It’s a mix (cocktail) of monoclonal antibodies targeting the virus that act in the same way as antibodies elicited by vaccination. It works by exactly repeating what the vaccine elicited antibodies do. But without memory or complementary T cell activity. At about 20-50 times the cost. An important therapy for those who cannot be effectively vaccinated which is what NICE has recommended.

How much longer? on 18:02 - Dec 8 by Flynnidine_Zidownes | On the last point I did read with some interest recently that they have made great progress in creating a vaccine for children to protect against malaria in sub Saharan Africa. I spent a fair bit of time in west Africa and the suffering it causes is beyond anything we can imagine sitting here in our warm homes. If they can get that rolled out it would be one of the finest achievements in medicine to date. |
Malaria in Africa is horrific-seen its effects in Malawi. It is promising news but efficacy was below 40%. Nevertheless that’s hundreds of thousands protected

Except you can't give the vaccine to save someone's life when they are in hospital dying of COVID. So they are no where near the same are they. Completely different objectives.

Ok. This is plain stupidity on your part. All Regeneron does is reproduce part of the protection of vaccination. It is less effective than any of the vaccines at at over a grand a pop hardly good value when the vaccine stops you getting sick. Notably a lot of its use is on the selfish unvaccinated folk in the US. I fully support its use as NICE recommend. I am less keen on my tax supporting it’s use in the selfish It also has a higher risk of adverse events. If you think it’s a good frontline option, You are exceedingly stupid. Why wait until you are Ill when there is a better option.

Because the person lying dying in hospital has already had 2 lots of vaccinations. You are totally Unvaccinated centric aren't you? It is as if you are in denial that thousands of vaccinated have and are dying. That is where the medication comes in whether vaxxed or unvaxxed.

Numerous sources state the Delta variant was first identified in October 2020, articles also state The first "Delta wave" became apparent during the second surge of COVID-19 infections in India, in early February cases started increasing from 10,000 to a peak f over 400,000 by early May. where it first Daily cases skyrocketed from roughly 10,000 in early February to a peak of 414,000 in May. The Delta wave hit India as its vaccination campaign was still in its infancy; only 4% of Indians had received a first dose.

No Not at all. To be classed fully vaccinated in hospital you must be 14 days after 3rd jab or 14 days & < 6 months of 2nd jab. Everyone else is classed as unjabbed. Awake yet

You have no idea and are confusing me with Kilks here. As retirees you are not bearing the taxation costs of the pandemic and Brexit. I doubt you are noticing the spiralling costs of living. The huge struggles areas such as agriculture and hospitality are having without workers. These are not made up or Project Fear. Neither are there some of the bigger impacts in the financial sector as yet and these may or may not happen. So as suggested, and as I am doing let’s just get in with making the best of the situation which I have yet to see any benefit. It’s you that still has an issue.

Wow. You're relying on the Clinton News Network now? CNN is very much an outlier, and seems to have mistaken the origin of the virus with the early stages of the Delta wave. New Scientist is a well informed magazine, they aren't going to get the date a genomically sequenced variant was found, unless they are lying. All other media claims Delta originated before the end of 2020, vaccination began in India in January 2021. Lets look at the other variants of concern. Alpha - originated in the UK in Autumn 2020. Vaccination began in December 2020. Beta - originated in South Africa September 2020. Vaccination began in February 2021. Gamma - originatedin Brazil December 2020. Vaccination began in January 2021. There is no link between vaccination and variants. The only variant of concern to originate in a country that has started vaccination is Omicron. Which originated when about 80% of the population wasn't vaccinated. No variants have emerged in a highly vaccinated population. The vaccines are doing the job, lets get the world vaccinated asap.

How much longer? on 09:28 - Dec 8 by Professor | There are quite a few ways to produce vaccines-different types have different immunogenic properties and differing safety issues. The simplest are inactivated vaccines that produce mediocre antibody, need repeated shots but are simple to produce, though not that cheaply. The Chinese vaccine uses this principle. But to be frank it's rubbish. The others in the pipeline are subunit vaccines -just use part of the virus. These are generally very safe and can be cheap if a recombinant protein- put the viral gene in usually yeast and essentially grow in a large culture-we have a lot of experience in this from brewing. But they suffer from the same issues as inactivated vaccines, but can be used succesfully in vaccines like hepatitis B and are safe to use in immunocompromised people. The last option is a live attenuated vaccine-basically the virus with some parts inactivated which produce the best immunity, but always have a risk of become virulent again (reversion) and can't be used in immunocompromised individuals. Live coronavirus vaccines are pretty good in livestock like pigs and chickens. So we may get some new vaccines, but for many the whole idea is an anathema. Nothing new-been anti-vaxxers since Jenner in the 18th Century. The one thing I would always point out, is that most of the big infectious disease problems in the world are not vaccine preventable. That tells an important story. |
Thanks Professor. Personally for Covid I’ve no issue with taking a vaccine that solely induces a T cell response. I’m keen to avoid those that induce antibodies because I’m concerned about antigenic drift. I might be an outlier, but am encouraged to see that Emergex is conducting a trial for this type of vaccine.
