Good article Pat. A balanced view with a few intriguing little titbits of information. I see that you have been taking spelling and typing lessons from Nick though.... ;) |
| News Comment | Adkins Calls On Supporters. at 17:23:49
Good article Nick. The crowd really can make a difference by encouraging the team, even when two goals down as on Saturday and not getting on the players backs if they make mistakes. |
| News Comment | Saints Six Out Of Contract In Summer at 13:04:06
Keep Butterfield and Martin. Gobern possibly. Jaidi has been a rock for us this season, but father time is catching up with him. If in the Championship he just would not cope, but in the First Division he might just have one more season. Harding is good going forward, but can't defend. About the only other positive is that the team look well balanced with him. |
| News Comment | A Weekend Of Watching And Waiting at 20:46:19
I can't see any mention of MKDons, or Bournemouth there. They are far from out of it yet. Still, I think 2nd place is very much within reach. |
| News Comment | Saints V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict at 15:36:12
Actually, I enjoyed the game. For the first time in God knows how long we looked solid and organised. At no time did I feel that Wednesday posed any sort of threat. It was just down to waiting until we unlocked their defence. Once we did that, it was game over. Did anyone else notice Kelvin coming out and calling for the ball!!! At one point, in the second half he came and called and Fonte ducked - just in time. We seem to be playing like a proper team at last - and there is still room for improvement. |
| News Comment | Saints At Colchester The Verdict at 18:38:59
Good, interesting report Nick, typos and all! I think we are all in agreement about Martin. Hopefully we will see a bit more of him now. |
| News Comment | Saints At Peterborough The Verdict at 21:21:33
I am beginning to wonder if Seabourne looks worse because of the confusion and indecision that Davis is now causing with his defence. This is almost as bad as when Baird used to lose his rag with Davis on a regular basis. Certainly watching the last couple of matches on TV I was certainly happier and felt more relaxed with Bart in goal, even though I think that Davis is the better keeper. The conundrum seems to be does Adkins rest Davis and put potentially a worse keeper in the team? |
| News Comment | Saints At Exeter The Verdict at 11:57:30
Interesting report Nick. The substitution of N'Guessan was strange at the time, but according to Adkins was purely down to strategy. He wanted to counter Exeter by "narrowing" the game which was why he put Hammond on for N'Guessan. It worked, so I guess he was right. Still, it was encouraging to see a player that I went "Who, why?" when he was signed, play so well. |
| News Comment | Saints At Oldham The Verdict at 08:19:05
Is it coincidence that we have started to hit a rich vein of form since Lambert started to play well again? I think not. Incidentally, I cannot resist pointing out that you should not be helping the rest of Division 1 by telling them that the secret of Saints success was the strength of the tea ...... ;) |
| News Comment | Saints V Exeter The Verdict at 10:29:45
Agree with all your report Nick, save for the bit about Lambert. I thought his movement was much more fluid than it was before the bad weather set in, so I guess that the break has done him some good. I noticed he was sitting a lot deeper for a large part of the game, but he was getting involved in everything. Maybe that is what he has been told to do. Last season our tactics seemed to revolve around hitting it up to Lambert and letting him get on with it (an over simplification I know). This season Adkins seems to be getting everyone involved and that seems to have paid off in the last two matches. Let's see what today brings. |
| News Comment | Forgotten Heroes - Peter Wells at 17:55:41
Enjoyed that piece Nick. I have fond memories of him, as he played the vast majority of the games during my early Saints supporting career. Although Ian Turner was goalie when I first started watching Saints, it is Wells that I remember most. |
| News Comment | Saints V Brentford The Verdict at 18:59:01
I don't always agree with you Nick, but this time I do. I am a fan of Adkins, but he failed this time, just as the players so spectacularly failed. Second best to everything indeed. Very, very disappointing and disheartening. |
| News Comment | Saturday's Attendance Was Poor at 20:40:31
I didn't go because I didn't either want, or felt that I needed to. Everyone who went are clearly better fans than I am. Unless they live in/around Southampton and it was a choice between shopping, or football. This season the League is all. Cups are a distraction. Finally, I am fed up with endless droning on about attendances. FACT! |
| News Comment | Adkins Is Right at 17:18:58
It was noticeable in Adkins post match interview after the Daggers game that, even though we had won 4-0, he was furious with the team. I think that Puncheon being moved on sets down a marker to the rest of them. Why on earth can we not defend corners properly? The is clearly down to a lack of concentration by just one, or two players. That was clearly an issue at Carlisle and not for the first time in a game by along chalk. In concert with the failings of the central defenders is the abject failure of Lambert to score from open play. Several have commented on Lambert's baffling inability to jump at all this season. He looks as mobile as a log, but give him a penalty to take and he looks his old confident self. I look forward to an improved performance on Saturday. |
| News Comment | The Loan Arranger at 09:20:04
Are you overlooking that Fish was the one player Adkins knew about before he came here, using him successfully in his Scunthorpe team. I wonder if Mills is being schooled in the Championship in preparation for next season when we will need all the experience of life at that level if we get promoted? |
| News Comment | Saints V Dagenham & Redbridge The Verdict at 09:54:30
How I saw it as well. Thought Chaplow made the difference in midfield. Still felt that the defence haven't got to grips with zonal marking. On the rare occasion they got in amongst us there was a definite air of panic. Maybe that was what Adkins was so clearly angry about in his post match interview? |
| News Comment | Saints At Notts County The Preview at 22:52:45
"in the past when we were a Premier league club we sent our youngsters to league 1 clubs to get that grounding" Good point well made, but you still need to be cautious with youngsters for physical development reasons as much as anything else. |
| News Comment | Saints V Oldham The Verdict at 20:46:29
I have a number of issues with this report, not least of which it is disrespectful of an Oldham team which played in the style of their manager, Paul Dickov. I thought they played to their strengths, they were in our faces from the word go. Their move which led to their goal (and started just in front of me) was superb. The winger picked it up looked up and called out. As he did that, at least four, maybe five players suddenly picked up speed and all ran in different directions. It was clearly something they had worked on. It had it's desired result and created uncertainty in the defence. The passing was crisp and with purpose. The goal seemed almost inevitable. Talking of our defence, it seems to me that Seabourne is the weak link. I am just not convinced by him. Fonte and young Aaron Martin seem to be a better balance IMHO. As for the rest of the first half, we were fighting, without a huge amount of success, to get back into the game. Our goal when it came, was extremely well worked between Lallana and Fonte. Right at the most psychologically damaging time, just before half time. I thought all three of the subs (sorry, "impact players") were spot on and swung the game our way. Chamberlain was magnificent and we ought to wrap the kid in cotton wool. The run from the halfway line, which resulted in him hitting the post, deserved the standing ovation it was given. Barnard was very effective and seemed to link up well with Chamberlain. I loved the attempted throw in he "attempted", before passing the ball on. Wotton did what he does well, a spoiler to break things up. 3 points. Job done. |
| News Comment | Saints At Huddersfield The Verdict at 20:29:36
This is where Adkins will earn his corn. I am confident he will not bottle the difficult decisions, as he has said several times that we HAVE to gain promotion this season. I predict an uncomfortable few days for the players. I agree with all that Nick says, the only thing that would really stun me would be to see Bart in goal on Saturday! |
