How much are we missing Joey Barton? 19:12 - Oct 6 with 9093 viewsBilly_Kershaw

Given our atrocious start, how much do people feel we have been missing Barton in the last few games? Considering he has been so widely praised for his attitude, presence and team-building qualities last season, would we be bottom if Joey had been available?

Well as expected that generated some healthy debate, you can guarantee Barton divides opinion like no other.

Barton did play in the Spuds game where we were still experimenting with 3-5-2 , that was a total disaster and we were 3-0 down by half time. That system relies on having three young quick centre backs to cover for each other, Rio was a great player and both he and Dunne were shown up for being far too slow, felt a bit sorry for Dunne he was hung out to dry.

When you analyse our midfield options it's difficult to see why he isn't first choice, who out of Sandro, Fer, Mutch or Henry should be picked in front of him. None of those players have looked first choice so far this season, I'm genuinely hoping that we still have the best to see in Mutch and that Fer can give more of a commited performance similar to the Sunderland game.
If they are fit I hope we switch back to the Barton, Mutch and Fer midfield for the Liverpool game, it has potential and I'm not convinced Sandro will ever recover his form from his Spurs days which is why we paid the stupid 6-10 million for him.

I certainly don't think Barton will make us a completely different team I'm not that naive but he will bring commitment and leadership which is massively missing. As for the free kicks he has had some success but Krancjar has so far shown him a masterclass and hopefully he will always take them if he's on the pitch. There's no question Bartons dead ball delivery needs improving its a part of his game he should have perfected by now.

As for the Sandro comment well I still think he will prove a waste of money when we could have got Diame for a fraction of the price and he would have been fit and hit the ground running. Karl Henry when he has played so far this year has looked better than last year which is truly amazing I genuinely thought he had come to us to hang up his boots.

Look I'm no Barton fan by any means, the bloke on a personal level is a complete arse but on the football field he's my first choice as a leader and will at least give us some drive and commitment. The bollocks he comes out with on Twitter I just ignore, to be honest Twitter has caused our club more harm than good.

From what I've seen of henry this season he should be first name on the team sheet.
Then Austin, kranjcar then who knows?

'There's no question Bartons dead ball delivery needs improving its a part of his game he should have perfected by now.'

You mean we are paying someone £50k + a week, who as a seasoned professional hasn't perfected the art of a dead ball kick, yet when on the pitch takes ninety odd percent of our free kicks that are within striking distance of the goal....yep that makes sense.

Must instill so much confidence in your team mates that your captain has the capicity to not hit a barn door from twenty paces but he has got commitment ? verve? drive? all these will turn things around absolutely nothing, how can you respect an ars* like Barton, his off the pitch antics are very much part & parcel of his football life, a very very average footballer who has found the media more than happy to soak up most of the bollox he sprouts off it, a smoke screen for his lack of skills, even more under scrutiny, now back in the Prem.

Good captains do not have the need to shout & scream at their team mates, their presence on the pitch alone should breed confidence, even if not the most skilfull in the team, they should have a good command of the game, they should have something about them that the other players respect, they will want to put in that extra ounce of effort, they should bring a calmness when under the cosh, encourage, cajole a bit, if a player is not putting in the right amount of effort, but no way berate, that can wait until half or full time, very much one for things need to be sorted in the dressing room, not on the pitch or in public.

Our players seem at times completely at odds with many other teams, Barton is not some mythical being that will make one iota of difference, in the Championship the level is that much lower a lot of the time, you can get away with a low skill level, hence Barton shone a bit at times, now back in with the big boys in the games he has played been well and truly found out, if you had to take a player that does make a difference when he's missing it is Austin, definetly at the Championship level and not really had the opportunitys to show just how good he is yet at this level, did score a beauty the other week so hope is high more to come, once that is our club rids itself of HR and his cronies, Barton and a few others who are lowly skilled, and lucky to be earning a handsome salary for a job where their talents are minimal in helping the club reach a competitive level both on and off the pitch.

FWIW Wood - there's a hell of a lot of content there and you've obviously thought long and hard but we have to agree to disagree.

You obviously hate Barton with a real passion, I know he's an easy person to hate but As far as his football ability is concerned I rate him better than you do - that's life.

He played well against Hull at home where we should have got at least a point and probably would have done if Rio hadn't lost concentration and Charlie had converted the lucky penalty. He had a good game against Sunderland which we won , admittedly played poor at Spuds but the whole team was a disaster with 3-5-2 formation

I wish he would shut his "gob" off the pitch but imo he's the best we have in central midfield and leads by example on the pitch, well his disciplinary record has improved over the last 12 months.
I know he can be an accident waiting to happen but with our current 25 he is sorely missed as the recent displays have shown

I think we've missed him a lot.

That said, we'd still have no full backs or strikers and Joey is slow and it's our chronic lack of pace and energy that's the biggest killer, so i still think we'd be in deep sh!t.

Redknapp has assembled a poor side.

Perhaps Hoddle will say to him what he's supposed to have said to Beckham: 'That's not how you take a free kick son'.

As one of the dinasours of the board I did a quick search on what FWIW meant, an opinion is always worthy, even those that are against what I may think, as you say 'thats life'

A correction, I do not despise Barton, I do despise the fact there are many many con men in the game, he's one of them and he plays for us, not all entirely his fault, that starts at the top of the game, got even worse as the billions have flowed into the sport and he is just one of the products.
