All Time Dale XI - Whats the best XI you saw play [4-4-2] on 08:30 - Jan 30 by D_Alien | Hardly forgotten, it's rolled out whenever FA Cup memories are featured on tv What does get omitted is his goalscoring record whilst at Dale; off the top of my head, 1 goal in about 40 appearances, and that a penalty. Makes Calvin Andrew look prolific, and makes his subsequent feats with West Ham all the more remarkable He was, of course, a decent player in a very poor Dale side, but hardly did enough whilst here to justify getting anywhere near a best XI |
I could be wrong but didn't his subsequent career fade out pretty quickly after the high of that West Ham Cup run ?

He was the hammers top scorer the following seasin and had some good games in the old euro cup winners cup but after that he was hampered by injuries. Bounced around various clubs, including norwich and burnley and had a spell at Vancouver Whitecaps. In response to Dalian he was not seen as a goalscorer, but a producer. His first few games at the hammers changed all that.

Better than I thought then. I expect he was one of those quick players that are always plagued by muscle type injuries.

He was deployed in an advanced midfield role, similar to say, Steven Dooley. His lack of goals from that position was remarked on even before Hammers interest, although it wasn't particularly held against him since we weren't a good side and at least he could play a bit

All Time Dale XI - Whats the best XI you saw play [4-4-2] on 12:44 - Jan 29 by D_Alien | If you're looking for a rock to replace Jobson, look no further than Alan Johnson, possibly the best defender i'd seen at Dale until Dawson arrived, but whose time with us was cut short by injury |
Couldn't agree more. Johnson was an absolute force.

Yep, Johnson was a rough and tumble centre half who could play a bit as well. John Bramhall was another one in the same mould. I remember the Wimbledon League Cup game at Spotland were John and " Fash the Bash " had a game of their own with no ball ! Blood curdling stuff. They could have both played in the pack for Hornets no problem. When I first started watching Ray Aspden was a class act at centre half. In the promotion team Colin Parry was another rock in the middle. I always thought Alan Reeves was a terrific centre half who could also play football. [Post edited 30 Jan 2019 12:38]

Always was a big fan of Alan Johnson. Real shame about his injury problems. I'll always remember him trying to fight back to fitness. He then finally made the bench and came warming up near the Pearl street. The whole stand started singing Alan Johnson Walking in a winter wonderland. Great moment.

Hammers got to the final of the cupwinners cup and faced a very strong anderlecht side in the final played on their home territory (brussels). It was a cracking game which anderlecht finally came out on top 4-2 thanks to doubles from robbie rensenbrink and frank van der elst. Taylor came in as sub early in the second half...i think the only former dale player to play in a european final.

John bramhall was a great influence on us surviving, Paul Conner for a short time was awesome, Milner, Stuart and Whitehall I recall scored over 15 each 1 season (await tvos confirmation) Before my time but what was the lad who went to West Ham called, Hudson? |
Stuart didn't join us until 1993 and season 93/94 was Milner's last. In that campaign, Dave Lancaster got 15, Steve Whitehall 15 and Stuart 15! Milner got two. The season before (92/93), Whitehall got 15 and Flounders got 14. In 91/92, Flounders had 18, Milner had 15 and Whitehall had 11 which is probably the season you're thinking of.
| When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf? |

They were a good team to watch. I was a regular then along with my youngest son. Whitehall could have played at a level above in my opinion.

They certainly were. There were some cracking games in those seasons, usually outweighing the poor ones by some distance.

Thanks TVOS. Can’t recall us ever having 3 players get 15 goals each in 1 season other than this one. I recall someone in the sandy shouting “Lanky, tell that Williams to F off” he then responded by lifting his training top to reveal the number 9 shirt, although he struggled a bit, to loud applause and cheering.

Horrible manager for us but fantastic before he got the job. Two times in my life when winning a free kick within 25 yards seemed to generate the same celebrations from the Dale fans as a penalty - when our FK takers were Lambert and Simmo. Is Dawson the player who everyone can agree on?

Without doubt the era I’d choose to watch over any other. Yes, results and quality may not have been up to the standards of the last decade or so, but it remains the best of times to be a football fan.
