As gig prices have dramatically increased, and the circle of people who attend live music has expanded, it creates an interesting tension between audience and artist.
When I was like 21 in my first job, me and one other bloke in the other went to gigs. Everyone thought we were weird. They usually cost about £7-20 and you got what you got, then decided if it was good.
Now everyone and their mum goes, and they cost £90 and they want to be entertained, fair, it's expensive, but the latitude for an artist to experiment, and given streaming pays them peanuts so they need to gig to pay the bills, is rapidly diminished.
I don't have a solution but it's an interesting dynamic as music turns fully from something that could challenge into something you demand fits your desires |

I dunno, I haven't seen lots of evidence that suddenly he's going to kick into life. But then he makes it very hard to defend him. Some guy behind me on saturday was berating him for "being on the wing" when pulling wide in the box for the 1-2 with Smyth (rather than staying marked by 3 men). I said he wasn't on the wing, he was trying to make space. "He's shit mate, you're an idiot". Well, both true, but accuracy matters. Then he missed the penalty about 5 minutes later.
He's has that worrying knack of being a second behind good. And as the sample size grows, it could just well be that's what he in fact is |

I think it was pretty telling of the guy that he had to fill in at left back and has probably been the best player we've had there all season.
I know our issues are deep rooted and systemic, but it is hard to think we'd be where we are if we had a 433 with Saito, Frey and Dembele all season |

I think it's time to tell my Ben Williams story.
A good pal of mine is a cycling journo who was doing an interview with Williams after he'd been here a few month and I felt was starting to have an effect with a squad that for my money was often pretending to be injured.
My mate asked me what I thought about the job he'd done so far. I said that whilst I didn't know the full ins and outs, he did seem to be having an effect. I ended with "Hope he keeps telling the c**ts what's what".
My mate then forwarded that message, unredacted, to Williams.
He replied "Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep trying to drive incremental improvement" |
