I re-watched this a little while back and one thing that struck me was how unfairly we had a goal disallowed before half-time for a non-existent offside. And then the second half performance including the brilliant Gregory chip... I remember the game away at Luton two weeks previously that Glenn Roeder was sent off meaning he would miss the replay.... what an awful cesspool Kenilworth Rd was... always hated Luton after that
There have been some really great Sports documentaries in recent years and this is up there with them. As someone said above, I would love to see our own "Four Year Plan" as a Netflix documentary. I hate Basketball and loved the Last Dance. Would also highly recommend Sunderland till I die (both seasons). The Test on Amazon Prime (Australian cricket team post-sandpaper); The Edge about the English cricket team and how so many players suffered mental health issues. Looking forward to seeing the Armstrong documentary. Read his book just before he admitted to doing drugs and then read the book of one his teammates that told all. In a way MJ reminded me a little of Armstrong with that win at all costs mentality, but I think to be a real winner in professional sports you have that selfish drive that can sometimes cross the line.
As an 8 year-old, the Cup Final season is my first real football memory... Almost 40 years later I can still repeat the Match of the Day commentary when the goal went in off his knee and take great pride when, with about 10 minutes remaining, there is a chant of "Rangers..." and Motson says "and the Rangers fans are really roaring them home" and I am still convinced to this day that me, my Dad and his two brothers started that chant.... Who knows what would have been if he hadn't got injured so early in the Cup Final (or if the goal in the replay wouldn't have been ruled out for a phantom offside). Of course the interview reminded me of some other aspects of football in the 80s - when CA scored the winner against Palace in the cup and then celebrated in front of their fans and at the end the Palace supporters invaded the pitch and started charging towards us in Ellerslie Road I was scared out of my wits...
What I was saying is that like Langer in the article I quoted, he would have been desperate to come out to bat in the 2nd innings and if the game was on the line, would they have stopped him from coming out? This takes away the possibility of someone doing something seiously detrimental to their long term health.
You are comparing apples and oranges. Concussion is literally life or death changing, a torn muscle is an inconvenience. In all sports authorities are finally taking brain injuries seriously and if they had only allowed a traditional 12th man, Smith would have come out to bat with potentially fatal consequences to his long-term health. This article from the Guardian this morning sums it up pretty well with regards a concussion that Justin Langer had in 2006 in SA. The next change they need to implement is that the doctor needs to be independent - right now the doctor has one eye on the health of the player and the other eye on his employers that want said player back out there. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2019/aug/18/brutal-jofra-archer-cricket-a
Interesting tweet from Daniel Storey (a journalist who I respect and a big Forest fan...)
Daniel Storey @danielstorey85 · 4m Having sold their stadium last season to circumvent FFP issues, Derby County will sign Wayne Rooney as a player-coach so his significant salary can sit outside FFP calculations. I'm not mad, I'm impressed.
what a terrible morning. If Woakes is not injured then Root should be sacked for not bowling him in the session. Terrible bowling from Ali, terrible field placings all morning, no energy and even if we took the last 6 wickets for 0 and had to chase 142 to win I would not be confident. Aussies always do well at Lords... we could be 2 down and staring down the barrel very very quickly... and this after having them on the ropes at 122/8 on day one.
Yep. Sent off two week's earlier at Luton. We got caught on the M1 on the way so missed the first booking and the atmosphere there was really hostile. Miserable bloody place and always hated Luton after that. From the follwing season it was Neill and Dawes at FB
As someone noted PP started in the middle and Fergie moved him to RB - Of course Terry Fenwick went the other way - he played FB in the Cup-final team of 82 before moving central. That was a great back 5 - Hucker, Fenwick, Roeder, Hazell & Gillard (admittedly he was at the end of his career that year). At the time Fenwick was the first full back to score from open-play in a cup final. Can picture the long throw from Stainrod, the flick on from Bob Hazell and then Fenwick arriving at the back to head over Clemence. There were lots of players to like in that cup final team Of course the other memory I have of Fenwick is he being the defender that Maradona beat twice in the mazy run for the non-cheating goal of Mexico 86 QF
Root is unlikely to agree to bat at 3 which means we have a log jam of good players in the middle order but the top order is going to be dodgy and that does not bode well with Starc et al. I think they will give Roy a run out in the team at the top of the order even though he never opens for Surrey and I am sure they will try Archer also despite his complete lack of red-ball experience. Hopefully they won't all be mentally knackered from the WC but will be able to ride the crest of the wave instead...
