Ashes: Test 1 10:36 - Jul 10 with 12137 viewsDaley_Lama

England win the toss and bat.

Finn chosen over Bresnan

Australia do a Darren Pattinson and select Ashton Agar in their team.

Or 215 even!

Do you have this week's lottery numbers as well?

Poor effort but we will see how they bat on this pitch.

Need to put that awful batting show behind us and show Australia why we have the best bowling attack in the world, especially now while it's overcast and nearing the end of play.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

Debatable I reckon, certainly only them as good as ours.

They don't really have a decent spin option, but their seam attack is top draw.

Finn's first over was poor, his first two deliveries got what they deserved but that's a big wicket.

Come on England.

Awful shot from Cowan but England have responded perfectly. Come on Finny, lets send Clarkey back!

Arrrgh. Can't believe I've got to leave this now. Somehow East Fife v Wolves doesn't have quite the same sheen.

Get in Jimmy. Swann to come on from the other end and snaffle Hughes before the close of play.

Fourteen wickets on the first day of any test match is utter bollox. What sort of a wicket is that? I don`t think they`d prepare that type of wicket for a County game,so why do it for the biggest test series in the game? Think there`s been a bit of lateral thinking here and only time will tell whether this obvious ploy will work, but as often happens in sport,it could end up biting England in the arse.

Too many players got themselves out though.

whilst not a shirt front it is certainly not a 14 wickets in a day track.

Look at the way England collapsed from Prior ( who needs a good talking too ) and the tail.

Application will win this match - sadly if you have a weekend ticket it might be going in the bin!!.

I would say that of the 14 wickets, none were due to the pitch and 14 were due to (a) good bowling (see Anderson to Clarke) and (b) poor shot selection (see Prior & Cowan for two such examples).

Any accusation of a 'ploy' is like Australia's early morning bowling - wide of the mark.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Add to that, the general nervousness of a first day in an Ashes series.

I doubt there were many complaints from those lucky enough to have tickets, and the main thing is, they'll be back to buy more in the future!

One of the opening days in the series against NZ was a very slow crawl - in this day and age, fans will be more likely to react badly to that type of showing, even when we achieved a positive result in the end.

Test cricket is what it is, and going back through the 130-odd years will show a shedload of opening days where wickets tumbled.

Traditionalists? Don't make me laugh!

PS: to Geoff Boycott - slagging off Steve Finn for bowling "rubbish" at the start of the over where he very nearly got a hat-trick just makes you look at right tit.
