Is our current malaise a sign of teams doing their homework on our style of play and implementing the way to counter us? You simply have to watch the Wendies match to learn the tactic: (opposition spies look away now) play a high line and press us.
We don't seem to have an answer to this, as we need space to get our passing game going and, if our wingers are not bang on form, have nobody to get behind their line. We have relied on Hendo (whose form has dipped of late) and latterly Done, to do this for us.
This is where we need a Plan B but don't seem to have one. As ugly as long ball is, when teams set out to play like that, it is the most effective. However, we only have Vincenti we could use like that and his talents are used elsewhere on the pitch.
Just a thought.

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

We tried long balls to Bunney yesterday and it was a waste of time. Some hack who watched us against Chesterfield tweeted the same idea on how to counter us prior to the Wednesday game. Even he could see it. Thing is, other teams have tried this and we have overcome it. A lot of our malaise is down to the players themselves at the minute.

Spot on with the first part - unfortunately at the moment we've got no answer to being pressed high up the pitch. We need more imagination and pace - with Hogan out surely there's a role for Hery and Gray to give us more of a surprise element in the last 3 games? Expect Hill will go the other way though and wheel out BBM and Kennedy.

Well if BBM is drafted in that will prove Hilly has lost the plot. We have far better players than BBM who hasnt featured all season and must be pushing 40 years old soon.

We have good enough players to still do this with ease. Three points clear of Fleetwood with a far easier last 3 games to play.

Its just a mental thing and the players should start the Bristol game determined to be back at the top of the league by the final whistle its as simple as that, forget worrying about dropping points.

If the players are feeling nervous they want to put themselves in there opponents shoes because their football league existence is on the line, now thats real pressure. Time for the players to take responsibility, play with freedom and be brave.

It was a tactical disaster yesterday aiming high balls at Bunney on the right wing with Vincenti on the bench. Bunney did his best but no way is he as effective as Vincenti who has proved many times his value on the right wing in the air
The opposition in recent matches have certainly stopped our full backs getting into attacking positions (not least yesterday when Done struggled against their pacy right winger) and we have certainly been 'sussed' out. Without Hogan it is easy to see why we have stopped scoring goals
Allen, who appeared to be the only player able to pass the ball yesterday, must surely be on from the start on Monday
If BBM comes in and (and/or JK ?) it will be a backward step to my mind. What we need is more pace in midfield and neither can provide that
However there is still no reason why we cannot get automatic promotion if we can somehow start scoring goals again
No match is easy in this division but we could not have picked three 'easier' final fixtures (though to beat Bristol or even get a point we are going to have to battle like we've never done before as they will be fighting to stay up)
Let's keep thinking positive - we are still in the top three which is a position we could have only dreamed about at the start of the season and the automatic promotion is still in our own hands

Mansfield was an alleged "easier" game.

Not by me - at the time Mansfield were second to York at the top of the last 8 games table and were having a great run of form

In the last 8 matches Bristol R have taken 5 points, Cheltenham 8 and Newport 9

If we can't take enough points from these teams to get automatic promotion then we don't deserve to

Below is the line up that played against Leeds, do we need to go back to this? Having Vincenti right wing and Bunney left, would stop the opposition playing a high line and the full backs bombing forward.

If Scotty and Jack O'C are injured replace them with round pegs in round holes. Eastham has done very little wrong and put a rocket up George's arse and tell him to run his arse off.

Or is going to our best performance of the season, with the same tactics to simple?

Rochdale

03 Bennett
16 Done
04 Cavanagh
06 Lancashire
22 O'Connell

07 Vincenti
39 Bunney

Substitutes
02 Rafferty
05 Eastham
09 Donnelly
21 Thomson
24 Allen
29 Cummins
38 Dicker

But we had Hendo and Bunney wide in the first half yesterday, it wasn't the tactics more that Southend's players were better. Bunney got some joy out wide right in the first half too, but maybe a shift to the left rather than alongside the hapless Donnelly after the break might have worked better.

With Will Atkinson in top form, our midfield couldn't cope. That's where it was won and lost.

Bunneys heading ability out on the flanks is nowhere near that of Vincentis. He seemed to mistime and jump under nearly every long ball during the first half.
I like Bunney though and would try to fit him into the team on Monday if possible but try to get him a bit more central. Vincenti and Allen also have to start.

I agree, Bunney's timing on his jumps is off most of the time. When he gets it right he's clever enough with his flick ons, but Vincenti is the better option for high balls out wide.

One of the most mystifying things this season has been the amount of times Vincenti finds himself on the bench when changes are made.

Bunney was wide left against leeds though and Hendo played through the middle.

Bunney is one of the rare players that stand about 6 foot odd tall and somehow seem to shrink to 5 foot when attempting to head a ball,Vincenti must give at least 3/4 inches to him and would out jump him every time, not just slagging Bunney off as I genuinely think hes a much bigger threat when playing to his feet,if he could get that jump right he'd take some stopping

The amount of times Bunney jumped and completely missed the ball was frustrating to watch, given his height he should be making them. It illustrated how important Vincenti is to the team, however if Bunney had taken another touch when through on goal in the first half, it could have been a very different outcome, fine margins.

Life is a game of fate.

Two poor games from cav i believe he should be dropped along side Lancashire who has dipped in form a bit recently and with Hogan out id take a risk with gray up top who will run three times as much as Donnelly. Done hasn't had the best two games and maybe put him on the left wing where he can run with the ball without being compromised.

I dont think we can afford to tinker too much with the team unless totally neccessary, if, it turns out O'Connell has picked up something, Id expect Eastham to partner Olly, I agree we should be moving Done up field, and put Rose back in defence.

Just get Hilly to ring his mate Flicker to ask him about how to have a good run at the end of the season.
