Morgan Schneiderlin Draws Titanic Comparisons.
at 19:08:21

I feel for Morgan. Not for what he earns but unlike his new club which I loathe, I want him to be a success.
I'm sure he joined them because of the money and because he thought United had a far better chance of winning something than the Saints. Realistically that is probably still the case. What he won't have counted on is being on the bench particularly when so many other players are out.
What he is likely to be most concerned about is his international prospects.
He was breaking into the French team when he was with us and his chances for the Euros must be diminishing by the day.
A real shame because we miss his combination of defensive qualities and his range of passing. No one in the current squad offers that.

Saints Chairman Reveals Things Are Moving Fast In Search For New Manager
at 19:28:29

I am amazed at some of the vitriol aimed at the Board on this and other sites following the loss of MP. I am disappointed to see him go as he did a great job at St Mary’s. But I was more upset at the time when Adkins was sacked and before that Pardew.
MP obviously wanted to go. He must see it as a great opportunity which sometimes you only get offered once in your career. If reports are correct and he has paid to Saints the equivalent of a year’s salary then he must have really wanted the Spurs job. Good luck to him – I hope he does well except for games against the Saints.
I have been supporting Saints for over 50 years and whilst it is good to have ambitions they have to be tempered by what is realistic. Everton could not keep Moyes, Arsenal could not keep Van Persie and Spurs had to let Bale go. Contracts unfortunately are meaningless in football if someone wants to leave.
I think finishing eighth was a fantastic achievement and it could have been even better. We let a lot of leads slip. But even under MP we were not assured of eighth or better next season even if we kept all our players and strengthened a bit. Look at Swansea, West Brom and Newcastle over recent seasons. We could be the same next season if we have a bad start.
Why should the Chairman throw multi millions at players transfers and wages. We very nearly went bust recently and I don’t want to be a hostage to fortune again. Look at our friends down the road. It only needs the rich benefactor to depart and you are stuffed. Saints and Champions league could happen long term but we ain’t going to overtake the current top seven any time soon. United won’t be as bad next year.
Being courteous to former players and the local rag is what I would expect from any decent business. Lets have faith in the board. As far as I can see they haven’t done much wrong yet.

Saints V Yeovil The Verdict
at 19:24:27

I agree that unfortunately Guly is not Premiership quality, at least not if we aspire to be a top half team. But it is not his fault or the other fringe players who are not quite up to it. The issue is are they giving 100%.
Bearing in mind the stick he gets from some fans, and there were some of them around me yesterday havng a go at him, I was impressed with the way he stepped up to take it when no-one else seemed to want to take the responsibility. It took real character and good luck to him.

West Ham United Reputably About To Bid For Rickie Lambert
at 20:16:25

I love Rickie and all he has done for us. But he has a major opportunity to go to a world cup. I doubt he even dreamed about it a couple of years ago. He needs to be playing regularly and scoring goals to have a chance of going.
I am not sure about Osvaldo but if he is not the answer we need to find it elsewhere. We also need to sort out what sort of strikers we want - a big target man or quick strikers who can feed off through balls from the likes of Ramirez and Lallana.
£8m would be great business for all concerned. But if we get it, we need to spend it wisely.

Do Saints Need Pressure To Thrive ?
at 20:24:49

We need to be realistic though. We have a Manager who has really got the team performing and a great youth set up that keeps bringing through quality players. But we are currently competing against the likes of Swansea and until recently West Brom for eighth spot.
We are not going to finish ahead of Man Utd. We don't have the strength or depth of squad - centre back, left back and goalie a case in point. That's nothing against those who have come in - they are either learning their trade or just doing their best.
Arsenal supporters moan about their lack of spending but Walcott and Ox Chamberlain have barely played this season and that is £20 million that they paid us in days gone by.
You can add Podowski to that. So we might have spent a lot in this transfer window but not relatively over the past few seasons when you look at the others. Yes we need to be ambitious and strive for a bit more than you can reasonably expect but competing with the millions of Man City, Chelsea et. al. on crowds of under 30,000 is not going to happen immediately.
Those with even medium term memories will remember all the changes of Manager we had in the mid to late 2000's. We need to build on what we have got and not get over excited and chop and change with every new manager coming in having different ideas and wanting his own players.
Yes and I am loving these times at St Mary's too!

