Newspaper report of our last cup win? 12:15 - Nov 25 with 4400 viewsDeepcutHoop

Doing some local genealogical research, and an adjacent story in one paper had this report from 2nd October 1897 of our national cup game against Wolverton. (who are ya, who are ya...)

It's a fascinating read, even if some of the language and terminology used by the reporters shows how far society has moved on!!

E Wallington OUT!

When they scored, E. Wallington was off the field, being 'surgically treated' after which he seemed to return and notch the equaliser.

Next time the ref signals the physio to come on to the field to attend to Sandro, perhaps we should also start prepping the dressing room for a little minor surgery.

Superb!

Apart from the old-time use of the N word, there are phrases there to savour:-

"Soccer"
"a capital game"
"a grand opening"
and - my favourite -
"plod along unceasingly"

You leave Incenzo alone.

That must have been one of his very first efforts.

The Society of Black Lawyers would have something to say about the fouling. However unlike the Sun and some of the other rags at least they had a reporter at the ground.
