The divisive hip hop/rap thread. 15:10 - Jul 27 with 6776 viewsBluce_Ree

Right. Statistically, at least 50% of LFW hates rap and thinks it's some sort of bullshit where they're "just talking" but that's like your wife saying "it's just 22 men chasing a ball on a park" about football.

So, I'm starting this thread because basically I don't give a f**k about football until we're in relegation trouble.

If you think rappers have no skill or talent, try this.

Abdominal - Vicious Battle Raps

If you think rap is American pop bullshit, try this hard UK goodness.

Son of Noise - Adrenaline

If you think modern rap is rubbish.

Redman - 80 Barz.

If you want something amazing.

MF DOOM - Accordion.

Apologies Ned - meant to add to the thread not reply specifically to your post!

I’m a fan of some hip hop. Find the angrier stuff turns me off.
The mellower type, Common, de la soul, The Roots, Pharcyde, I enjoy.

Slightly off topic but I find it weird when people are sad and listen to sad music.
That would only make me worse!!

Suggested by my Mrs. Apparently the French language is the best for rap, don't know about that. No my thing but I don't mind listening to some now and again.

Ah Wu Tang Clan - greatest hip hop group of all my time in my very humble opinion. What an amount of talent to come out of Staten Island...Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, RZA, GZE, ODB, Inspectah Deck. Individually and collectively, some of the best hip hop ever produced.

Anyone seen the Wu Tang drama on Starz/Disney? It's actually very good and well worth a watch.

Love their Tiny Desks gig from a few years back

A teenage favourite of mine

Cannot look beyond the sheer genius of 2pac. It blows my mind he was killed at 25 when you look at the body of work he left behind, some of the deepest and most moving hip hop imho.

Shout out for Dave - His debut Psychodrama is one of the great UK rap records.

Rap has been going downhill since this came out at the beginning of 1981.

Rap starts at the 2 minute mark.

Good call re. The Pharcyde, "Bizarre Ride" is a brilliant album. Speaking of which:

British and a cracker:

Hard hitting and catchy. Warning: Contains guitars 🎸

With an honourable mention for this gem with its important moral message:

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

I guess the problem with it today is how broad it all is. Hip hop will mean different things to different people. You've got the original hip hop era, followed by gangsta rap, then Crunk & more commercialism....Then we split between UK and US....UK we get Grime, then start mixing in more Drum & bass, Basslines......End up at Trap. In the US they went through that weird phase of Trap and Mumble rap which completely lost me. But I dunno if I buy the Hip Hop was better in......arguments. Every era has good & bad, and the current era has some good artists. The standard for serious artists these days is pretty high. Certainly in the UK, people like Ocean Wisdom or Loyle Carner are clearly good enough to have been around in any era. And in the US I like Kendrick Lamar more than I've ever liked Jay Z or Nas (And I like both). I found the recent beef between Kendrick and Drake deeply satisfying as its finally proven something I've been saying for 10+ years, that Kendrick is on another level while Drake is wimpy music for simple people

I find a lot of the older stuff quite overrated, from Sugarhill Gang era through to Gangsta Rap era. And some of the post 00s stuff is underrated, presumably because everybody could see the commercialism by then. And the Crunk stuff was all a bit unrelatable for us Brits.

With so much other content to consume, mainly podcasts and audiobooks, I find myself listening to less music than ever recently. And when I do I'm going through a bit of an Indie phase atm (I mean for like, the last year now) - Need to get back on it

"Someone despises me. That's their problem." Marcus Aurelius
