Presumably, he could have stayed at Fleetwood on his current terms for the rest of the season, and if so it's to his credit that he is prepared to drop a division, for a better prospect of playing regularly. |
| News Comment | Match Preview: Dale vs Newport at 21:14:20
One or two points of interest in the Newport preview: Newport go into Saturday's trip to Rochdale off the back of back-to-back wins, but have three new absentees for the game. Two comeback wins in succession, 3-2 at home to Sutton and 2-1 against Port Vale, also at Rodney Parade have County in good form and 4th in the table ahead of the trip to Spotland. County will be without striker Alex Fisher though who has tested positive for COVID on a Lateral Flow test and is awaiting the result of a PCR. Scot Bennett has an undisclosed injury that will keep him out as a precaution while Kevin Ellison has sustained facial injuries. Rochdale have been in a tough run of form recently and are without a win in six in all competitions and their latest league win came back on October 30 thanks to a 2-1 triumph at Barrow. Jimmy Keohane is the only absentee for the hosts though, with everyone else available for selection for Robbie Stockdale. Rochdale are currently 20th in the home table with 11 points from a possible 30 while County are 6th in the away table with 16 points from 11 games. County striker Dom Telford will be hoping to score in the ninth successive game for him with his 14 goals having him top of the League Two scoring charts while Rochdale's main man in-front of goal is Jake Beesley with seven. Newport have not won at Rochdale since 1977, but it is worth noting that the two teams have only met in Rochdale four times since then. The last meeting between the two sides was a 2-1 Newport win on the final day of the 2013-14 season with Aaron O'Connor and Kevin Feeley goals earning the comeback win after Rochdale took the lead in the first half. |

And yet the bookies offer only 6 to 4 on an Oxford win, and 4 to 1 on a Dale win - according to Soccerbase (which also states a 19.00, not a 19.45, kick off). |

Hopeful news! So it will be about the 4th league match of the season before fans can attend? And when do the fixtures normally come out - about six weeks before the start of the season? So maybe this year we'll see them around the beginning of August. |

"In 2017/178, John refereed three Dale matches, all of them ending in draws." A long season, that. |
| News Comment | Refwatch: Millwall v Dale at 09:33:51
Unmentioned is that he's averaged five cards a match. Hope he doesn't make a decision tomorrow to spoil things for Dale fans who'll have spent £60 or so to be in the New Den. |

Six more yellow cards on Tuesday. Last season, he produced 7 reds in 27 matches, so he looks overdue showing a red this season. A good day to rest Joe Rafferty? |

Miller and Saturday's Gavin Ward have both reffed 31 matches this season. Miller has shown one red card and Ward nine. He's also given 31 fewer yellow cards. |

So he averages one red card every three matches: maybe there'll be one today that would be a help to Dale. But as eight of the nine cards have been against away sides I rather hope there isn't. |

Clocked up another red on Saturday, sending off a Huddersfield player in the first half. He's not only sent off Donnelly at Accy - a couple of seasons ago he sent off Vincenti there, when he was playing for tomorrow's visitors. |

An online search shows quite a few criticisms of Mr T. (who does seem to find it hard to keep his cards in his pocket). He's even upset Neil Warnock: 'Every game we write a report on the ref. It is how we are supposed to get rid of our frustrations! I take this seriously and try to be constructive though my missus thinks I am absolutely daft. As she says, "They will never change." On Thursday I spent an hour of my life writing the report, it was a three-page essay full of advice for Mr Tierney. These are supposed to be confidential yet I know of cases where my criticisms have been passed on, which is bound to affect the referee when he next does a game with my team. This time I put at the end, "Please pass a copy on to him." Will it make any difference? The head of referees is Mike Riley who was exactly the same when he was a ref, so what do you think?' |

Thanks for responding, TVOS. Even in the Premiership, where high skill levels might be expected to be the norm, some refs are more card-happy than others. I don't really have an explanation, though it sometimes seems akin to those schoolteachers who keep order without often using punishments, and those who don't or can't. Anyway, let's hope Mr Martin has a good game tonight and if he does reach for a red it won't be to show it to a Dale player. |

Just to be picky, his last game was on Saturday, Fleetwood vs Doncaster (3 yellow cards making his total so far this season 32). What I do find interesting is that after reffing 74 matches in this and the previous two seasons, he's shown three red cards. Charles Breakspeare, in this season and last, in 35 matches has issued 15 reds. How do the powers-that-be, or anyone else, explain such variations? |

After last Saturday's match a Norwich supporter posted the following on the "Rate the Ref." forum: "Very poor. One of the worst performances at Carrow Road for a number of seasons. Failed to give a nailed on penalty to Birmingham after 10 mins, when Martin brought down Donaldson. Probably then realised his error and then to make things worse failed to give Norwich a penalty for a clear handball. 2 wrongs doesn't make a right. Then started dishing YC for very soft offences, without even trying to talk to players. Then the worst tackle of the match by Jerome wasn't carded. By the end of the match he seemed to have lost any confidence he had, the ball went out in his corner, and he hoped/expected the AR on the far side to give it from 70 yards away! Timewasting, he decided to start clamping down and encouraging the keeper with 2 minutes to go. Shame about the 30 minutes before." |

"Saturday actually sees the Walsall official make a return to the middle after six ..." What, after six months' absence"? If he is back today after a long break, let's hope he's on form. |
| News Comment | Against all odds at 21:52:00
Interesting. Of the 4 clubs relegated from L1, bury are reckoned to be by far unlikeliest to win the league. The odds against well-supported Plymouth look long, but maybe they are still expected to have financial problems. Can't see why Fleetwood are joint third favourites. I suppose the odds on promotion are about a quarter of those shown, and the shortest odds on relegation start with Accy, then Morecambe. |

And he's relatively sparing with cards: 69 yellow and 2 red in 24 matches. Also, 5 penalties awarded this season. |
