It is soul destroying because there is ZERO competition for him when he declares himself fit. That was the case before the window, but it is WRONG. JCS can fill in there because (when he can be arsed to be fit) he is a good footballer. A left back, however, he is not.
I am not scapegoating Paal; I think that he will be a good player for us, BUT every now and then everyone needs to be taken out of the firing line when things are not going right and the fact that our right and left backs HAVE to play when they are fit is a massive indictment of our clubs footballing policy.
...and Paal was nowhere near "player of the season" even when we were top in October. He's had a few good games, but that is all - a few. If the team starts collectively bucking up, I'd expect to see more from him - he fits in well at the moment because clearly he can do far, far better than he currently is... |
Fair enough but as you say JCS can play at left back so there’s clearly not ZERO competition at left back. It’s not ideal but I wouldn’t describe it as soul destroying. A sense of perspective is needed here.
Paal’s still adjusting to the Championship so it’s more important that he continues getting experience and plays himself back into form. I’m not sure what dropping him would achieve but I suppose it would be nice to have more competition for places but that’s the same across the team.
I thought Paal was one of our standout players in the early part of the season and I seem to recall one of the match reports on here describing him as a potential player of the season candidate at the time. I’d probably still have him in my top 3 for player of the season. But not much competition! |  | | |
