Another failure by Drakeford's government. The number of Welsh speakers fell from 19% in 2011 to 17.8%. It fell in all areas of Wales except Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan, Merthyr and Rhondda. Even worst it fell in all areas in Wales for children despite many schools now only teaching in the Medium of Welsh. Make the recent decision by the FAW to try and rebrand the Nation team look like a sop to the minority.

According to statistics less young people speaking the language. 🤔

Considering the number of Welsh only speaking schools, that statistic is increible. Have Welsh people given up on the language or have the number of English speakers settling in Wales distorted the numbers. If its the later, it doesn't bode well if there was an Indie vote, IMO.

Some influence in the decline of Welsh speakers could be the influx from other parts of the UK .in 2010 the figures were that 20.8% of Welsh population was English-born and since Welsh labours announcement that , we (Wales) are now a Nation of Sanctuary them there's no surprise really in its demise. Blair did the same opened up our borders to capture votes and Drakeford seems to have followed the same path.

Think I said the other day, it's one thing teaching kids in Welsh. Them bothering to use it when not in education is another.
Making things mandatory is not the best way to endear people to them. By all means encourage learning Welsh. Forcing them to will have the opposite effect.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

In the modern world are children better off concentrating on another language instead of Welsh.

Undoubtedly yes.
Making Welsh mandatory instead of another language (Spanish is oddly overlooked in British schools considering nearly six times as many people speak it as a first language than French) has always been a backward and parochial approach.

Spanish was the language I was thinking as an alternative. Did I notice that you have connections with children's careers, if so you are better placed to judge than most.

More 18 year olds with no idea what to do now they've left school and largely linked to local labour markets.
My suggestion of Spanish was based largely on the numbers. If you've got a good grasp of English and Spanish then you've got a chance of being able to communicate with 2 billion people. Only a bit less with French.
Ironically if I was to suggest a language that will aid a career locally it would be Welsh, but that is almost entirely down to the sheer volume of Government type jobs where it can be a requirement rather than an actual need for Welsh speakers.

Could also be true that many better educated Welsh people, including Welsh speakers, have moved to England for the better job opportunities.
Drakeford government have announced the 2023/24 settlement for each of the 22 local Councils.
Unbelievable the three richest areas in Wales get the largest increase.
Monmouthshire 9.3% Cardiff 9% Vale of Glamorgan 8.9%
Average increase 7.9%
While the two poorest areas get the lowest increase. Rhondda Taf 6.6% Bleanau Gwent 6.5%
It's almost as if Rhondda and Blaenau can be relied upon to vote Labour no matter how much they get sh*t upon, whilst there's a chance that Monmouthshire, Cardiff and VoG could vote differently.

Spanish is my sons first choice, a line I have mentioned before and obviously gotten pelters for it from Kilkenny!
Drakeford says he wants a modern Wales but then keeps pushing policies that take us backwards.
Its up to voters to change things at the ballot box, they won't though, as we've seen over many years, change isn't coming anytime soon.
Drakers ain't dull he knows where his bread is buttered and until people in those deprived areas wake up and see they are being marginalised when it comes to funding nothing will change, we in Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot have a strong Labour faithful and with little opposition to Labour it will continue to be that way, the Tories and Plaid couldn't find their arses with both hands, meaning Labour will always hold all the aces.

I hope your son enjoys his Spanish. Good for him.
Its your read across from that which is bollox.
Equally …. my neighbour learning welsh does not mean every neighbour wants to learn welsh. In your head it would mean just that. Its a bollox argument.

He clearly doesn't understand the word modern then, anyone who has pulled the plug on the M4 improvements involving Brynglas Tunnels clearly hasn't a modern vision.

Why should they moan he's building them a nice new modern metro system , to feed more taxpayers money into the ever evolving , ever absorbing capitol

Was up there Saturday, amazingly busy, still lots and lots of money being spent there buildings going up, no seats available on train either stood all the way same as I did last time we went up, Mrs did have a seat though so not to bad I suppose.
Luckily we went to station earlier than we intended, cause they cancelled the train we intended to catch.
