Reg Jenkins David Cross Keith Welch Alan Reeves Gary Jones Neil Edwards Grant Holt Rickie Lambert (who'd have thought an ex Dale player would play for England in the World Cup in Brazil???) Scott Hogan Ian Henderson
I know I have included two goalies, but for many years we needed a decent goalie (and still do - sorry Josh)
Gary Jones Number 1. Lyndon Simmonds Steve Taylor Reg Jenkins Alan Reeves Mark Hilditch / Micky French ( toss up ) Craig Dawson Rickie Lambert Grant Holt
and a current legend ( in the making ) Ian Henderson
I nearly put spoonhead in my ten! Legend indeed! As for mickey french the only dale player in my formative years I remember scoring a hat trick for the dale. Took a few years for the next one if I remember.

Albert Whitehurst-on the basis of numbers alone Reg Jenkins Lyndon Simmonds John Bramhall - for 1986/7 alone Keith Welch - ditto Gary Jones - longevity of leadership Craig Dawson - so much promise. Seemingly lost to international football after his U21 career - well done Woy. Steve Taylor Steve Whitehall Neil Edwards

Too difficult this. All you can do is list the players that stick in your mind from your time watching the club. Not so much legends, but more talent.
On that basis:
Alan Reeves Andy Flounders Shaun Reid Steve Whitehall Alex Russell Jason Peake Neil Edwards Gary Jones Clive Platt Paul Connor Kevin Townson Paddy McCourt Paul Simpson (the player) Grant Holt Rickie Lambert Chris Dagnall Glenn Murray Adam LeFondre Chris O'Grady Craig Dawson Scott Hogan (Jack O'Connell)
Perhaps only a quarter of that list are legends in the truest sense, but, to me at least, they are legends because they provided my fondest memories watching Dale.
Anyone who missed out Stan Milburn, are obviously too young to have seen him.. The most profesional , outstanding player, that ever wore a Rochdale shirt... How he played in the 3rd division North, in those bygone days are unbelievable.. He would have graced any 1st division team back then..now called premier players..

Too young to remember him I'm afraid. Same with Reg Jenkins et al. Wish I could have seen all of them.

that opening spell of Paul Connor was probably the best spell I've ever seen of any player at the club. He was unplayable and it looked like he could have scored from anywhere. I think it took four games before I started getting worried that he'd be bought by another side given his performances.
Ultimately, it was probably as disappointing as it got for any player given the drop in form and the transfer fee involved.

That is very true, and the same could be said of the likes of Kevin Townson and Jamie Taylor etc.
I still remember Connor when we beat Carlisle by six. It seemed like he'd score wherever he received the ball. Great stuff.
Yeah Stan was a great player and a really humble man. I remember taking the mickey out of his old fashioned high sided boots when he came training with us at TBA. He took it all in good part saying " Listen son, I've never turned my ankle over in my career . You have your carpet slippers and I'll have my boots ". Stan and Big Reg, without doubt two of the best ever to play for the club.
Big Reg looked pretty handy at Rugby too when he played in the Hornets v Rochdale charity games they used to have in the old days. He'd have made a good goal kicking second row man.

Proper gentleman was Stan. I had the honour and privilege of meeting him a couple of times at the players reunion that the fighting fund used to help organise every year. It would be great if the club organised something similar these days. It was good to see the reunion for the centenary celebrations (a fat Lyndon Simmonds etc). I'm sure fans and the old players would love it.

An interesting point you make about Reg being able to play other sports.
His missus told me years ago he took up golf after he retired from Dale. I asked her if he was any good at it to which she replied along the lines of, "I'm not sure. After about six months of playing, he told me he was playing off 5".
Some people have all the luck!
To put that into perspective, to non-golfers, that implies if he'd taken up golf as a kid, he'd have competed in the majors.
It's difficult to name a team of legends but I would include Steve Taylor, Lyndon , Etc .
I have favourites who never really pulled up any trees but watching David Frain and Peter Farrell made me realise the importance of creative and skillful midfielders, I loved watching those two, fantastic players.
Then we had Jonah the workhorse, at times he carried the team on his back when we were really crap, a proper legend.

Shaun Reid did that too. Memorable player. His performance in the second leg of the AWS Northern Final against Carlisle was superb. Thanks to him, we almost (almost) pulled back a 4-1 deficit.

My Dale legends
Stan Milburn RayAspden Lyndon Simmonds Craig Dawson Gary Jones Rickie Lambert Neil Edwards Grant Holt Steve Melledew
Paddy McCourt
Other players who I remember with some affection would include George Morton Jimmy Thompson Dougie Wragg Eddie Wainwright-mainly for the fact he would come out of the tunnel finishing a ciggie which he would discard as he crossed the white line
Reg Jenkins

I remember that night like it was yesterday - Paul Connor was fantastic when he joined us, it's a pity he got injured and lost form. I also remember the Carlisle fans being very vocal that night!

I can't call this guy a legend because he only played for one full season. If he had have stayed in the game he would have become a legend. Graham Cunliffe.
He retired in his prime to run a paper shop ! How times have changed.
