The election results thread 19:10 - Jun 8 with 59014 viewsexiledclaseboy

Polls close 10pm. BBC, ITV and SKY release the results of their joint exit poll also at 10pm. Some of you may remember election night two years ago when the exit poll predicted a Tory win. It was roundly ridiculed by politicians of all parties and most us on here. You could see Professor John Curtice (who oversees the poll) visibly wilting and wondering if he'd just wrecked his career and reputation. The same Prof Curtice got progressively more smug as the night rolled on and it turned out his poll was more or less spot on.

First result due about 11pm. From Sunderland.

The outcome may be a foregone conclusion but it should be exciting for about an hour or so.

Get it stickied for 24 hours or so please, mods.

Oh, and can someone keep Perch and Bluey away from sharp objects please. Just in case.

Doesn't look like any of the national polls are worth anything. Too much regional variance,

Aren't you a committed brexiteer though brynnie?

This result would be the worst of all worlds for that wouldn't it?

I mean this would be perfect in my mind because of the Brexit impact.

Yes but I followed the Frank Field school of though not UKIPs. My major aspiration, and you will remember that some on here wrote Corbyn off (whilst only two or three of us defending him) was labour return to policies that reflected their original ideology .

Won Darlington and looks like Gower and Aberconwy as well.

This could be massive for Labour under Corbyn. Massive.

Retained Darlington.

Tories are doing better than expected swing wise in traditional Labour heartlands up north. It's a bizarre election.

Not winning any of them so far though, which was always the plan.

Gower heading red.

Remainers getting revenge in London.

So many factors in play. Sounds like the youth vote has turned out. Big turnout can only be a good thing for Labour.

Plan if it were to be a landslide, like Darlington.

We know that's not going to happen, but a Tory majority isn't out of the equation.

Surely TVX would be more appropriate, unless you long to ride wildly on the back of Paxman, gripping his silvery mane as he motorboats Mitchell's buttocks.

Mate, give it up. The Tories are getting smashed because of a pisspoor campaign and the young vote actually turning up.

Forget the majority, you should be hoping its not worse than that...

It isn't, but this is a heading for a disastrous night for the Tories. Increasingly unlikely to better where they were, and increasingly likely not to even have a majority. Surely nobody is pretending this would be a good night for the Tories if this pans out.

I think many (including me) underestimated the anti Hard Brexit vote that seems to be happening.

The odd thing is that people are putting their faith in Labour not delivering anything like the Brexit the Tories are saying they would do, despite there being little indication that this is right.

Whatever happens now, I think hard Brexit is unlikely.

Which is , of course much better for ALL of us.

Interestingly the BBC are trying to dress up this as some kind of conservative success, gaining a swing in 3 labour held seats but losing them all!!!!

I've said it's been a poor campaign. May will be gone before next election.

The youth vote, long term, could have a different effect. Corbyn is selling idealism, not realism nor pragmatism. Those "old" voters blamed and castigated for voting Tory were young and idealistic once.
