Ashes thread 17:11 - Jul 15 with 108513 views | johnhoop | Now that the World Cup’s done and dusted we can turn our attention to the next major event. For me the most interesting questions about team selection are; 1) Do we open with Jason Roy? For me it’s a no brainer. I know all the arguments against- he doesn’t even open for Surrey, he struggles against the moving ball etc- but I feel that he’s in such good form and the alternatives are so mediocre that it would be silly not to. If he does come off he could give us control of the game in the first couple of hours. Him and Rory Burns for me. 2) Now that Jofra Archer has to have a place in the side, who are the other two quick bowlers going to be. If fit I guess Anderson has to play and I would give the third spot to Woakes but this means no place for Stuart Broad and the 90 mph+ Mark Wood. 3) Which spinner to go with - Ali or Rashid? Ali’s batting form seems to have dipped but it’s still not an easy decision to make. Any thoughts?

Ashes thread on 17:27 - Jul 15 with 14938 views | qprd | englands test batting leaves a lot to be desired. im not entirely convinced anderson broad archer for me dont think spin will be that important- off memory, moeen ali does seem to have a knack for taking wickets, particularly at lords/rose bowl, and you get his contribution with the bat... not sure if this is a debate, but id go back to bairstow as wicketkeeper. bairstow is much better wicketkeeper and boundary fielder, but for a test, boundary fielding wont be that important. I have day 5 at Lords, which is unlikely to happen unless a day or two is lost to rain, and all 5 days at the Oval, which I hope is the Ashes decider. I will miss the pinkies at home on the Saturday, but that won’t be a problem not seeing those w@nkers.
Ashes thread on 20:13 - Jul 15 with 14693 views | Hunterhoop | Burns Roy Root Bairstow Buttler Stokes Foakes (wk) Woakes Archer Anderson Leach Leach is comfortably the best spinner. Woakes has been excellent for a while and is in great form. Foakes is the best keeper and the 6 above are the best batsmen. That team has your best 3 seamers, the best spinner, the best keeper, the best all rounder, and the best 5 other batsmen available. The only qn marks are: Root would have to bat 3, Roy as a Test opener is a gamble. But he has to be a better bet than Jennings. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Ashes thread on 20:20 - Jul 15 with 14683 views | qpr1976 | Day 3 Headingley & Day 2 Oval for me. Love Lords but it’s pricing is getting out of hand. £150 ! Spoilt for choice re: pace bowlers. Assuming fit Anderson, Broad & Archer, which is tough on Woakes, Wood & Curran (Sam) but they get get a chance if Anderson not fit or other 2 struggle. Rashid over Ali for me. I want a bowler who can actually spin the ball. Ali get most of his wickets boring the batsman out much like Giles used to (which means he’ll probably get the nod !) Ali’s batting has been less than average for years. Foakes is an interesting shout. Need to keep Root at 4 Burns Bairstow Roy Root Butler Stokes Foakes Rashid Broad Archer Anderson

Like Rangersw12, I'd be looking to get Sibley into the team. Root has made it perfectly clear that he wants to bat a four, so I'd push Roy down to three and, regrettably, omit Foakes.
Ashes thread on 21:00 - Jul 15 with 14625 views | BlackCrowe | Day 5 for Lords (and agree the pricing there now is utterly insane - £150 - wtf). And days 1, 2 and 3 at Oval. Roy and Bairstow opening - why not? They clearly love playing together. Archer instead of Broad, sad though it is to say it.