Shearer Is Wrong ! Its Sixty Years Not Thirty !
at 20:06:13

Having watched the Saints from the late 50's as Nick has pointed out we have had some great players come up through the ranks.
We currently have Shaw, Ward-Prowse and Lallana plus Chambers and a load of other youngsters yet to make their mark. Apart from the time of Letiss, the Wallaces and Shearer I can't remember as much talent at one time particularly when you add in those we had to sell i.e. Bale, Walcott and Ox.
We shouldn't also forget the way we have signed young talent and developed it - Clyne, Schneiderlin and Rodriguez. That is critical to future success too.

Nigel Adkins A Thank You From The Fans
at 20:41:18

What the hell have we done. Where are the morals in football. A lot of the Saints Managers moving on you can excuse but the last parallel I can think of is the Saints treatment of Dave Jones.
So what if Adkins got us relegated - he probably stood a better chance of keeping us up than the new guy and without anyone in the squad who has hardly played in the Premiership before - a few games by Fox, Cork?, Chaplow, Davis and Davis what do you expect. I have been supporting the Saints since I was a boy - first game in 1957/58. We are a long way short of being a top half Premiership team. The way I feel tonight I don't really care if Saints do go down.If you treat people like that you deserve what you get

Saints V Arsenal The Verdict
at 12:29:19

Agree with much that has been said but must stick up for Boruc yesterday.

He has not endeared himself to the Saints crowd, me included, but after his shocking first 10 minutes his handling was superb. He had to field the Walcott shot which he dealt with comfortably - it could easily have squirmed away.

But what I liked was the way he commanded his area. At corners he made himself big (unlike SuperKelv) and caught a number of corners which Kelv would probably have left to his defenders. The confidence that gives defenders and the pressure it relieves should not be underestimated.

Whether he is the long term answer is another matter but like Guly we should give credit where its due.

The End Of The Beginning - Time To Get Things Right
at 20:53:02

I didn't expect anything from 3 out of the 4 games at the start of the season.
But the result against Arsenal was shocking, we should have got something against Wigan and we let leads slip against the two Manchester Clubs. That is a really bad start.
I really hope NA can turn it around. But don't pretend it will be easy. Reading who had an easy win at St Mary's last year are one of the worst teams in the division. And they have a point on the board.
Morale will be a major issue on Saturday. Lets hope the players aren't shell shocked and really turn in a performance.
Like others I am disappointed in our transfer dealings over the Summer. We seem to have signed players willy nilly. What is the plan for JRod and Mayuka? Why did Sharp go? It is difficult to understand the logic behind it all.
It seems we are danger of picking our best 11 players and not the best team. The side needs to have balance and it is a hard league. Can Ramires and Lallana play in the same struggling side?

Harry Redknapp The Only Man To Unite Saints & Pompey
at 14:23:51

Don't know what other teams supporters he mismanaged think of him but he was a disaster for Saints. He played Calum Davenport, who was responsible for a host of goals we conceded, instead of Danny Higginbottom and Kevin Phillips was never given a fair chance.

I was appalled when we lost to Man Utd at home and were relegated. A win that day could have kept us up and there was no spirit in the side whatsoever. After all the previous years when players like Benali and Letiss played their hearts out.

Perhaps he has finally got his come uppance - but I wouldn't bet against him bouncing back somewhere.

Peter Shilton Honoured
at 16:51:25

Sadly Campbell had just come back from a broken leg and was not the same player after that. He had been a key influence in us getting promoted to the First Division and was a keeper who really commanded his box. Still Shilts was special.
