My daddy was a diplomat
He never hurt nobody
He just loved to ride on planes
And eat Ferrero Rocher

Thanks for that, I saw Saarland had been in World Cup qualifiers in a book I had as a kid, but never realised they had beaten anyone. I checked straight away that the coach wasn't THE Helmut Schoen who won the World Cup in 1974...it wasn't.

Russian Nationalists have been sabtre-rattling about the need for a "Kaliningrad Corridor" through Poland or Lithuania, particularly since the invasion of Ukraine. Some local traditions die hard.

There's a fascinating collection of weird border stories here, infuriatingly without maps! https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20171210-europes-strange-border-anomaly

Here's an entry for Baarle-Hertog, the mosaic of Belgium and Holland.

At the end of the Napoleonic War, the Congress of Vienna couldn’t decide if a valuable zinc mine should be awarded to the Netherlands or Prussia, so it was agreed they would share it under joint rule as the territory of Neutral Moresnet. When Belgium was carved out of the Netherlands in 1830, it took over the Dutch claim. The mine was initially so prosperous that Neutral Moresnet became a tax haven, but it closed in 1885. Various schemes to exploit its extra territorial status and restore its prosperity included a casino and making it the global headquarters of Esperanto. It was seized by Germany in World War One then dissolved and awarded to Belgium by the Treaty of Versailles. It’s last surviving citizen died in 2020.

I certainly don’t know, but Impey was a volcano that could go off at any time, eg Coventry away.

We beat a superb Barnsley team three times that season, by a 9-4 aggregate. And still didn’t go up.

In the shop window, but not on the bench today. They’re 2-0 up in 10 minutes without him.

Such a great game, Impey losing his head too was funny in hindsight. After the game, a teenage boy who’d been sat along from us said it had been his first game and asked “Is it always this good?”

I saw the fifteen minutes he played for Cambridge against Bristol Rovers a few weeks ago and he certainly looked much leaner than I remembered, but he hardly got a touch. Monk has decided he doesn’t have the time to play him into any form.

Incidentally, George Thomas hasn’t played for them this season after tearing his ACL last spring so they won’t be shopping at Nourry’s again soon.

Slightly downgraded for Kerry to 90mph gusts, seemingly raised for everyone else.

100mph gusts in South Kerry. I don’t remember seeing any higher. Here’s hoping it’s not that bad.

And the other goals…

Terrific block by the Hull defender for Paal’s initial shot, he must have thought it was Preston all over again.
