Saints Linked With Ex Premier League Central Defender Wednesday, 2nd Jan 2019 10:33 Saints are being reported as being interested in ex Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel along with West Ham United and Crystal Palace.
Saints need to shore up their defence that is for sure, put bluntly if they don't sign a central defender with the quality and experience to start marking players in the box then it will be another tough end to the season.
The name Martin Skrtel won't excite many and at 34 he is not a long term option, but Saints need a short term fix and fast and Skrtel might fir the bill.
He spent 8 years at Liverpool playing 242 games in the Premier League for them between 2008 & 2016 and is now at Fenerbahce wit his contract due to end in the summer.
That means he would be available cheaply and it is said that all three Premier clubs linked have spoken with his agent about a potential move in January.

"He would be available cheaply". I think that's the key. It reminds me of the Stephen Caulker signing. Our net spend over the last 3 years is lower than that of any other club in the Premier League. We have made a profit in the transfer market so you have to ask where all the hundreds of millions we, like other Premier League clubs, get from TV, tickets, sponsorship etc is going. What we are witnessing with the lack of investment from the owners and decline in strength of our squad is the inevitable law of diminishing returns, from van Dijk to Skrtel. Sadly, even the money we have spent over the last 3 years has largely been wasted on poor quality players, not good enough for the Premier League. On the plus side, the sacking of Les Reed has seen us make the first sensible managerial appointment for years. But, Ralph has a hell of a job on his hands, strengthening the squad using only money from the sale of players Les paid too much for.

Meanwhile, the central defender we could build our team around for years to come, like we did with Fonte, is out there and he wouldn't cost much more than Skrtel. His name is Dael Fry. and he's the first player we should buy this month.

Not sure he has the experience this is his first year of first team football really

Agreed Nick, a massive risk trying to get Dael Fry to become a Premiership player overnight. I appreciate what you're saying dirk_doone but surely we need proven quality and experience right now? That said I'm sure RH has suitable signings on his radar, not sure Skrtel would be on the list though.

I dont think Boro would let him go at the moment given their promotion push, if they dont go up then perhaps he would be a good option in the summer to look at. Personally I would go for Ben Gibson, hasnt had a look in at Burnley sitting on the bench week in week out

Our club has become an embarrassment. This reminds me of when we got relegated with Harry Redknapp and Lowe gave him £90,000 to spend in the January window. Where has all the money gone?

My memories of Martin Skrtel are of a tough, uncompromising defender who had his own interpretation of the phrase " head to head ", and who followed the 1970's Leeds United motto ....." if you can't get the ball , get the man who's got it ". He had long list of bookings, and some not-so-occasional red cards, in short .."an animal" He would even make Dejan Lovren look like a real footballer. . In short - exactly the sort of player we need just now. Sign him ASAP. At 34 he won't get a 3 year contract, but if he can keep us up - he'll be worth the money.

Silly season here again. Some Loon will suggest Gibson again, it happens every window

Some funny suggestions on here, like: "Yes, lets go get someone else who's prone to red and yellow cards" (When you can tell we're sailing quite close to Excrement Creek. Think it through, guys)

This is very educational content and written well for a change. It's nice to see that some people still understand how to write a quality post. https://web-cart.com/about-us/

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Peterborough United Polls |
