Thinking about Mr Celar, who may be on the turn (but in a good way), I was thinking about Rs players who were booed/heckled/downvoted at the start and who did/didn't come good with us?
Martyn Busby Don Givens Mike Fillery Tony Sealy Dean Coney Mark Hateley Les Ferdinand Paul Furlong Jose Bosingwa Joey Barton
Any others come to mind? As I well know, and as Rene Girard has brilliantly analysed, the need to scapegoat certain humans is an inextricable part of (self-righteous) human being. As long as there are people, there'll be scapegoats.
Gavin Mahon had a bit of a rough time at one point I seem to remember. I wasn’t a massive fan of his but had a lot of respect for him the way he got on with his game and began turning in some decent performances.
Before my time but I’m told of a player called Alan Wilks who though scored 5 goals in a League Cup tie had the temerity to not be Rodney Marsh so got dog’s abuse.
Mike Keen was unpopular with sections of the crowd as the game was a bit huff and puff then and he wasn't like that. I don't remember Don Givens being a boo boy target except perhaps right at the end when he and others lost heart a bit.
It's interesting to think about the difference between players who turned it around and those who didn't/couldn't, like Ernie Howe or Zesh Rehman.
Then there are those who went from cheers to jeers - Charlie Austin comes sadly to mind!

Interesting thread Mr Elbow Mick Leach deserves a mention. Sad end, but actually scored a historic goal at Villa Park back in the day. And I was there!
Paul Furlong has to be the top of the list of those who turned it around. The Chelscum association put him on the back foot straight away; he’s openly admitted he thought he’d coast his career out and I recall he looked unfit and disinterested; to go from that and ear cupping at Notts County to then become a legend takes some doing. All credit Ollie and also gotta say Furs one of the nicest footballers I’ve spoken to.
Along same lines but total opposite - - - Boswanka. Started his club relationship badly and that was its peak.
Finally, point of order on Celar. He’s played something like 22 times for checking so far and his contribution, effort and entertainment across those has deserved the ire he’s had in my book. I don’t see him turning it around but by Christ I’d love him to. If he can attain anything like Furlongs rebirth then that would be the equivalent to a modern day miracle

Re Celar, I'm sure none of us saw those two superb goals at Cardiff coming. He was bloody unlucky v Watford too and almost won it for us at the death. Really hope he kicks on from here.

Micky Leach was biggest turnaround.
Used to get terrible abuse but just kept plugging away. Fans started to fully appreciate his contribution when despite being our best side ever, it often needed dragging up by its bootlaces and he was the man.
Recall he got the biggest testimonial attendance ever, it might well still stand, at the end of his career here.
Tragically died young but one of my favourite ever players.
Simon Barker used to get some horrendous abuse. What we could do with a player like him now
Yep. I remember he missed a penalty soon after he joined us, he got pelters from the crowd. But, he turned it around.
The only individual player I've booed was Tyler Roberts. Quite simply THE worst player I have ever seen in a Rangers shirt, and all down to his attitude, moaning and waving his arms at everyone else, yet barely moved. Can't even get in the Northampton team, but I think he may have picked up his annual Autumn calf injury. Just in time for Christmas.
Marty Phillips is quite a good example for me. Lots of talent with a seemingly can’t be bothered attitude is a recipe for disaster at Loftus Road. Was very good when he could be bothered/wasn’t injured. Also turned out a lot of dross for us too tbf but I thought some of the abuse was a little ott. I remember a non-rangers supporting mate who used to come to matches commenting about it.
Karl Henry kind of turned it round I guess. Left the club on fairly good terms with the fans i think after a shaky start.
Always remember my mum saying her favourite player was Micky Leach as she felt sorry for him due to all the stick he got from the fans .
Also named after Martyn Busby . When asked about it my dad would always say “not because he was any good , I just like the different spelling of his Christian name “ 🙈
Stefan Moore got a lot of stick. Never did turn it around.
I do remember him scoring a decent goal against Sheff Utd on the day of the alleged Paladini boardroom incident, which is what thankfully mostly sticks in my mind about him.

Yes I remember Furlong suffering chants of 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' for what felt like forever and then of course became a cult hero and remains part of the club to this day.
I think Celar has looked like a different player in the last few matches. Fans can boo and scream all they like but if you get behind a player like Celar, as we did eventually with Zamora, it could really turn around for him. There is a striker in there, he can drag players away in the box and he does have a surprising turn of pace. If the fans get behind him we could see a very different player and the asset we hoped he would be.
I don't recall Givens ever being booed. He scored in his first home game and carried on in the same vein. And he cost £40k. I do recall Frank Saul getting a lot of stick early on as a striker but becoming very popular when he converted to midfield. I can't understand why moronic peabrains boo our own players.

Givens stayed after the team broke up. He went through a rough patch but the stick was distinctly unfair given he’d been brilliant for us from when he signed.

It is revealing just where many of our recent players have ended up, isn't it? If you discount those like Eze, BOS and Manning who clearly had value, most of them seem to have fallen down the pyramid or even disappeared altogether (Kakay).

Got to admit that when I first started going to Rangers, he was my least favourite player, which as you say, seems crazy now as he scored goals and was a decent enough player. I think it was his resemblance to Les Dennis. I don't really know, Gerry.

I’m not sure about boos, but I remember Matt Phillips getting stick the same year he had the most assists in Europe.
