good was always going to be practically impossible.

Bazunu reminds me a lot of Sanchez in every aspect other than coming for crosses. He's decent with his feet, likes to play out from the back, makes you worry when he's chased down and seems to be an unbelievable shot stopper. Let's face it, that Sheffield Wednesday game would have been 7 or 8 had it not been for Bazunu.

He's also only 18, Sanchez will be 23 in a couple of months time.

So far I've been very impressed with Bazunu.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

Well said Chaff. Bazunu is a kid...but a very impressive one, and has already saved us numerous times with fine saves. I'm amazed to read people having a go at him already.

What I'm slightly less impressed with is that we have two keepers on our books, who are obviously not deemed good enough for L1 and thus, have to rely on a loanee.

I wouldn't be too concerned about relying on loan keepers these days - most Prem teams have 3 to 4 top class keepers and we've had great success down the years in this position. Lynch and Wade will be on the low end of our wage scale so it gives us scope to spend wages in other positions - presuming Bazuna's wages are still being covered by City in return for us giving him much needed experience.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

I wasn't having a go and I don't think jacko or richfoad were either. I was just saying that personally I think the praise specifically for his performance yesterday is slightly OTT.

This.

No doubting his fantastic late saves earned us a point, but just noting that there were certainly a few hairy moments leading up to it. As people have pointed out, Sanchez had a few of those too early doors, so I'm hopeful it'll get ironed out over the coming months.

Not just early doors - people are forgetting his huge error in over-playing the ball at St. James Park

Not knocking him, he was fantastic for us. His display at Old Trafford was outstanding. From what i've see of Bazuna, he's on a similar trajectory; just not expecting errors in playing the ball out to be "ironed out" anytime soon. The thing to remember is keepers are being required to do something that may or may not come naturally to them, and even if its natural, they're no match for predatory forwards

Fair enough...apologies if I appeared to single anyone out. I think he will be a decent keeper...and will no doubt make the odd ruck, but time is on his side. He seems to have impressed those choosing the team of the week for L1 mind.
