Rod Liddell article in Sunday Times 21:27 - Dec 23 with 4358 viewsdiver

Superb article by Rod Liddell in this weeks Sunday Times stating that the balance of power in football has shifted from industrial north to affluent south.15 years ago he predicted clubs like Bournemouth,Brighton,Southampton,Reading and Swindon would one day be fixtures in the top division at the expense of Blackburn Bolton Wigan Middlesbrough,Stoke.
This should be minded when we start moaning about club directors financial dealings the money needed is just not there!!

Reading has been in the Championship for a few years now and Swindon are in League 2. Also Burnley are a "fixture" in the Premier League and at the moment Sheff Utd are 5th while Bournemouth and Southampton are struggling. The balance of power on the pitch at the highest level also remains with the north as both City and Liverpool are miles ahead of the others right now.

I think his writing was poor, the power in football is at city Liverpool and Utd, just because the jobs are down south, doesn’t equate to southern football supremacy.

Swindon haven't been a fixture in the top flight since 1993/94.

Which day does he mean?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

So he was partly correct - Bournemouth, Brighton and Southampton are regulars in the Premier League at the moment and the clubs he mentioned are all out of the top flight.

However Bournemouth, Brighton and Southampton will in all likelihood be relegated within the next few years - it’s how it goes there is a pattern of clubs surviving a few years then the bubble bursting.

Only Liverpool, Everton, Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea are truly established with the likes of Leicester & Wolves with their financial backing looking more secure.

The other teams could all fall out of the Prem - I can’t see Norwich or Watford avoiding relegation this season but with Sheffield Utd doing well an ‘established’ side will be relegated this season.

Just to add to that, Liddell predicted Sheff Utd's good form would collapse and then they'd go into freefall at the start of this month; as you say, no sign of that at all

Liddell's an entertaining writer, across a broad range of subjects including football. He's also a true fan (Millwall)

He gets a lot right but a fair bit wrong too, and absolutely nowt wrong with that; he doesn't present himself as a sage, but as a presenter of opinions and does so with often great good humour
