Ashes thread 17:11 - Jul 15 with 109115 views | johnhoop | Now that the World Cup’s done and dusted we can turn our attention to the next major event. For me the most interesting questions about team selection are; 1) Do we open with Jason Roy? For me it’s a no brainer. I know all the arguments against- he doesn’t even open for Surrey, he struggles against the moving ball etc- but I feel that he’s in such good form and the alternatives are so mediocre that it would be silly not to. If he does come off he could give us control of the game in the first couple of hours. Him and Rory Burns for me. 2) Now that Jofra Archer has to have a place in the side, who are the other two quick bowlers going to be. If fit I guess Anderson has to play and I would give the third spot to Woakes but this means no place for Stuart Broad and the 90 mph+ Mark Wood. 3) Which spinner to go with - Ali or Rashid? Ali’s batting form seems to have dipped but it’s still not an easy decision to make. Any thoughts?

That's a real blow - didn't see that coming. Must be really bad if they've already taken a decision on the Oval too. Is this the end for Jimmy? My thought is that Sam Curran might get the nod over Craig Overton on the basis of more experience and to support he lower order batting and Chris Woakes (who'll probably now need to bowl more). My Old Trafford team would be: 1. Burns 2. Denly 3.Bairstow (wkt) 4. Root (c) 5. Sir Ben 6. Buttler 7. Curran 8.Woakes 9. Archer 10. Broad 11. Leach Twelthy: Roy [Post edited 30 Aug 2019 14:41]

Certainly could do a lot worse than Curran, who's never let the side down and seems to have knack for wickets. Would improve the batting too.

More bumpers for the Aussies I assume, if the wicket is going to play that way. Still it's pretty harsh on Woakes, why he isn't bowled more I don't know and if you're questioning his batting form then you might want to look at the players higher up the order. Typical Manchester forecast though so there's a chance we'll go to the Oval still with all to play for.

Ashes thread on 09:11 - Sep 4 with 1824 views | ElHoop | Overton averages about 25 with the bat in tests - two of them in Australia, so arguably he could get in this side as a batsman. I suspect that he'll outscore a few of the top order here. His first test wicket was Steve Smith, so he's worth another try here I think, all things considered. I don't have any problems with the side selected, they just need to do the business now. I wonder whether Smith will fail here - he's been looking a bit 'Basil Fawlty without the bandage' lately.

Bowled pretty poorly this morning. Too many loose deliveries. Smith strolling along.

Bring Overton in and the spinner is on before him. Archer bowling only at 80mph.

Ashes thread on 15:13 - Sep 4 with 2228 views | TheChef | I'm going tomorrow and with the rain forecast, I have a real concern that any cricket I do get to see will just involve watching Labuschagne and Smith bat. I went on the Saturday in 2005 and didn't see a ball bowled, maybe I should just give Old Trafford a wide berth (football ground too).

There has got to be a shake-out in the Aussie batting line-up. Keeping them in in the hope they find form is bullshit.