Ashes thread on 22:00 - Jul 15 with 14569 views | ElHoop | Very difficult to predict the side for the first test as so many bowlers are carrying injuries. Anderson doubtful, Archer doubtful, Wood out. Woakes tired. The game against Ireland will give the second string a chance to get in the side for the first test and given that Edgbaston is a good ground for us, those selected may keep their places for Lord's. Sam Curran just took six wickets in the Lions game against Oz A. He's also scored a few runs. He's a certainty for the Ireland game alongside Broad and both are likely to go onto Edgbaston. I think that Roy is carrying an injury too so he might not play against Ireland - Bairstow reportedly tired and they are likely to rest Buttler and Stokes. First Test might look something like this then: Burns Roy Bairstow Root Stokes Buttler Foakes Woakes Curran Rashid Broad

I like that team for the opening test a lot and agree on Foakes, Woakes and Leach but I wouldn't rule Wood, Broad, the Currans or Ali out of the series. Broad especially is never more dangerous than when he thinks he is being underestimated, and loves playing the Aussies.

Ashes thread on 03:02 - Jul 16 with 14435 views | Hooparoo | You never know with Starc and Cummins in the team but I’m not feeling confident. Would be happy if it’s at least a good contest. Crowds booing Smith and Warner will probably mean they’ll both do well with the bat so I’d suggest that the Barmy Army might want to move on from “Sandpaper gate”. It will have the opposite effect on the whole Aussie team. 😉

He did, but has returned to Test cricket in 2018, he played against India here last Summer and in the West Indies earlier this year. I can confirm this to be true as I saw him play in both. Just for the cricket geeks, in the 2nd Test v India at Lords last Summer, he didn’t bowl a single ball in either of India’s Innings (107 & 130 with Anderson, Broad and taking all but 1 wicket), nor did he bat as England declared on 396-7 with him due in at 9, nor did he take a catch ! Which just shows how little I rate Moeen to select Adil ahead of him......

Booing an opposition player or players is something that comes natural to fans.We don’t always think about what our actions might do to those players we’re booing. We didn’t think that booing any Chelshite player might make them play better because of it,so I suspect it won’t be in the minds of the people doing it during the Ashes. I suspect that Warner and Smith are strong enough to ignore it and use it to spur them on,but did the Aussie fans stop booing Broad for not walking a few years ago?Or did they not abuse any England players during the last Ashes series? I was there for the last 3 tests 18 months ago,and I heard some of the insults directed at certain players in the England team, some of which definitely crossed the line. I won’t be resorting to some of the boorish behaviour that I witnessed in both Melbourne and Sydney, but I might be tempted to show my displeasure at some of your players by booing occasionally if I choose. All the best for a good series between 2 more evenly matched teams than I saw 18 months ago,and hopefully there won’t be any leaf blowers in sight in order to get the game finished artificially. Game on.

Ashes thread on 09:55 - Jul 16 with 14287 views | toboboly | Prior to the Ashes there is the game next week v Ireland. For that game I would rest all the World Cup players except perhaps Archer and play some periphery players. Remember Archer hasn't yet played 30 first class games. Not saying he won't be good but I don't think he should be expected to jump into the hardest test series and play all 5. Maybe use him against Ireland and then draft him in for the odd game in the Ashes.

Any signs of muscle fatigue/ strain then I would pull him to save his future but if he is fit, let him play.

Fair enough. I’ve never booed the opposition but I may have made an exception for John Terry if I’d been in the Loft a few seasons ago. 😉

It's not so much whether it's OK - it's whether it does any good. Just makes them more determined IMO. Taking the p*ss is the better option. Or if you really want to make a point: ignore them. Greet them with complete silence onto the pitch and off it again, don't applaud boundaries or landmarks. I think that might really get to them.
Ashes thread on 10:34 - Jul 16 with 14238 views | Dorse | I like what I've seen of Woakes. His style reminds me of Glenn McGrath in some ways, as he consistently picks a decent line and his slower ball looks hard to pick. I've heard different reports about his current fitness but we've got all Summer so he will almost certainly feature. The bowling, whether as pace, change-up or spin, has a huge number of options, the middle order pretty much picks itself but the opening pair still concerns me. Keaton Jennings just doesn't feel like a safe bet. Jason Roy feels like a good fit but I can't think of a partner.
