Dominic Raab on 00:05 - Jun 19 by Kerouac | When your friends on the left call a person with a different skin colour who disagrees with them an 'Uncle Tom' or an 'Aunt Jemima' , are they judging them based on their background (including race, religion, sexuality, ethnicity)? Have you ever called somebody an 'Uncle Tom' on here? [Post edited 19 Jun 2020 0:06]

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a friend call anyone an Uncle Tom. I’d never heard the phrase Aunt Jemima used until someone used it on here. I don’t have ‘friends on the left’.

OK. Would it in your opinion be shameful to use the phrase 'Uncle Tom' to dismiss what a black man/woman has to say?

Dominic Raab on 00:01 - Jun 19 by londonlisa2001 | You absolutely have not. I’d love to be able to live elsewhere - in fact, this lockdown has meant we possibly will try to do so. I don’t feel I’m remotely more enlightened or intelligent. What I do think is the case is that living in a huge, very global city for so long, you tend (It’s a generalisation of course) to get to know a much wider variety of people from different ethnicities, religions etc and that tends to change your world view quite a lot. But that’s not why I think like I do. I think like I do because I have always taken people as they are rather than because of their background (including race, religion, sexuality, ethnicity) and I come from a family that always did the same. You seem to accuse me of thinking like I do because I’m virtue signalling. I’m not. It’s just what I think. |
Why don't you go and live in Chaz? Sounds right up your street. https://www.thecut.com/2020/06/whats-going-on-in-chaz-the-seattle-autonomous-zon

Dominic Raab on 20:47 - Jun 18 by Drizzy | Considering the service complaints ombudsman said only a year ago that "incidents of racism are occurring with increasing and depressing frequency" I'd say it's a pertinent, if distasteful, way of protesting institutional racism. The majority of people don't condone it but understand the cause. The same can't be said for those giving Nazi salutes in defence of the memorials. [Post edited 18 Jun 2020 20:49]

” I'd say it's a pertinent, if distasteful, way of protesting institutional racism.” Just to be clear what you’re saying is the desecration of war memorials falls within the accepted pale of protest? Congratulations! If you’re aim is to completely solidify an anger that is already heightening you can now put your feet up and consider it a job well done, you’re a true Komsomolet. You definitely feel you're more enlightened, intelligent, grounded etc from living up there and you project it on us mere mortals who decide to stay at home. Let's look at posters like waynkerr, warwick, yourself, and others... All of you think you're the intellectual arbiters of this site. Which is fine, however you're not always right. Arrggh, just tipped crispy beef all over myself. |
There are posters on this site who are much more intelligent than others. It's possible that a fair ercentage of the more intelligent are not currently living in Swansea. Maybe that's because they pursued careers which were likely to be furthered more easily in London, or indeed other metropolitan cities. It doesn't mean anything. I think (because I occasionally use big words) some might class me as one of the more inetlligent posters. I ive in Swansea. So what? The real point is that the intelligent posters think clearly and post coherently. They are capable of changing their minds, because truly intelligent people have discovered that you have to keep learning or atrophy in your own bigotry and ignorance. The stupid, the halt and lame of mind, throw wiki quotes in the air like confetti and never change their minds.

Well I've changed political parties in my adult life whereas the 'intelligentsia' have always voted Labour for the most part, continuing to espouse the merits of Socialism despite it being a proven failure over and over again. So who is it that has a closed mind and stubbornly won't change it despite the evidence before them? What's your problem with Wiki quotes, is the only reliable source of information 'The Guardian' or left-wing academics?

It’s an American football term. The quarterback takes a knee straight after the snap to run down the clock when his team is ahead with a few seconds left. It’s sort of a “we’re not playing anymore” and the defence typically responds in a sportsmanlike manner and ease off to prevent injuries.

Yes I saw that earlier in the thread, I just felt like being a bit pedantic and make it clear that the term was never used in Game of Thrones

I've heard the phrase 'Uncle Tom' used a couple of times on construction sites. I turned up early to one job and was wondering if I'd be able to get in but found my site contacts already inside and when I asked them how they'd got in, one said "Uncle Tom on the side gate let us in" referring to the black night security guy. Heard it again in a similar context a few years later and on this occasion I recall the same bloke also used the phrase "our colonial cousin". EDIT: I should have added that these blokes were definitely not my friends. [Post edited 19 Jun 2020 12:42]

I don't condone it. The burgeoning anger is coming from a group of disenfranchised men over 50, football hooligans and people that glorify the military. I think last week proved that anger is fairly easy to manage.

I'd hazard a guess that she'd condone it (not that I do or should speak for her, mind) I know that my good pal (who's half Jamaican and half Jewish) has been called that quite a bit. It's messed up in 2020 that this is still an issue IMO

Uncle Tom is generally a derogatory term used by black people against other black people. Choc ice is another one. Think Rio Ferdinand got done for tweeting that at another player, might have been Ashley Cole.

Hi Lisa, are you going to stop being a coward and answer the question? I guess it has occurred to you that by your own logic it is those on your side of these political debates which have labelled people with non-white skin 'Uncle Toms' and 'Aunt Jemima's who are the racists...by your own definition of what a racist is. It's ok to admit that you were wrong, it is how we learn.

Ok Hump/Lisa. I'll have to repeat what I have said hundreds of times as you must be illiterate. Judging people by the colour of their skin instead of the content of their character, as individuals, is racist. ...but you and I both know that you will be carrying on making out that I am a racist while defending people on your side of the debates who use the term 'Uncle Tom' to dismiss a black man's opinion don't we? It's pathological behaviour from your crowd as far as I can see.

And now you're going to provide an example of me defending the use of the term Uncle Tom aren't you? No you're not because I haven't done so. People of any race are entitled to vote for any party they like and I've not said otherwise. And you talk about this as if it's something only the left do, whereas it's equally as common on the right.

Listen tw*t. If you don’t like racism call the next one of your Lefty gang who uses the phrase ‘Uncle Tom’ to rubbish a black man’s opinion a racist. After all, they do it often enough on this board and you like calling people ‘racists’ don’t you. You accuse me of being a racist on a regular basis even though I have never posted anything racist in my life (I have a black cousin you prick, I have had 2 black girlfriends, my neighbours who we treat like an extension of our family have brown skin) But you won’t, because you don’t give a shite about actual racism, to you the word ‘racist’ is just a word you can use as a weapon, something you accuse somebody of being when they disagree with your political opinions. You’re not fooling anybody. [Post edited 20 Jun 2020 23:17]
