Makes you wonder what the DVLA management and workers are playing at. You would think they would make the clearing of the backlog applications a top priority. They should be working Saturdays and Sundays and put extra staff on getting these licences issued. Good job our NHS workers managed to work Saturday and Sundays to get vaccines out instead of pretending to work from home.

And who is ultimately in charge of the DVLA which is an executive agency of the Department for Transport, none other than Grant Shapps. If they want the DVLA staff to work weekends I’d have thought Grant Shapps will have to magic up the funding. I do agree with you about them clearing the backlog ASAP as it is a National priority. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

More good news the GDP for April to June rose by 5.5% up from the previous estimate of 4.8% . Hardly an indication of the country bring in a mess. GDP at the end of June was only 3.3% lower than the prepandemic level and with most restrictions ending in July is likely to have grown in the third quarter.

Yeah, cos while there’s fuel poverty, food shortages, cuts in UC and tax rises for the lowest paid I’m sure that an over-performing FTSE100 will be very comforting to folk.

Employment figures released today show a record number of people in work, more than before the pandemic, more than when we were in the EU, vacancies now 1,200,000. No excuses for anyone not to find work. Only two parts of the UK have lower Employment rates than before the pandemic, Scotland and London.

Brexit is working on 09:17 - Oct 12 with 906 views | majorraglan | I don’t think anyone can argue that Brexit has has been a resounding success, Boris is even looking to change the withdrawal agreement his negotiator made its the EU! Northern Ireland is and has been a sticking point for a long time, firstly there was Theresa May’s “backstop” then Boris came along and claimed there’d be no border, no extra paperwork etc etc, threw the Unionists under the bus and proceeded to sign an agreement which introduced the very things he’d claimed wouldn’t happen and he’s now trying to renegotiate the treaty again! The DUP have played Brexit very badly and are haemorrhaging support, they may finish 4th in next year’s elections which Sinn Fein are likely to win. Some of the food shortages are Covid related, but Brexit is also a factor. Our exports to the EU are subject of additional checks and paperwork, but imports are just rolling through unchecked ( because we don’t have the capability to carry out the checks) thereby putting our businesses at a disadvantage. Some sectors are seeing a shortage of workers and there are some good shortages. On the plus side some people are getting decent pay rises, but others aren’t getting anything and with inflation increasing they are worse off. What hasn’t helped is that for years our governments have failed to invest in critical infrastructure and we’re now paying the price. We knew there’d be bumps in the road - we have to hope they’re small !! [Post edited 12 Oct 2021 9:42]

Lots of small businesses collapsed. Self employed forced inside IR35. You really have no idea how numbers can be made to tell any story. Nothing is better now but at least it enables you to hide from the guilt and shame you should feel. I hope you can look your children in the eye when they ask why their future isn’t as good as your past.