In this case I think it is pretty legitimate to criticise Dhoni. He kept on waiting and waiting to explode and by the time came, one mistake (or one absolutely brilliant bit of fielding as it turned out) was enough to sink them. It felt like every over he was saying "Let's see off Boult/ Henry/ Lockie and then we will attack Neesham at the end" and it just left no wiggle room. Superb performance from Jadeja. Not sure what I prefer, getting humiliated by the Aussies tomorrow or getting to the final and not showing up (1986 Milk Cup Final style) against the Kiwis on Sunday....
This type of thing is getting even more tiresome than the four years of "maybe Adel is available"... NW gave us a season for the ages. He was more than likely sacked too early..... BUT.... his budget for the promotion season was higher than anything we could afford today, we would just be another "name check" appointment that would placate the fans but would utterly undermine the possibility of our DoF running the footballing side of the club for the sake of long term continuity. And don't forget.... he was the one that signed SWP, Joey Barton and Anton Ferdinand - which in my opinion was the ultimate sliding doors moment of the recent history of the club. We would have been better off going down with the honest championship winnning professionals that season whilst building something rather than planting the seeds for the Hughes' and Redknapps' of this world to totally destroy our club.
This is FIFA - if it is getting to the point that Israel might qualify, FIFA will just pay off some dodgy refs to make sure they don't. They wouldn't want their perfect cash-cow petroleum World Cup ruined.....
The 6-1 against Boro in 82-83 (I think) that someone mentioned above is a particular favourite of mine because the Youtube highlights show a great Roeder shuffle that was his calling card. Loved that team that got to the Cup Final in 82 and then romped to the 2nd division title the following season
I was pleased to see Spain knocked out because maybe someone will think before giving us "completed passes" stats. Spain passed to one another about 35 yards from the Russian goal about 1000 times yesterday - the stats will tell you that they had the most completed passes in the history of football and the highest pass completion rate too. The fact that not one of the passes actually got the ball any closer to the Russian net is besides the point....
Of all the replies above I think 2 in my lifetime have been era-changing: 1. Terry Venables (when he was manager) to Barcelona. That team that went to the Cup Final followed by storming the 2nd division followed by qualifying for Europe was a great team. Instead we got Mullery and the Partizan Belgrade debacle (listen to the way Peter Hucker talks about that night on one of the old podcast episodes). 2. Sir Les - one more year in the young Premier League and we would have been financially set for a generation but we couldn't hold on to Les, Wilkins was not good enough as manager and we ended up trying to survive with 2 young strikers. With Les next to him I am sure Gallen could have fulfilled real potential
As a Giants fan hate both of them but at some point you just have to recognize greatness and apart from Fergie (yes, hate Man U also) there is no coach in sport that comes close to Belicheck - has been doing it for a generation and his teams are always better prepared and better coached. Would love to see if either he or Brady could do it without the other but I guess we will never know....
the manager turnover is the biggest shame with all of this because before we went retro and appointed Ollie, the idea had been to build a playing style through the age levels and so the identity of the manager mattered less as the players bought would suit the style of play that we were going to play. We somewhat chucked that theory out the window when Ollie joined and I guess this summer is when the plan should really take shape...lots of players out of contract, finally have no massive earners on the books and maybe we will be able to build an identity...
Still not understanding how employment law in UK/ football works. His behaviour for the last few years would have been a sacking for cause in any job I know about with no severance due. Instead he has been able to drink his way through his contract with no consequences. It's no wonder that those of us that live in the real world feel more disconnected to the game today.
