Dreadful pictures emerging of what looks like a devastating fire at Notre Dame in Paris.

An awe inspiring cathedral. Hopefully it can be saved and the damage repaired.

It’s absolutely gut wrenching to see such beauty being destroyed.

This’ll make them feel better.

It will certainly make them feel better than a moron saying “no biggie” don’t you think?

The only current project I can think of is the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Which is also magnificent,

It’s the destruction of history that is so utterly sad.

If ever there was an eyesore the Sagrada Famila must take the biscuit

You have the first half started in the late 19th Century in the Gaudi design. But now being completed in the more modern design

When it will be finished. God only knows

A right shambles

The Gaudi part always reminds me of a child playing on the beach making sand castles, then covering it with cockle shells

Just because a building was started in the 1880 or there about Totally mismanaged when being constructed and everything that went with building such a monstrosity. Doesn’t make it a fine architectural building

When the U.K. have such fine architectural buildings like St Paul’s with that fabulous dome, Westminster Abbey and York Minster. Sagrada Famila don't come into the reckoning

It’s not the most famous ffs half of today’s generation have probably never heard of it,stop making things up.

Ok fair enough.
Can you tell me please what is the most famous landmark in France that has more historical and culturural importance behind it than Notre Dame? The site goes back to Roman times.

And please don't say that lump of scrap iron known as the Eifel Tower.

Very sad to see. I visited many times with my school and my family and we all found it amazing.

As alluded to earlier in this thread buildings can eventually be repaired/restored.

I'm pretty sure many rich and famous plus "Joe bloggs" will raise some funds like they did in other tragedies to hit their fine country in recent times.

Really?

It's a shame it's burnt down, as I said, but compare the hyperbole going on right now to the destruction of significant historical sites by IS, some holding works that dated back to 5000BC. There was nowhere near the outpouring we see today for some strange reason.

Isn't it the case that a lot of the artwork there were actually reproductions, the originals being destroyed in the French Revolution?
