Bowie. High Teachings From beyond.. 15:20 - Jun 15 with 11200 viewsDiscodroids

I was sitting in work the other day waiting for the comet halle Bopp to end my bored shitless torment when some bloke i work with, made a round of tea's and this young lad on work experience said 'Awesome' when he was handed the Mug.

He also uses the words , without fear nor favour, 'Sheesh', 'Dumb', Hi', and most unbelievably, 'Sucks'. A lot.

I was about to launch into a blitzkreig rant about Landing on the sea of fecundity in a tin foil space probe being 'awesome', Kubricks '2001' is 'awesome' , Franz Shuberts 'Trio In E flat' is ' awesome'. Dennis Hopper is 'Awesome'. Your very first ecstasy tablet charging through your soul cast from gods fourth rib, Is 'Awesome'... not some thin boned calcium deficent twot in a Average white band t shirt harnessing the power of mixing boiling water, a tea bag, and semi skinned in a Spurs Mug.

What stopped me from my middle aged rampage was the sight of this kids bag, With a dog eared , well worn , and Loved, copy of Bowies' Diamond Dogs' Lp, Sticking out .

Never judge a book by it's Cover you old Git.

Whether you mix Denture-grip eucryl toothpowder into your Horlicks or mainline uncut Peroni into your celiac trunk. Whether you're old enough to remember Bodie's vanderbilt  stonewash or  the Frank Ross Donegal Weave Chalk Stripe bloodlust wrath across south London , or young enough to understand Tik Tok and use Whatsapp,  Bowie is the Omega Man for all generations.

An Event Horizon of Glam, Prog, Rock, New Wave, Funk, Soul,  Berlin School and Polarity Drive Musical Brilliance.

Post your Favourite Bowie Tracks as we Bathe and tarry awhile in the plasma pool of his greatness. Why Not?, we've f uck all else to do in the off season, Unless you want to talk about the falkland Islands and Monkey Pox.

Just my age, DD. 5 years older and I might have loved him, but he was yesterday’s man 43 years ago with Let’s Dance, Dancing In The Streets and Tin Machine still to come.

My greatest musical influencer, long before being an 'influencer' was a thing. Once fancied a girl until she claimed to be more into Jagger than Bowie and killed the interest there and then (how was I to know they would later collaborate just for a little outdoor boogie?) Favourite - incredibly tough call, but going with 'Sorrow'

If you don't like this track then your strange.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Way to influential to be dismissed so brazenly. I can overlook the laughing gnome moments for the highs.

Point taken, mr Sheen. I ignore Bowies 'Tin Machine' offerings like i do Gary Websters 'Minder ' Episodes. Although The thin white duke produced some decent tunage in his later years...
the 'Ashes to ashes' Drop at 2 mins.....

Great tune. Reminds me of my late old Dad, 'East Ham Dave'. He'd sing that after a few double diamonds using a plastic comb as a harmonica. Daft sod.

Funnily enough, an early date with the future Mrs Sheen was seeing Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. When she admitted afterwards that she had hated it, I knew I was onto something.

Thanks for that giggle Disco.

You know, it's funny. I was never a very big Bowie fan back in the day but, out of so much 60s and 70s music I avidly devoured as a young man, Hunky Dory and Spiders are among the few albums I still listen to from that time. Both are masterpieces. This remains Bowie's most enigmatic composition that brings back many of the feelings of those weird and wonderful days...

First heard this in my young formative days as a Mod. Always always stuck with me.

Think that Secret Affair did a track called Glory Boys which was a sort of reprise/homage. The Jam likewise did a record called London Girls which was definitely an updated Jam reworking of the same theme.

Anyway, all praise the Thin White Duke. Simply a genius.

Never knowingly understood

For me, a lot of Bowie still cuts the mustard after all these years. This is timeless

I was in that age bracket too I think - which always reminds me of the lines in this Malcolm Middleton song, a man who clearly also fell victim to the red shoes problem:

For those who can't be arsed listening to it, at 2mins 30 he says:

'Hey, I'm sorry you're dead, and I'm sorry that I missed Bowie's changes. I stumbled upon him dancing with his red shoes on and dismissed him as a c*nt. Dancing to thought forms made true when he turned the world from black and white.

Anyway this red shoes contagion dissuaded, or at least delayed, probably millions of us from delving into his other stuff. Stuff like this bit of acoustic venom which I didn't finally discover till I was about 31:

One of his finest to sign off with. He really does deserve the sobriquet, musical genius.

The grass is always greener.

On the day Bowie died I had an appointment with a client - an older guy from Beckenham. He told me he grew up with and went to school in Beckenham with Bowie who he liked a lot.

He said Bowies family were not that attentive to him as a kid but an Irish landlady of the Three Tuns Pub in Beckenham took him under her wing and was like a surrogate mum. He later rehearsed in there with early bands in a spare room upstairs.

Some years later he was now an adult having a pint in there one lunchtime when Bowie came in with Angie to see the same landlady and tell her they were going to Bromley registry office to get married. My guy said let me buy you your final drink David as a single man and did.

He said Bowie stayed in touch with all his schoolmates all down the years and came back for a final private trip round his old haunts a few months before he passed away.

The Three Tuns was the pub I had a final drink in 20 minutes before my own wedding- sadly a pizza joint now which trades off the Bowie connection quite a bit.

Soul tunes ruled my young life but mate used to play this song non stop.

Grew to admire this so much, lyrics are excellent.

t's a God-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling, "No! "
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on.
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man!
Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man!
Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man!
Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man!
Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Truely LFW, we are caught up in the rapture of the high Dojo Bowie.

Cast Politics into the Abyss on this Forum... Bowies Music is some artefact of a higher dimension that we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we can't understand it.

Fu ck knows, Iv'e had 6 pints of Camden Hells...
